SXSW Panel Discussion: Is There Life After Death? Featuring Jim Tucker, MD and Kim Penberthy, PhD.

Jim Tucker and Kim Penberthy of the UVA Division of Perceptual Studies (UVADOPS) were the presenters for this special panel discussion of “Is There Life After Death?”, at the SXSW conference, 2022.
Dr. Tucker is the Director of the UVA Division of Perceptual Studies, author of “Before: Children’s Memories of Previous Lives”, and leads the DOPS research efforts into children who remember previous lives. Dr. Penberthy is a faculty member of UVA DOPS, author of “Living Mindfully Across the Lifespan: An Intergenerational Guide”, and has a special interest in research related to altered states.
The Panel Discussion was facilitated by Deborah Blum of MIT. Deborah Blum is a Pulitzer-prizewinning American science journalist, columnist, and author of six books, including “The Poison Squad” and “The Poisoner’s Handbook”. She is a former president of the National Association of Science Writers, was a member of the governing board of the World Federation of Science Writers, and currently serves on the board of advisors of the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing. In 2015, Blum was selected as the fourth director of the Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT and is the founder of the award-winning science magazine, "Undark".
Panel Discussion Description: Is There Life After Death?
Our relationship with death and dying is evolving and along with it, our ever expanding exploration into the nature of human consciousness. The research being conducted at UVA DOPS addresses the question of whether or not some form of human consciousness can survive bodily death.
What is the nature of human consciousness? Is there life after death? These are the questions driving the research at the University of Virginia’s Division of Perceptual Studies, where researchers explore the nature of human consciousness during life and after death, testing the boundaries of prevailing scientific paradigms and shaping future scientific breakthroughs. The research conducted at UVA DOPS, expands traditional paradigms about the mind-brain relationship, and more broadly, the nature of consciousness and what it means to be human with important implications around how we deal with death anxiety, grief, mental health, and finding purpose.

I had this Uncle and I was his favorite nephew he used to have me over for Looney Toons, fishing trips, and other stuff. I had a dream when I was about 4 or 5 years old where I was on a boat on a fishing trip with my Uncle who at the time was administered to a hospital because he was dying of Kidney cancer which had spread to other areas, well anyway before he was hospitalized he wanted to have one last fishing trip with me but due to his illness and his advanced stage he never got to. In the dream he was talking to me and we were having a good time until he turned to me and said "I have to go now" and with a blink he wasn't there anymore and I was alone in the boat. I woke up crying and my Mom who had been woken up by it at the time asked me what's wrong to which I told her what happened and that he left me alone. Not even 10 seconds after I tell her this we got a call from the hospital telling us that he had passed away, out of everything I've experienced through life and all the skepticism I've ever had with any sort of religion that was the one thing that kept me spiritual.

Life after (your) death is impossible as there is no way for the soul to survive death. However, if the concept of an eternally inflating multiverse is correct, then sooner or later an exact remake of your soul will be created from scratch in some future universe with it's own separate big bang elsewhere in the eternally inflating multiverse. I dreamt a previous death on an ocean liner. It was vivid, observational, in the first person, with no fear. I was struck on the back of the head by falling timbers, with great force which killed me. After my death the dream turned to black and white and i was now in ghost form, walking down the port side of the ship, looking at the destroyed ship, burned out yet still floating. After I woke up from the dream, information flooded in, my name, Mary Higgins, a date and geographical location of the accident. I had Lithuania in my mind but was perplexed as this is a county, until I soon realized it must be Lusitania, which was torpedoed off the coast of England on its way back from America. I also knew there was connection to America in the dream. I thought I was going there to be engaged. Perphas that was something that happened earlier on in that life. I had this dream in 1997, so there wasn't a great deal on the internet then, but in recent years a passenger list has been made available online, and on it was a Mary Higginbottom. I found her picture online, she definitely bears a family resemble both to myself and my maternal grandmother. I did her family tree on ancestry and found she was born a few miles down the road from my mother's birthplace. I wanted to keep on doing her family tree to find links to my tree, but something told me to stop, and focus on this life and not look backwards. Im a believer in reincarnation now.

You CAN NOT die from your point of view because the universe is spatially infinite. Matter can only be arranged in a finite number of different ways and if the universe is indeed spatially infinite then everybody has an infinite number of exact incarnations of themselves living on exact copies of this Earth in other exact copies of our observable universe. P:articles can also be in many places at once. Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I believe that these memories of past lives are much more common than the mainstream believes but no one talks about them because they either don’t understand what is happening or their religious backgrounds make them believe it’s just a fantasy. I believe you and the fact that you were able to “solve” the case and matched your memory with an actual deceased person says a lot! I highly recommend you read Dr. Jim B Tucker’s books (literally any of them-they’re all excellent but the one “before” is both books in one volume!). They’re incredibly interesting, well-researched case studies and what ultimately made me a believer and started me on my journey to spiritual awakening.

Life after (your) death is impossible as there is no way for the soul to survive death. There is no life after death.
