Death is inevitable for all known living things. However on the question of what, if anything, comes after life, the most honest answer is that no one knows.
So far, there is no scientific evidence to prove or disprove what happens after we die. In this video, astronomer Michelle Thaller, neuroscientist and philosopher Sam Harris, science educator Bill Nye, and others consider what an afterlife would look like, what the biblical concepts of 'eternal life' and 'hell' really mean, why so many people around the world choose to believe that death is not the end, and whether or not that belief is ultimately detrimental or beneficial to one's life.
Life after death is also not relegated to discussions of religion. "Digital and genetic immortality are within reach," says theoretical physicist Michio Kaku. Kaku shares how, in the future, we may be able to physically talk to the dead thanks to hologram technology and the digitization of our online lives, memories, and connectome.

TRANSCRIPT:
MICHELLE THALLER: Einstein thought that the beginning of the universe, the Big Bang, created all of space and all of time at once in a big whole something. So every point in the past and every point in the future are just as real as the point of time you feel yourself in right now. Einstein believed that literally. One of his best friends died and he wrote a letter to this person's wife, talking about how his friend still exists. Time is a landscape and if you had the right perspective on the universe, you would see all of it laid out in front of you. All past, present, and future as a whole thing. And he said, "Your husband, my friend, is just over the next hill. He's still there. We can't see him where we are now, but we are on this landscape with him and he still exists just as much as he ever has." Einstein believed that you, right now, had been dead for trillions of years, that you haven't been born yet, that everything that's happened to you-if you could get the right perspective on the universe-you could see all at once.
SAM HARRIS: Death is in some ways unacceptable. I mean, it's just an astonishing fact of our being here that we die. But I think, worse than that, is that if we live long enough we lose everyone we love in this world. I mean, the people die and disappear and we're left with this dark mystery. There's just the sheer not knowing what happened to them. And into this void, religion comes rushing with a very consoling story, saying nothing happened to them; they're in a better place and you're going to meet up with them after you die. You're going to get everything you want after you die. Death is an illusion. There's no question that, if you could believe it, that would pay emotional dividends. I mean, there's no other story you can tell somebody who's just lost her daughter to cancer, say, to make her feel good. It is consoling to believe that the daughter was just taken up with Jesus and everyone's going to be reunited in a few short years. There's no replacement for that. There doesn't need to be a replacement for that. I think we have to be... We have to just witness the cost of that. I mean, there are many obvious costs of that way of thinking. One is we just don't teach people how to grieve. Religion is the kind of the antithesis of teaching your children how to grieve. You tell your child that your grandma's in heaven and there's nothing to be sad about. That's religion. It would be better to equip your child for the reality of this life, which is, death is a fact and we don't know what happens after death. And I'm not pretending to know that you get a dial tone after death. I don't know what happens after the physical brain dies. I don't know what the relationship between consciousness and the physical world is. I don't think anyone does know. Now, I think there are many reasons to be doubtful of naive conceptions about the soul and about this idea that you could just migrate to a better place after death. But I simply don't know about what... I don't know what I believe about death. And I don't think it's necessary to know in order to live as sanely and ethically and happily as possible.

No exactly what it does interpret. But once a brain is dead, there is no consciousness if only you travel in past and bring those memories in the timeline or into new body. That maybe call some afterlife.

Approximately 2 weeks before my dad died, I had a dream that me and my family were at a funeral home planning his funeral. My dream was so vivid I actually thought it was a memory, and not a dream. I woke up in tears, thinking that my dad had died only to realize that it was just a dream. I felt very disturbed, however. I couldn't get it out of my head. Two weeks later, I received a phone call from my brother telling my that dad had a massive heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. He was going there now to meet the ambulance. He asked that I would bring our mother there. I knew then that dad was actually dead. The next day, the entire family met at the funeral home to plan the funeral. I had never been to the funeral home before. When I walked in and we all sat down I realized it was exactly as my dream two weeks prior. I was completely freaked out. Everything was exactly as the dream including the colors of the walls, the furniture, the placement of the furniture, even where we sat. Since then, my life has changed. I could tell you more but it would be too long to describe. Regardless, I know without a doubt there's something more, I just don't know how it works. We somehow continue. What happens to us, where we go, who knows?

@@johnwiand1167 Something that may help you is thinking about how life started. When you think of it, how could everything just form by chance (as some scientists suggest)? Many things in nature point to a designer. Consider an example of a bird called the Gannet... this bird has the ability to dive from the sky at 118 mph and plunge into the sea (at an impact of more than 20 times the force of gravity) yet SURVIVE! How? Well first it draws a protective membrane over its eyes and inflates organs in its neck and chest that act as airbags to cushion the impact. As it penetrates the surface of the water its beak, head, and neck form a cone shape. That shape evenly distributes the force of impact on the gannet’s neck muscles. After all that, the gannet refocuses its eyes for underwater vision. What do you think? Did this bird's diving ability evolve? Or was it designed?

@@johnwiand1167 I was where you were a couple of years ago, I spent so much time thinking and scaring myself half to death over it without wanting to come close to acknowledging a higher power, god, or the acausal. The best thing I did was abandon the worry of feeling stupid and embarrassed or fear of ridicule. I think for many people have these fears, I get why when I listen people talk about religious peoples. Don't be afraid of being wrong, you don't lose much, only gain more and at least you put actual thought into it, unlike most people, anyone who could ever ridicule you for exploring this beyond science and the atheist dogma has never put much thought or experience into their own beliefs, which are based on faith just as much as a other religious beliefs. 1. Look into religion, spirituality, occultism, the acausal, anything beyond what most people accept as fact today. Like Carl Jung for example, astral projection or lucid dreaming. Btw many people get hung up on Abrahamic religions when this question comes up, just remember there are more ideas than Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. 2. Connect with nature, the natural world around you, and yourself. You'll also just feel better in general doing this. Reconnecting with nature is the closest you can really get to the world, it'll tell you so much more about this world than anything else. 3. Be honest, open yourself up to any possibility, introspect, look at your dreams. 4. Experience is the best way to learn, it trumps all. 5. You can learn from tons of stuff, games, books, movies of all types. The internet, others experiences, places of worship. Life is surreal. It's all too unbelievable to be nothing in the end, so don't worry : )

Idk if life exists after death or maybe they go to another universe or are born as a different person in this world but I believe the people you love will never leave you. I lost a friend two years back and still whenever I remember him, I can feel him. I can feel him in the corner of my room or looking at me when I'm crying and seeing his pictures. They say that people leave and memories fade. No, neither people leave nor do the memories fade. Not really. I enjoyed the first lady's Einstein's quote. That our perception of time is wrong. For example, a 10 year younger version of me is still existing and acting out what I did. And in the future I am existing at the same time. Ok, it will end from my POV one day.. But, as an Atheist, it was an interesting perspective to present (no pun intended).

2 quotes that help me conceptualize and grieve with death: "Life is merely a brief gap between 2 eternities of darkness" "Don't be sad about all the time you didn't get to spend with someone, be thankful for all of the time you did get to spend with them" Our human lives are too short to spend sad, and miserable. We must accept death as a natural process, and realize it is a beautiful thing. Death was never meant to be scary, it's a time that every human will experience. We all will have a day, where we take our final breathe, and end this beautiful journey with our loved ones. Each and every person reading this comment will one day experience true peace. A feeling that will last for eternity. Weather we have some sort of consciousness after death, or if there is truly an afterlife, be happy that you lived, you did it, you made it, and be happy when it's over. Don't be scared of death, be present and stay kind.

Thank you for that. I’ve been slowly coming to peace with my mortality. I believe all humans or anything living for that matter at their core have a biological fear of death. Every human who has ever lived has felt the chill of mortality. This is something we will never be able to escape from. As much as I’ve tried, I simply can’t comprehend death. It will be forever out of reach, and when it does happen, odds are I won’t know it. However, no amount of thinking will ever change the nature of reality. At the end of the day, thoughts are just thoughts. I am deeply interested in science, and I’ve come to realize that despite our probing, there will always be a layer we just can’t understand. The best thing for me is just to focus on living in the present moment, and accepting the finiteness of live. Most of my anxiety goes away this way. I feel at peace and see the eternal beauty in the now. That’s all I can do, and for me that’s enough.

True story. I am a retired ob gyn. 20 years ago I was practicing in a small town in nc. One night at 2 am I was managing a difficult labor and was trying to decide about doing a c section. The labor room had more than 5 family members who were anxious and angry and making threats so I went out to the nurses station to think. I was there alone when an elderly man with the kindest most intense eyes I have ever seen walked up, leaned on the counter and said "I just want you know everything is going to be OK". He said he was her grandfather. He told me about an nde he had when he was 25. He survived and his wife died when their car stalled on a train track. He described his nde as suddenly being in a vast field of flowers with colors too beautiful to descibe. He walked until he came to a stone wall. His wife was on the other side and told him he had to go back. He had already been pronounced dead and was laying on a gurney under a sheet when someone saw him move. We talked for at least 30 minutes. His granddaughter had a healthy baby 3 hours later and I never saw the man again. At her postpartum visit 6 weeks later I asked her to tell her grandfather that I appreciated his talking with me that night. She looked at me like I was insane and said he had died 5 years earlier. On November 7th of 2014, the mother of my son and my best friend was murdered by a deranged ex boyfriend who she had recently left. He shot and killed her and then immediately took his own life while my 5 year old son and his older sister and brother watched in horror as their mother bled to death. A month before this took place, I had met my soul mate, my lover, the mother of my now three beautiful teenage daughters, but most importantly, my best friend. She was diagnosed colon cancer in October of 2020 and on October 1st of 2021 shortly after completing Radiation and Chemotherapy treatments, she passed away during a surgery to basically hook her colon back up. I don't normally leave comments and it's difficult for me to speak of these never-ending nightmares that have destroyed so many lives and that have become my reality. My apologies for dumping this on everyone and I can assure everyone reading that it's not an attention seeking comment nor am I looking for sympathy and compassion from random strangers on a comment thread. I only wanted to state that no matter what happens in our lives and in this reality, I have to believe in an afterlife because other than now being a single father of four wonderful and truly amazing children, holding onto to the belief that one day in the future we will all meet again in an afterlife is the only thing that keeps me going. We have to keep the faith that we all meet again, one fine day. Time doesn't heal all wounds and I am sorry to disappoint those of you who believe that it does. Death becomes apart of you that you have to learn how to incorporate into daily life structure and routine or else the guilt and regret will eat you alive and take whatever is left of you. Two very small words, Regret and Guilt, but believe me when I say this and take it from someone who truly understands, they are by far, the two heaviest emotions that a person can feel and carry around with them each and every single day. It honestly takes everything inside of me just to make it through most days. -When the people we love are stolen from us, the way to have them live on is to never stop loving them. Buildings burn and people die but real love is forever. It's October 8th, 2022 - 1:38am and you all see what I am doing. Watching afterlife videos on KZbin. There has to be something after this life. This just can't be all that there is. Humans are very unique and we are the only species in the known universe that understands from an early age that we are going to die. That alone has to count for so much! But these are just humble opinions and thoughts of a lonely and cursed man. I wish I could be the one to confirm that there is indeed, more to life than what we can currently perceive and attest to and that we will get to see the ones we love and miss again in another life but unfortunately, all I can do I share my story and to let others out there who have lost family and friends that you're not alone and that you have to keep going. Humans are very resilient and we're certainty stronger than we give ourselves credit for. In the last seven years alone, me and my children lost everything! It scared me and kept me awake at night for what seems like countess nights worrying about how am I now going to raise four kids and provide for them and get them all the help that they needed. It was so overwhelming and nerve-wracking but as the days pass, I found that all you can really do is take each day as it comes and just make the most of it and the time that we have left with the people that we love and care for and to always try to be the best version of you that you can possibly be so that you have no regrets and you have the satisfaction of knowing that no matter what ends up happening when the time comes, we can all leave this place knowing that we gave it everything we had and that we never gave up....or in. My apologies again and for this message being all over the place at times...but that's just how bad and fast my mind now races and never really seems to stop. PTSD is pure Hell.

I believe there is a connection after death with all existence that is so incredibly peaceful that it feels like pure love. I love this kind of philosophical show, teaching us to see the bigger picture and re-evaluate what we exactly know in life rather than being imprisoned and blindly follow the teaching of majority for the next centuries to come. Now about death, do we really die? As a catholic it is the preaching that when a person dies, his soul will face judgement then he will move to afterlife but what if that’s not the case, what if we just simply cease to exist, our personality will be gone, our body will cease to function and that’s all. We are not even aware that we are dead because we have no more consciousness, our relatives will grieve because of the changes it will bring but they will coped withit and the cycle will continue.

It is a known fact in science that everything in the universe can never be destroyed nor can be created out of thin air. When a house is destroyed in a hurricane, the only thing destroyed is the definition of the house itself but the house is still there but instead it's in pieces. Everything applies to this. Everything is transformed, not created, not obliterated but transformed. Why, as a person, a consciousness, would we be the exception to that rule?

Also including deceased that were complete strangers (one example: the man in the hospital watching his granddaughter who had just had surgery and shared a hospital room with me. The nurse walked straight through him). There is definitely something after death. The deceased I have spoken to about an life after death all say basically same thing: If I was to tell you you'd want to join me there. Just wanted to share a quick story of a death experience I had as a child. When I was 6 years old, I had a vivid and realistic dream that my grandfather died. I was pretty close with him growing up even though he lived about 5 hours away. In the dream, we were at a water park at the top of the slide. He told me he had to leave. I was sad and told him I didn’t want him to leave. He then said goodbye and pushed me down the water slide. When I hit the water, I awoke from the dream. It was in the middle of the night and I was sad and crying. My father heard me and woke up and came to check on me. I was telling him I wanted to call “grandpa”, but he said it was too late in night and we could call him tomorrow. I then started asking my father questions about heaven, hell, and where people go when they die. Fast forward to later that day around noon, and my mother gets a call that “grandpa died”. Both of my parents were very surprised about the foretelling dream. I can’t explain it, maybe it was just a coincidence, but unlikely. I wonder if it was spiritual communication indicating there is life after death or that human brains send off remote communication signals in ways we do not yet understand. I would love to hear people’s thoughts on this or from those with similar experiences.

I had a similar dream about my mother. In my dream I heard her call out my name and she spoke to me. The next day I called her, and she was fine. A few years later, on the night when she did pass away, I got nothing. The way I see it is: people have dreams and people die - according to the laws of probability, sometime they coincide. For you, it was like drawing to an inside straight - unlikely, but it does happen.

In my dream he came to visit me, but never said a word, I kept asking questions and he would not answer, as in life. He had fixed his eyes on a door and kept looking at it. I woke up and went to computer to check on him for the first time. He had just died. How and why this happened, I do not know.

@J C Well said. Interesting to me is that I cannot tell the difference between real life and a dream. I assume most people I guess are the same way. Sometimes I dream and then after awake I think the dream really happened. On occasion, I can be having a pleasant dream and then wake-up. I can then purposefully go back to sleep and try to continue the same dream. Often I can do so. Sometimes I can dream and have a creative moment. I used to keep a pen and pad nearby so I could write down any epiphanies.

My mom's eyes looked like she was staring at a group of people in the distance... I knew both of them extremely well. The University of Virginia has an entire division dedicated to studying Near Death Experiences and Reincarnation. They have tens of thousands of records and they personally interview selected cases that seem to have no logical explanation. Their conclusion is that the soul survives death and it sometimes returns as a different person with memories of their past life / lives. I have been researching NDE's ever since I read Dr. Moody's book "Life After Life" recounting numerous NDE survivors' experiences after they were clinically dead that they could not possibly have otherwise known such as what the doctors and nurses were doing and using in the emergency room while the patient had no brain function. I'm 76 now and I've read and watched interviews of thousands of NDE experiences. I've only been researching reincarnation for 10 years. One of the most compelling examples was a woman who needed to have an aneurism removed that was in a critical part of the brain. The doctors had to lower her body temperature to the point where there was no brain function and then had to remove her blood. After the surgery, she was able to tell the doctors everything thing they did and said and the instruments they used all while her consciousness was floating near the ceiling watching everything. There are examples of reincarnation that cannot possibly be explained other than the previous life he/she recall actually happened based on verified historical records of their past lives. There is zero doubt in my mind that the soul continues after death and while I can't explain how or why reincarnation occurs, there is irrefutable evidence that it's real. Today, there are perhaps a thousand NDE interviews on KZbin and there a few powerful examples of reincarnation available to anyone willing to search for them. Those that claim that there is nothing after we die, have not done their research--its their emotional response without bothering to do the research. Another related interesting subject is Intelligent Design in the creation of life. Read Dr. Michael J. Behe's book "Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution". Fascinating read. There is a lot of information on KZbin about intelligent design that is also fascinating.

I hope there’s more options/customizability to the afterlife than that. Many would prefer ceasing to exist over ever returning here in any form. That's not true. We do know what happens to living things (people or animals) after they're dead. They decay and eventually get devoured by microbes, become part of the physical environment again, etc. The humblest thing to say about the afterlife is that there is no evidence to support it.

I have a medical condition where I pass out and my heart stops Neurocardiogenic Syncope. I don't always feel it coming. It is a pain to live with. When my heart stops, I lose consciousness. It usually only lasts a few seconds and up to 45 seconds. I don't think I've ever experienced brain death. That being said, when I have an episode and I've lost consciousness, I feel more like I've blacked out, nothing. It's like I'm frozen or suspended. When I come to, I'm usually cold and shaking, often sick to my stomach...sometimes I have lost control of my bowels and/or have thrown up. My whole body had tightened up.. It's like running a marathon with out training or warming up. Very painful. I'm exhausted afterwards. Sometimes for days.

And if you need more time then you rest a little more. I don't know if turning to religion in the long run is the way to go. I am an atheist and I won't go on a rant against organized religion but rather say I am a bit of an oddball in that I believe in existence of life after death. I was part of a paranormal research group for about 7 years. In 55 cases we collected quite a bit of evidence, mainly audio that we couldn't debunk and had to classify as proof that unseen entities communicated with us. As for religion, IMO it's a human created thing that doesn't contain any extra, magical components to make one's life better except for the fact that it's all personal perception. Too many religions become political and toxic and in many ways nothing more than a cult unfortunately. If you do decide to embrace religion I advise you to look into something very mainstream and low key. Please don't get involved in Scientology or radical, militant Evangelicalism.

In one of my dreams, a man approached me and asked me to follow him. One woman who was sitting at a table said that she would now meet new arrivals. They began to leave the building (it looked like a station building) and it dawned on me that they had all recently died. They looked very tired. The man who was all the time standing behind me said that I was only there to see how it all happens. Then this crowd goes to the bus and I go there too. And while we were driving, I saw as if my native places through the bus window, which I had never seen in physical life, but I was starting to remember. The atmosphere in that place was very mysterious, it was so great. I said to that man: - I like it here, it reminds me of my dreams, I feel good here - Dreams - are a reflection of the "afterlife" world - he answered - Where are we going? - Home. We drove a little more, I was so glad that I would soon see my spiritual home. However, I woke up. I don't know if it was just a dream or if this is how it really happens after death. The dream was very realistic.

The first time I had general anesthesia, the experience... was of having no experience. No sense of time passing, no sensation of being asleep or dreaming. I could've been out for a few seconds, or a few years, I would believe either one the evidence proved to tell me. If I had to describe it as anything, I would just say black, or nothing. Not even black except for the moments before unconsciousness and right before regaining consciousness when your eyes are physically closed. Anyway I had a very great sense overcome me that that's what death is. It's just being turned off, like a light. Socrates said to fear death, or assume it is some evil, is to think oneself wiser than you really are. Everything that ever lived has died. It can't be that bad. Life itself arose for whatever natural process that is, and death is an inevitable part of that, for some reason we don't understand. That is the crux of our deliberations. But it is a moot point.
@pxjxgx

I love this comment so much. I know exactly what you mean about general anesthesia. I had a hysterectomy 2 years ago. My first real surgery. I remember the feeling of just before and in between being under and waking up. It took me twice as long to fully wake up. During that time right at the beginning of coming out I remember this feeling of fading away. I was unconscious, I could hear but didn't understand the sounds. I could sense that my body was being moved but couldn't feel it. I realized this only once I had woken up. Had I never woken up the last part of me would have only known closing my eyes before surgery. It's just too much for us to fathom. Just like how we don't have to think about it for our lungs to take in air, we don't have to think about it to keep our hearts beating. Those organs are designed to work until they don't. Those organs can't imagine not doing their job, they just do it. Our brains are the same.... a brain can't fathom not doing its job. It's a survival tactic, I think.

I like to think on the "mind-body problem" in philosophy when I think of dying. It's fascinating how our consciousness can exist in a physical body, yet cannot be seen as a separate host. To think that our consciousness is its own matter provides some solitude when it comes to dying. Maybe, just maybe, our conscious energy is a special force that continues to exist in the universe despite losing its body.

There are two kinds of nouns, concrete and abstract. The existential status of their referents are very, very different. Physics asserts the constituents of concrete entities are eternal. There is no equivalent law that applies to abstract entities like processes. You know exactly, with no doubt whatsoever, that annihilation happens to a process when the processor disintegrates. e.g. The ketchup making process ceases in the moment the ketchup factory is blown to pieces. If being conscious is a process of the body, which is so likely as to be equivalent to a certainty, then I think we are forced to very happily conclude, we are *not* condemned to endure eternity.

Hi Ryan, rest assured our consciousness does not exist within a physical body at all.Only what God created is real, and nothing else really exists. This is more of a prophetic dream but I still feel fits the topic of this video. I “woke up” in my sisters Bedroom thinking I was actually awake and there was this man that was floating or hanging in the doorway. He didn’t move and appeared dead but I knew he was alive. He wore a brown fedora and trench coat. His body was green and rotted like he was decaying. His mouth hung open with glazed over eyes I could see every detail. Never felt such true fear in my entire 21 years of existing. Told myself if I closed my eyes he’d go away which I did then eventually woke up. Same day I got the news my grandma passed away from septic shock in the hospital. I sometimes wonder if it was death himself paying a visit to tell me because I’ve never had a dream like that before or ever again. Ok, I didn't watch the video but I had to look at the comments to see what everyone is thinking. I am an agnostic at best but I had a real life experience that raised the hair on the back of my neck one day and when things of this nature happen to a person it really makes you wonder what's at play in this universe. So my experience goes as follows. I moved out east to the Vermont / Upstate Ny area back in 84 from the wonderful state of Iowa. I came from a small rural town in Iowa and have lived in the same out east in upstate Ny while working in Vermont. My mother (whom I was very close to) passed away in 2010 and after flying back for the services I had the next day off to gather myself after the trip. I told my wife that morning that I felt I needed to plant something as a memorial as my mother was a garden freak. My wife said she knew just the nursery to go to in order to find what I was looking for. The trip to this nursery took us through the town of Mechanicville Ny. As we were driving through the town I noticed a parked car that was exactly the same model of car as my wife's car which we were riding in with the only difference being it was white and as we approached it I then noticed it had an Iowa plate. Now living in rural upstate Ny I can tell you I might see a car with an Iowa plate once every two years so naturally I got a little excited. As we pulled up closer I saw that it had one bumper sticker on it. It read simply " Your Mother Loves You". Whoa, even telling this story still makes my neck hair stand up. The last little oddity was that my mothers house that she had last lived in was on Mechanic street. Too many coincidences or what. Hope you all find whatever gives you peace. For me it's looking at a star filled sky on a clear night and hoping there might be something else.

The way I think about immortality is based on 2 assumptions: 1) existence is a matter of probability, and 2) one cannot experience non-existence. Whatever theory of the universe OR Multiverse theory might be true (MWI, CCC, …) there will be a point when the conditions are just right for you to be conscious. It took 13.8 billion years since the big bag for you to pop into existence, however, what one experiences on a personal level is continuous existence. One simply does not exist during the time between the Big Bang and one’s own birth. Likewise one does not exist after one’s own death and the time he/she pops into existence again. It’s simply a matter of probability.

If I knew for sure that afterlife exists, the sadness for thinking that maybe I will never see those whom I've lost again would be gone aswell as the fear of losing those who are close to me. That alone would improve my quality of life substantially. The only problem I have with being alive is that you either die young or you live enough to lose people, and that makes the life more sad the longer you're alive. Maybe that's the point though. After enough losses maybe you end up accepting your own end more easily.

After death, your soul leaves your physical body and stays at the place of death in invisible form. Then you get into another parallel world and wait for your turn to born again with new body, new mother and father. Birth to death, we live as per preordained story, collecting and reducing Karma including the Karma you inherited in your previous birth. Rarely, a person clears all the Karma and becomes a soul free of birth and death. May be Jesus is one example. There are known saints in India who just vanished in thin air.

If spirituality exists, then an afterlife does exist. However that is a concept completely outside of our understanding of the universe, and so it is attributed to optimism and faith (not that it isn’t false). While the polar opposite is grim and realistic, believing that there is no soul, but we are conscious simply because of complex organs and systems that process the world, without that we are unconscious, and unaware of anything. If this is what death is, nonexistence, unconsciousness, unawareness of anything forever, well it hurts to even think about that. Yet we do have examples of an unconscious and unaware state, such as the final stage of sleep when dreams finally leave and you can’t remember anything in between, almost like skipping forward in time, but for death there is no waking up. I think life is underwhelming. Life is a very complicated game, games are very simplified parodies of life, and our entire short existence is only this? Only living one lifetime as one person partaking in such mundane societal activities. I can’t help but want to hope for a continuation, a lot of people cannot. At least we find some solace in the unknown, it’s not determined that death is simply nonexistence.

My dad who helped others went the same way. why did they get nothing but suffering in the end when they did so much good? or people say "well there's nothing after so why care, you won't be around t care about it." that doesn't help me at all, I WANT to be around to care. i dont want to stop existing, and you think the best way to comfort me and help me come to terms with it is just say "yhea you wont exist, so fucking suck it up." i want to keep existing, i dont care about being alive, or being on earth, having my stuff, i just want to keep being me. I want to believe in religion and the possiblity of an after life, but i don't feel like i can do that without accepting that there's the chance that nothing exists afterwards, because I'll just feel like im lying to myself, But i can't bring myself to accept nothing ater death because i don't want to accept that I'll just lose the one thing that i own alone, myself.

Please people do not reject Jesus hell is forever and once you die that is it. You will wish and hope you were never born. Eternal everlasting punishment that Christ saved us from already. Believe in Him follow Him accept His blood RUN to Jesus and He will hold onto you and never let go. Confess Jesus as Lord and Savior and never turn your back on the One who promised to give us Everlasting life if we believe in Him. Please do not die and spend ETERNITY in everlasting LAKE of fire that Jesus saved us from don't reject the Cross or the blood shed that He spilt for us Jesus Rose and defeated sin and death for us Please do not die without Jesus there is absolutely NO Hope without Jesus Christ ❤️ I promise because God promised if you believe in Him you shall have everlasting Life. Now this makes sense, This is my explanation of how I interpret this concept so bear with me. since the Universe is expanding and it takes time for light to travel through the cosmos, an event in time is just a reflection of light, therefore when we die, our reflection [of light] is still traveling through space, so technically, we would still be there, it's just a matter of perspective.

We do know for sure that death is a change from one form to another. Water can become steam or ice. Tadpoles become frogs and caterpillars become butterflies. Our bodies change when we die and I think the emotions and love and music inside us travel on different wavelength

The biggest mistake with this kind of thinking is the presumption that an "I" exists. And the second biggest mistake is the assumption that "we" includes only humans.

I agree - I'm surprised Sam Harris didn't hit on this, given that he's spoken many times about the illusion of the self. He comes at it from the path of meditation though, so maybe he believes still in continuity of experience, which would merit the question of afterlife, rather than experience of continuity, which could do away with that question.

@@Anonymous9683 A lot of people say "We experience our consciousness." or something to that effect. What is "We"? Does "we" include other animals? Fish? Insects? Bacteria? Single cells? They's have to include single cells, otherwise they'd have to arbitrarily select somewhere between humans and cells.

One of the best examples I have seen of how to be was Fred Rogers of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. He taught children to accept others as they were and to love. He never pushed his beliefs on other people. He didn't live for the future except to make it better for everyone, and wasn't stuck in the past. Just love and help others. That's the only thing that makes this life meaningful. At least to me.

Bills perspective really shocked me. He asked "what would you do differently if you knew there was an afterlife, commit more crime?" How about realize sooner, that life is more of a learning experience and that maybe there is a bigger lesson and purpose than just living then death. You would allow yourself to not take things as serious, you would maybe appreciate nature more and find a deeper sense of the universe knowing it Is all connected, plus so so much more. You can do some of these things without believing that we are eternal beings, but knowing we are, shines a light on so many more areas that may have not been visible before. I was an atheist and over time my horizon expanded as my understanding of things did, which transformed into spirituality. I can only hope the horizon expands more and more for everyone.

There’s a good possibility that after death, we just go back to being what we were before we were born. Basically a state of nothingness. I’d much rather that be the case as opposed to having to live forever. Life is hard and it’s brutal. Just the thought of outliving my dogs is downright depressing.

The job of every prophet in the Bible has and is to explain how Mankind has come to form part of the Divine Deity of God As created by God - to his Holy Image, we are are important to Him; hence He sent his one ☝️ and only Son (see John 3:16) so we had a fresh start lol. I know this by having a relationship with my Dad (creator) not by cheap mankind’s religions and rituals. Pls don’t let man deceive you on who Our Father really is. All you need is an empty room (hahah) and a heart full of wonder looking for Him to find the one and only truth - Just say Jesus I give you my life. This is how you live forever by his side. X 🚨🌊🎄

Even if there's nothing after death we'll certainly stop grieving for our loved ones when we're dead as well and there won't be survivors' guilt when we're no longer surviving so that at least will be two issues out of the way. There's a saying "be glad the way things are". It may turn out to be a pandora's box if there was real repeatable physical evidence. Perhaps it's better confined to inner feelings after all.

Suppose you’re on an airplane that’s doomed. What do you say in those final 90 seconds? I’ve always been searching for the answer that’s not God, but I would find myself in the moment saying “Thank You God for this wonderful life, take care of my loved ones, and please accept my soul” Knowing yourself truly, and appreciating the situation. You can probably find your answer for life thinking about this awful scenario.
