Whoa! 2:10 mark, way to seize the opportunity! That’s going to be such an impressive nebari! Hope it gives you a couple feeders in that bald patch at the very least. I think they call that technique “pinching buds/bud-pinching”. Sure do appreciate you, brother, and all you share with us.

This tree is HARD CORE! I'm just waiting for the trunk on mine to thicken enough for the chop... maybe 2 years away now...
@BackGardenBonsai2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Dave, yeah they are tough. i reckon yous will be a decent size in 2 years, thats like 5 years for other trees since they grow so fast.

Looking good so far, my thinking with these sycamore trees is to grow an interesting silhouette as the leaves are huge.
@BackGardenBonsai2 жыл бұрын
cheers. yeah that is probably the best way, although the leaves are a lot smaller than ones growing in the ground, but still massive for the bonsai world!
@BillyBobJoeSnr2 жыл бұрын
@@BackGardenBonsai maybe it's one of those trees that need multiple defoliation to get small leaves, but might only be once every other year.

Check if the side with no branches is the same with no roots. I have a similar tree with the same problem
@BackGardenBonsai2 жыл бұрын
i would believe that is probably right!

I wonder if that massive trunk with roots would have budded back for a dope mame 🤔😄😜...love this sycamore. Cheers broski 😎🍺🍺

I was thinking the same thing, a very short broom style.

Very cool start to 2022 sycamore progression. Looking forward to truck flare from those massive basal roots. I'm still struggling in this department, so enjoying every moment of learning.

cheers, just give it time, your roots will get there :)

Looking good mate, what fertilizer you use?
@BackGardenBonsai2 жыл бұрын
Cheers! just general miracle grow or what ever its called. all purpose?... general?. something like that.

Ahhh man, I'm jealous, I think your "wound" looks great, my sycamore (inspired by you might I add), has a big "outie Nubbin" type thing going on. Do you think I could sand it down or cut it off?
@BackGardenBonsai2 жыл бұрын
cheers. you would probably be better off looking into carving it into a innie, rather than a outie. lol. but you can just leave it for now. there is no rush to deal with things like this. it might even rot away on its own

@@BackGardenBonsai I shall leave it be for another year then, thanks for getting back to me :-)

what substrate did you use?

molar clay, perlite and compost, about equal parts, probably more molar clay

Is there a way to reduce the leaf size?
@BackGardenBonsai2 жыл бұрын
just keep working the tree as a bonsai. as you can see mine has reduced. ...but i do think it will reach a genetic limit. i think they can only get to a certain size, but its still a lot smaller than the full grown trees

Why would you bonsai a sycamore?
@BackGardenBonsai2 жыл бұрын
why not? i know they are far from ideal, but they are free and you can hack away at them and have fun while the more suitable trees take their time to develop
