SABATON - Christmas Truce (Official Video) REACTION What up Sycho Nation and welcome back to the Asylum. Today we are taking another look at Sabaton an awesome band that sings about history and war.
Todays song is Sabaton Christmas Truce and this song is about the truce for one day during Christmas where all the guns stopped and all the bombs went silent. To celebrate a time of peace. Where the enemies met ate together and talked and generally got to be human again.
To me this is one of the most important times during any war that has ever happened as it showed these soldiers were not just death machines but living breathing humans that did not want to fight and would of rather made peace. Truly a remarkable time in history and Sabaton does it justice. Sabaton always, always, always gives a breath of fresh air and humanity to those that were fighting in war, in battles throughout 99% of their songs. Their take on each and every fight from a neutral perspective (no pun intended since Sweden was neutral in both WWI and WWII) as to right or wrong, good or bad allows for a element of compassion and humanity to shine. No Bullets Fly, Soldier of Heaven, Night Witches, The Last Battle, and their recent cover of Motorhead's 1916 perfectly embodies the fact that everyone involved is human. It also highlights that in war, everyone loses in some way, shape, or form. Moving to the history element, most soldiers that participated in the Christmas Truce were pulled off the line, reassigned, and replaced by superiors within a month. In some areas the truce lasted a few hours, in others, a couple days, and I think there were a couple of areas where the truce lasted until just after the new year. The Russians attempted a similar truce around Easter on the Eastern front. However, when they came out of their trench on Orthodox Easter, they were captured by the Germans and Austro-Hungarian's, who had viewed Easter having been 1-2 weeks earlier. Yep, a huge amount of production on this one. It WAS movie production, made by people that usually make movies. When the world shut down, movie making also stopped, so they had time for this. The piano intro is Carol of the Bells played backwards. Joakim (lead singer) has said this song is actually a waltz. From the 2022 10th album, The War to End all Wars, this record , and the previous one, were all about WW I stories. This was the unofficial Truce of December 1914. When the war resumed, some refused to fight their new friends, some intentionally fired high. Units had to be rotated to different parts of the line, many were punished. The officers and higher ups were pissed that it happened, and made sure it never did again. Considering that some of the frontlines /trenches ran literally through villages (that were destroyed by the fighting) I don't think it's that far fetched to have a piano in a trench, as long as it's not a flooded one. And this was still quite early in the war. Joakim (the singer/ keyboard player) said in an interview once that he had seen account(s) about a piano, but I don't think he got to go into any details of when & where or in whose trench, because the interviewer moved onto the next question... The christmas song you recognise is "Carol of the Bells". Joakim does something similar to it, it's close enough that people get what he's going for (the rhythm is the key), but he's actually adjusted it quite a bit to fit this song.

its crazy they kept even one piano much less more throughout other trenches but so cool they did. I can just imagine some guy really good at piano playing haunting songs to screw with the enemy lol
