Interesting factoid: Joakim never intended to be a singer and has no vocal training. When Sabaton was formed he was the keyboardist. He was also the only band member who had written some songs, and the rest of the band asked him to sing them so they could get an idea of the melodies. Since they had no lead vocalist at that time, they asked him to fill in until they could find one. As Joakim tells it, "They never did. Lazy bastards."

Greetings from the Czech republic with some interesting facts. Joakim is half Czech, this song was actually filmed in the Czech republic with Czech film crew that has never shot a music video, they specialized in film making. They actually built whole scene and even dug up the trenches on the field. It's just one of the best songs they have (my opinion). And at last, a piece of the blown piano was signed by the band and given away on 9.12.2021. Sabaton is just the best!

In the British Army their was units called PALS BATTALIONS which were Regiment's of civilian men who were friends, Neighbour's, family members and workmates from factories, with ages from 15 years old. This is a story of a True Event that happened from Christmas eve 1914 to Boxing day ( 26th December). It was British and German soldiers who met in no man's land on Christmas day 1914 to celebrate Christmas, with a game of Football, drinking, exchanging gifts and even one man who was a Barber in civilian life set up a Barber shop in no man's land to cut hair or shave British and German soldiers who needed his services. 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🤝🤝🤝🤝🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪🎅🎅🎅🎅🎄🎄🎄🎄💙💛🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁 The video was made by people that usually make movies. When the world shut down , no movies were getting made either, so they had time for this. The piano melody is a variation of "Carol of the Bells". Joakim has said the song is actually a waltz. WW I did have a lot of young men and boys fighting. And yes, a lot were just "cannon fodder". Check out the music video for Sabaton's cover of Motorhead's "1916". Those topics are evident in that song.

I think the best thing about this video is how Sabaton doesn't pull any punches with it. Note the symbolism of the exploding piano. Sure, there's a moment of humanity which is beautiful, but then they go right back to killing. Because that's what happened. There was no happy ending. There was a happy middle but no happy ending. Also, I suspect that Joakim took extra lessons for this one. His vocals are even more expressive than usual.

Enjoyed your reaction to this amazing work of art. Hopefully you want back and listened to the beautiful choral vocals of Floor Jansen all the way to the end. That aria with the strings and her voice take the emotional impact of the song to a whole other level. Floor is married to Sabaton's drummer, Hannes van Dahl, the blond gentleman who is the first to step into no man's land. Plus seeing how many people were involved in creating this masterpiece shows how much Sabaton commits to telling their stories. The band has said they spent years developing the song and the music video because it was so important to do justice to the song. All of Sabaton's music is about actual military events. They don't glorify war but instead celebrate the average soldier or sailor. If you want to delve into the history behind their songs Sabaton has a YT channel called Sabaton History where the historians they work with explain the story behind the songs. Love how you picked up on them using the melody from Carol of the Bells but played in reverse to invoke that Christmassy feel while still being dark. As a veteran myself, I really connect with this song emotionally because Sabaton has perfectly captured the brotherhood of arms that all military people share, even with our enemies at times. If my eyes aren't leaking by the end when Floor's soaring vocals come in then I definitely lose it. I saw them in concert last year and they are phenomenal live. When they played this song and they got to the part where the music drops away and there is just the chorus of "Today we're all brothers, Tonight we're all friends." the whole audience was singing at the top of their lungs and it was very beautiful.

BTW: That was Floor singing during the end credits that you cut short. She's married to Hannes van Dahl, Sabaton's drummer. She's called the Valkyrie Goddess by her fans so her appearance on the battlefield here seems fitting. In old mythology, the Valkyries guided the souls of the fallen to Valhalla. Like you said "people used as cannon fodder". By whom, is the question that might merit another song: "War is a racket", right? In this case the war could've been over way sooner but it was prolonged by "rich ppl" that we shall not mention. They managed to drag the US into the war, resulting in unprecedented suffering and mass deaths. They got a "promise" in return, seemingly small change: the Balfour Declaration. These ppl also sponsored the "Russian" (not..) revolution, and prepped an Austrian puppet to play the opposition part and ultimately ensure the total destruction of Germany. Treaty of Versailles assemblies also featured these financial powers, putting a stranglehold on the German economy. The stage thus set for WW-II and in its aftermath the foundation of a state we shall not mention. The forces behind these industrialized wars were/are not just rich people of course. They control the monetary system itself. WW-I & II were about the destruction of European nations. Meanwhile, these monetary overlords also fostered the grand project of first the "League of Nations" which morphed into the "United Nations". Out with the old order based on different European nations/cultures, and in with the New. The horrifying wars they orchestrated prepared the hearts & minds for this new idea of a "Global Village" under the banner of "never again". Official history is peppered with these slogans to ensure ppl never learn about what really went on behind the scenes. Today's events are no different in that respect. Merry Christmas & Cheers from Amsterdam! 🤘

Please check your facts, there is so much wrong in what you said. On both sides nobody was willing to give up, in germany they fought till they could not support the army anymore. The point with the stranglehold on the german economy can not really stand up a closer examination, and mass unemployment was not the reason why the germans voted Hitler into office. Unemployment was on decline even before he was elected. And from what I have learned in the past 8 or 9 years I can say that it takes just one country that does not want to play by the rules the others play by and you have a war going on.

The people who made the music video Christmas truth are normally busy filming in Hollywood. If I remember correctly from Sabaton's History about Chrismas True, it has been agreed never to fight on Christmas Eve, but on that day weapons are down. You are right that there were many young boys but in the 1st world war, when men were sent out to recruit men to become soldiers and Sabaton did the song Great War, which the recruiters said when they were out to attract men to enlist. The song Sabaton covered in 1916, I sing I was 16 years old when I enlisted.

There's nothing you can't do with metal, all it takes is a talented individual and an idea and you can create incredible, moving, pieces of music. Cannon fodder? Kind of . They were given worse- charging machine gun nests that would mow them down. Back then, the intense matehmatics involved in a cannon bombardment was not done automatically by a computer. A lot of the shells failed to make their mark and their usual target was either other artillery pieces or enemy machine gun nests to make for a safer charge for the offensive since those targets were relatively static and yet soldiers could duck, etc. A good movie demonstrating this is Sergeant York. They also suffered from diseases like a deadly influenza outbreak and trench foot due to being close in trenches, often suffering from unsanitary conditions. But yeah, the deadliest weapons were gas and machine gun.

My grandfather was born in 1912. I remember asking him at one point if he remembered anything from the First World War. He did and he said that once the war ended everyone breathed a sigh of relief that it was finally over. That they were the lucky ones that the war never came to Sweden. The one thing i remember most was that he took my hand while a tear rolled down and he said: "I hope that you never have to feel that a war is on your doorstep and everything that comes with it." Now, 12 years after his death, a new world war seams to come closer and closer.

If you want an awesome live song with Sabaton you should react to en livstid I krig (a lifetime of war) live Scandinavium Gothenburg. The album Carolus rex they had released during that time is about a part of Swedish history called the era of great power (stormaktstiden in Swedish) from when Sweden was a much bigger nation with ambitions of expanding. The album was released with both an Swedish and English version, the difference being that the Swedish one tells the story from our/a Swedish soldiers view while the English is more from an outsiders view. It is the Swedish version they played at that show so be sure the subtitles are on, I was at that show and all I can say is that you will not regret it.

This was the single greatest show of Humanity. The Christmas Truce. Men put their guns down, got out of their trenches and celebrated Christmas together. Probably the last time in human history we'll see something like this, cause I heard a quote once. "Human nature doesn't get better. It only get worse"

A reminder that most of these men on both sides were told the war would be over by Christmas. it would continue on until 1918 ending the month before Christmas 1918. Millions dead, wounded, and displaced. there are parts of France that are still off limits to the public today because of the risk of unexploded munitions from WW1 and WW2. you can still make out the trenches over 100yrs later. in Reality the officers on both sides put a stop to this as they feared it would break the mens fighting spirit.

Another video you should watch, if you haven't already, is "No Bullets Fly". It is, like this, a true story of something that happened during WW2. Also if you get the right video, you see the two pilots that the song was written about meeting in real life. Also like it has been mentioned already, the blonde guy at the very beginning is one of the luckiest men on the planet. That is Hannes Van Dahl, his wife is Floor Jansen.

9:45 - there were quite a lot of young men that lied about their age and enlisted in the beginning of World War 1. I think the reason is very clear why. No one truly knew what kind of a truly barbaric hell a modern day large scale war would become because of all the new weapons and technology that had been invented by that point. None from the lowest private to the greatest general. WW1 is special in that it had many of the modern day infantry weapons available today giving each individual soldier a much greater capability than before, but, at least initially, really none of the technology to break a stalemate. No aircraft truly capable of striking ground targetsand no tanks. At the same time, however, you had barbed wire and crew-served belt-fed machine guns. This is a big part of the story told in Sabaton's cover of Motorhead's 1916 that they released fairly recently. Highly recommend it by the way 🙂 It's a rather interesting to see art depictions of war prior to "The Great War" and after. The sentiments it tends to portray are quite different. From brave men standing shoulder to shoulder facing the enemy in colorful uniforms to a dark muddy hell scape of trenches, gasmasks, machine guns, barbed wire and senseless slaughter. Great reaction as always Ray - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Sweden 🎅🏻🎄🎇🎆 🙂
