@therenewedpoet42926 жыл бұрын
He is quite capable on record. Syd did want to fall out of Fame in 68 and then basically wanted his solo career. 69-70 he records, as well as the Peel Sessions and releases the two albums. Then he does his libe Stars in 1972. His last recording is 1974. His legacy is he lived until 60 and most likely with some sort of alienating personality, which can be defined medically. His father was a respected pathologist, and died in 1961. If my dad died when I was 14, 15, I wouldn't have made music. I would have collapsed right then.
@SeaCryptWeave3 жыл бұрын
i dont think he wanted a solo career as much as he wanted to express himself even after get ejected. he retired from music and became known as a painter. the lime light of the band is why he left to begin w. he never agreed to he the best selling band. he had a few architecture student buds and they made music. for awhile. til they decided to be cop outs to fame. imo

Actually it isn't. "Its nice jangly. Can you keep it there?"
@adriantaylor64908 жыл бұрын
Many of his recordings where done by simply setting up a Mic in front of his electric fender telecaster and recording it close up without an amp or being plugged in. That's how he gets that "Jangly" sound and why it doesn't sound quite like either an acoustic guitar or electric/amped sound. He would do the strumming and vocals together and the others instruments would be added later. Once the other instruments are added using the technique you get that sound that is like no other. :)
@TheHumphreyClinker8 жыл бұрын
It sounds like an electric guitar played through an amp but with the mic close to the guitar, or perhaps one mic for the amp and one close to the body of the guitar. It could also be an electric guitar plugged directly into the mixer. Not many amps sound that clean.

Hello Sir To You, the crystal clear sound of this recording is simply the guitar direct in the console, we call this the DI (direct injection) sound. There is also a bit of the strummed strings going thru the voice mic. That all makes this very unusual sound that all guitarist hates, because they feel naked without an amp...

It's great to hear music like this, especially from someone who is legendary - even to the point of being more myth than man. Syd Barrett was someone very beautiful and precious, and I am grateful that he was here. He was a tragic figure, at least in my eyes. Syd had potential and what he gave all of us was great music and poetry. THAT, to me was Syd's real legacy - his music and his words! It's playful and innocent and raw - even both his guitar accompaniments and with Pink Floyd reflect that.

I think he had an uncommon, original armonic sensibility
@cynthiamarston22087 жыл бұрын
Carlo Marchiori yes....he also was born with synesthesia which would necessarily cause some other unique stuff. If he had stayed away from acid and mandrake all would have evolved better. I’m a firm believer it was actually acid that did him in the most because around same era Peter Green and his roadie got acid at a German commune type rich people’s place and when they got picked up by a road manager to go back to where the band was staying they both were acting similar to each other...especially spaced out. They both ended up have some very long term difficulties ( years) which resulted in electric convulsive therapy and other efforts. I don’t know about roadie for sure...I forget but Peter finally achieved enough results to get back in music. The lack of truly progressive actions left Syd to muck through it. I can only say poor Syd. Because at the same time he was “out of it” after his change he was rejected rather unceremoniously from the band he had created and went in to a bad depression. Over all considering these things and a few other things he did ok. There is about 6 years of undocumented time while still in London most the time just doing who knows what before he went full time back to the Cambridge family thing. He didn’t go down easily but he did go down and alone basically. I admire him. There but for the grace of god go I. He never got the chance to develop his art stuff....it does take time for that. He got waylaid by music. He got waylaid by drugs. What art he left was about the same as what art he was applauded for while in school. He admitted the school was very demanding of him and he didn’t think he was up for it really ( late teens spoiled do whatever you want sexy male on the hormones taking charge) he was up to it but maybe at a later date....but then the whole drug and music deal. It’s pretty simple really. Took me a while investigating a lot of resources. He did not get worse in his visual arts. He did slowly loose what he had learned about music. In any case. He did better than a lot of people. Died with over 1 1/2 million pounds....not dollars for his budding musical abilities. And has left a legacy even though much of it is gossip..... enough of it is truth. He deserves the spot in limelight. Hopefully it serves to help another who might make different choices about “scenes”....drug or whatever.

But actually, for that song, I think Soft Machine tried to play along to this recording of Syd Barrett playing on his own. It matches when you compare the two. The labelling of Syd as acid loon gone flake begins in earnest with the naming of the first solo album. According to the replacement guitarist the title is meant to connote all things original, jolly and kind, amounting to a justification as unconvincing as the decision by Madcap’s producers - bassist and guitarist in cahoots - to dial up the fried vérité for aesthetic reasons. A more plausible gloss is that the inclusion of mis-steps and mis-takes exposing Syd in the most egregious manner possible are a means to absolve the producers from accusations of lo-fi unprofessionalism. The outcome is not lost on the artist who in his final interview proper in 1971 describes Madcap’s production as "dusty… unnecessarily so."
