To be honest here, whether you love or hate it, know that this was a late 80s into early 90s game. And most who had a TG be it 16 or CD, you were BLESSED for getting Ys or Valis and whatever else that was considered a gem. Most of the games I remember, I rented them over the weekend and if I liked them, I got them. I can say this was my first brush with Valis cause the ones I remember ever playing were this and Super Valis and my younger self is smiling seeing this being played.

The final icing on the localization shit cake consists of lifting the cover art for a business board game, Nariagari Trendy (also by Laser Soft), for the US cover, which included characters from other Laser Soft games (Valis included), and no resemblance to this game.

I can’t comment on the game because I’ve never played it, but this is quite the collector’s item. Never seen it in person.

It's below average to downright awful. Boring, terrible controls, simple.... I owned the japanese version long ago and the disspointment was huge.

This game has a LOT going against it, including the mistranslation of SD into Syd, and everyone calling her Syd the entire game, when the poor girl's name is Yuuko.

I’m not sure if it was a mistranslation as it was intentional since no one in the west would know what SD meant

I have no idea why they still call it Syd on the switch version. It gets confusing as valis collection 2 has valis 4 that isn't the super valis 4 from snes, which will be on the valis collection 3 lol I'm one and done. Let alone some of these aren't that good anyway.

The shape of Valis reminds me of that Bobbleheads movie. That's not a good thing.

Luckily, there is people still caring about this port and they plan to improve the whole game. Like why they didn't translate the game as it supposed to be? Reminds me of the early days people used to call Marth "Mars" from fire emblem. Yuuko isn't so hard to pronounce.

It's because they mistook "SD" as the main "focus" of the game, when it really meant "Super Deformed" a.k.a. chibi. Thus, the main protagonist's name was SD? Well how do you translate that into English?

Man, that is some FUNKY scrolling and jumping going on there. I can't stand games where when you jump there's no weight to it and you can't see what's coming because you have to be closer to the side of the screen to advance it, meaning you often take cheap hits from enemies you couldn't react to as they come on screen. I seem to remember there was a cheat code for this game that gives you an invincibility bikini and interestingly enough, the book lists her name as "Yuko". The code was Up, Down, Left, Right, A, B, Up, Down on the title screen.

This is a reimagining of a PC88 game from 1989, and they were trying to stay relatively faithful to the original. That's why this game can feel a bit odd at times. For example: The original game had tile based movement (8x8 pixels), which is why the jumping has no weight, here!

I still don't get why Telenet and Renovation didn't port the REAL Valis II to the Genesis/Mega Drive instead of this, especially since the Genesis got the first and third games.

I also never understood this! When I was a kid I wanted to play Valis II for Mega Drive and my brother showed me Valis SD lol...

The abrupt stage transitions, the game suffering from sprite flicker even in cases like 8:25 where there is only two sprites on screen with barely any movement (poor programming) and the other problems combined with these, just shows how the game was released unpolished and unfinished.

I like the chibi art style, but this looks pretty bad. Also, is that an ice cream cone turning into her sword? (0:44) 🍦》🗡? And *_here's_* something hilarious. THEY FORGOT TO TRANSLATE THE CREDITS!! (27:01) It's like they were so embarrassed by this game, they didn't want anyone who could read Hiragana or Katakana to find out who everyone's names were.

I absolutely HATED this as a kid, I thought it was weird compared to the other Valis games on the Genesis/Mega Drive. I was never a huge fan of chibi but that wasn't the only issue for me. The gameplay and overall graphics weren't satisfactory IMO. Haven't played this in ages, so maybe I'll give it another chance soon.

The screen scrolling is horrendous. It looks like you have no time to react to oncoming enemies because you're on the far sides of the screen. It's kinda like Konami Wai Wai World.

This is kind of basically what out-of-touch Western boomers _think_ anime looks like as represented in spoofs we would see in older TV shows. The game has such a cheap feel to it. If I wanted to play an action platformer with a bikini clad heroine, I'd play SNK's Athena.
