I went to an event with Rebecca Thorne for the second in the series, Pirate's Life for Tea, and she said that she thinks Can't Spell Treason isn't that great. She wasn't expecting it to spread like it did. She expected to get maybe a couple hundred dollars off of it. She said she worked a lot harder on the next few books and that the world building and characterization is something she feels a lot more proud of!

I dnfed The Familiar at 120 pages and I was soooo mad at how awful and boring it was 😭I think it was my least favorite of the year actually, I had such high expectations but I literally didn’t like ANYTHING about it omg

finlay donovan series is my ultimate comfort read - i love how outrageous and disbelieving it is, and tbh i really like how everything despite the chaos still manages to come together at the end, and as an audiobook it's really fun, too! i understand for a lot of people, its the suspension of disbelief they have issues with, but the premise itself should really be the cue for people to manage their expectations in the first place... with all due respect.

Never lie by Frieda McFadden - it was a book club pick and I had to rate it 1 star. The characters were so infuriating and the twists at the end were just for shock factor. Would definitely recommend for a “Worst book of 2024 video” 😂

I feel the same! It was so so so very boring and so much potential was wasted. The premise was so cool but honestly I wished it was just written in the time of the “flashbacks” and we could have seen more of the business when it was running.

I soft DNFed The Familiar at about 50 pages. I really like Leigh Bardugo so I am not ready to give it up yet, but I was having such a hard time connecting to the story. I’m really hoping I can love it as much as Jan, but feeling worried. My biggest disappointment, which is also my least favorite of the year was A Tempest of Tea. A heist, vampires, Peaky Blinders vibes - it was set as the perfect book for me. Honestly, it’s was just boring. I ended up giving it 2 stars.

My husband and I loved the Faithful and the Fallen series as well and he read the Of Blood and Bone and had similar thoughts to yours. He said it was ok, but it should have been set further in the future or something because it just wasn't nearly as good as the Faithful and the Fallen series. I read a Time of Dread and thought it was ok, but had a really hard time getting into the second one and had to put it down for a bit. I'll still finish it at some point, because it's John Gwynne, but I will say the Bloodsworn books (Shadow/Hunger of the Gods) are right on the same level as the Faithful and the Fallen if not exceeding it!!

☕️ 🐸 love your honesty. I was a little lost with the familiar as well. Another book by Jeneva Rose, home is where the bodies are.. I think at this point I'm just DNFing this author. My least favourite book of the year was The Midnight Library by Matt Heig. As subtle as a brick to the face with writing as dry as sandpaper. I wish I had DNFed it.

Least favorite and DNF at 50% (which is 300 pages!) was All the Colors of the Dark. It was SO hyped! I’m definitely in the minority on this one. It wasn’t slow, it was slooooowwww. The characters were so unlikable and cringy. The writing style was odd. Just did NOT get it lol.

My worst books of the year were 1. Little Women..I know, but it wasn't for me. It put me in the worst book slump. 2. Forget me not by Julie Soto. So many people loved it, the characters infuriated me.

My worst book is tied between Interesting Facts About Space by Emily R. Austin and A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross, both of which I question if I was reading the same thing as everyone else, lol. I saw so many people raving about the plots and the characters and the writing but...where was it??

Worst book of the year was Ghost Eaters by Clay McLeod Chapman. On paper it had so many things I love, but in practice it was just painful and cringy. A close second is An Academy for Liars by Alexis Henderson. I thought it was honestly just a mess.

Literally same for the Age of Magical Overthinking. Love Montell's books and podcast, but this just really felt like she used whatever was cut from Cultish and spun it into a new book and shoe-horned them into these theories. I really struggled to see how some examples demonstrated the theory she was trying to explain.
