I ride a motorbike 90% of the time and I often call people out for using their phones while driving. It's a danger to themselves and others. As a motorcyclist I have to be on the watch for many different things and one thing I should not have to worry about is other people being distracted by their phones.

I remember my brother was taking me to skating practice and he started talking to his girlfriend on the phone by bluetooth and after he was done I tried to explain to him not to do that and I told him a story about a child’s incident. A women was talking on her phone and when she looked up it was too late. She hit the child and died two days later. And my brother was like “ It was probably because she was holding it. Bluetooth makes it safer.” And I was thinking to myself NO IT DOESN’T! My whole family are distracted drivers. Thank god I don’t drive, but still it terrifies me. I end up being everybody’s eyes while they’re doing other things. And if I keep telling them they’ll just get mad at me. What should I do?

I went to school with Sydnee and knew her pretty well! I can’t believe I stumbled upon this video. It brings me back to when my entire high school was mourning. I had known Sydnee since 5th grade, and she was a wonderful, bubbly person with a great personality. She never had anything negative to say, she was very kindhearted and always put others first. I used to sit with her on the school bus in elementary school, and we would flirt all the time 😔. I was at a party that weekend when everyone found out she had passed away. Everyone was in shock to say the least. It was surreal knowing someone I had known since my childhood was no longer with us. Her dad came and talked to my high school, and it was so sad to hear what he and his family went through. Vicky also talked at the seminar and said Sydnee was wearing her seatbelt earlier that day, but apparently just didn’t put it on the next time they got in the car. I had math class with Joe the year after it happened, and you could tell it really bothered him. He always looked sad and would barely talk, he also slept most of the time. Vicky is doing fine now for anyone curious. She had limited mobility for about a year afterwards where she couldn’t bend over or lift anything heavy. As far as I know, she has made a full recovery and has full use of her body. I never knew her very well, but she usually looked depressed after the accident. She’s incredibly lucky she’s not paralyzed after breaking her back and neck. NEVER text and drive guys, and ALWAYS wear your seatbelt. Things can go wrong fast while driving, and lives get ruined in an instant. My class had to watch Sydnee’s family and friends go through hell, and there was nothing we could do other than be supportive. RIP Sydnee, your friends from GLHS will always keep you in our thoughts!

I watched a 23 year old girl roll her car 6 times after swerving of the road on I-45 just south of Corsicana,Tx. because of texting and driving. She was ejected from the car through the sun roof and wound up under the car. I helped first responders lift the car to get her from underneath. Then I watched her as she took her last breath.

Any one leaving a rude ass comment about having no sympathy for her death because she wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was texting and driving, I hope to God this never hits close to home for you. I was close with sydnee at one point and she had the biggest heart and personality. She always wanted to help bring others up and was a big supporter of spread the word to end the word. She was an amazing one of a kid soul that I still miss dearly. Yes this was a preventable death but doesn't make her memory any less beautiful and we all make mistakes. But before you judge a story thing about her life her family and friends left behind. And the poor girl payed for it with her life, the highest price anyone can pay. I simply wish she were still alive, whole, and in all of the lives of those who loved her. Too often, teens make choices that cost them their lives. I made mistakes, but I was just lucky. I was a teen in the 1980's and would thrillingly not wear my seatbelt when with friends ( no cell phones then). However, something like this could have happened to me simply for not wearing my seatbelt. I even knew better, but there was that thrill of defying my parents and their rules.

In cases like these, spiritually speaking there is a HUGE difference being just a sinner and being a redeemed and forgiven sinner through Jesus. Being born again and having a strong faith in Jesus can make a BIG difference. Now because of this there are no such things as making wrong decisions and making mistakes in God's point of view because through His Son those decisions and mistakes are already forgiven and fully pardoned. For God knows beforehand that we as His forgiven and redeemed children through His Son know how to sin in this life, but on that same token He fully forgives and forgets those sins.

That was the one thing that saved my brother’s life in a car accident was his seatbelt. One of the first things my parents told me was that if he wasn’t wearing it, he would’ve been killed. This was back before cell phones, but he was speeding and his truck flipped. He literally walked away. He took the blunt of the trauma to his face and has the scars to remind us. I’ll never forget seeing him when he came home from the hospital. But he’s why the first thing I do is put on my seatbelt the second I get into the car.

I worked for a major fast food chain for years and witnessed teens on their phones texting knowing they were just in traffic texting and going back back out from the drive thru into traffic, and without seat belts well! I wish kids would have to see videos like this before receiving a license, I believe it would save a life!

It's not just teen-agers. At least a couple times a week I see people swerving off the road, cutting people off or running red lights while they're on their phones and it's almost always people over the age of 35-45...even people in their 60's on occasion. I have a 20 year old son that's been driving 4 years and a 16 year old daughter that's about to get her intermediate license. I've taught them over and over their whole lives to wear their seatbelts and leave the phone alone when they're driving. But they'll be the ones out there making those choices without me around one day. My heart aches for her family and friends.

I hope that this video gets to as many people as possible! This was so well made. I am glad that the families of the girls who lost their lives spoke out. That had to be very difficult. My Dad lost his life in a car wreck. It’s not an accident when someone makes a choice to speed, text, talk on the phone or have to many people in the vehicle which could cause a lot of distractions. My Dad was killed because a man decided to speed on very wet roads. He ended up hydroplaning and swerving all over the road. Long story short, everyone else walked away. My Dads injuries were caused because he made a last second decision to jack knife his semi so that the Chevy truck behind him would hit him in the safest way that you can. Everyone walked away from this 4 vehicle wreck. My family is forever changed because one person decided to speed on very wet roads. Please be safe everyone. Put the phones away. Put them in your console or glove box. There is absolutely nothing worth you u getting injured or injuring someone else! Trust me, you don’t want to live with that.

I also see mostly young females texting and driving. One teen girl in San Antonio killed herself while texting on the very FIRST drive after her parents gave her a new car. Ran off the road and hit a tree and killed herself while driving to her friends house.

I don't have to know others personally to know myself that I care far too much for them and their families to even comprehend texting or doing anything that could impair or distract my driving that would devastate their lives.

Just because we work in healthcare doesn’t mean we are robots, you never get used to seeing people die, especially a young person dying from a preventable accident. I lost count how many times both myself and my coworkers have gone home in tears, because it breaks everything in you to see my life taken away for no good reason whatsoever. For me the hardest part is dealing with the family, watching them fall apart, often in your arms, and there’s nothing you can do to console them. Half the time I end up crying right along with them (I don’t care what my professors told me, emotional transference is absolutely inevitable, unless you’re made of stone, it’s going to hit you, it’s gonna hit you really hard, yet the universities teach us it’s not supposed to affect us at all, pardon my language, but bullshit, it destroys you inside). I can’t help it, no amount of training on earth can stop your emotions from getting the better of you in a case like this. But I go to work every day, because for the one person that we can’t save, there’s another 90% that we can save, although most times, their lives are never the same again, often ending up in wheelchairs, permanently disabled. I’ve seen the effects of texting and driving thousands of times, as well as impaired driving and distracted driving, if you can’t focus on the road, then don’t get behind the wheel, because you have no idea how much pain you’ll be inflicting on dozens, if not hundreds of people. I don’t usually get all preachy, but in this case I will, because I’m the one that has to deal with the aftermath when they come in through the doors of my trauma unit in the ER. The last time was about two weeks ago, a 17-year-old girl who was texting and driving, lost control of her car while driving on the highway at over 100 km an hour, and smashed into the back of an oil tanker truck, parked at the side of the road because he had a flat tire. She was almost unidentifiable, her entire body burnt beyond recognition. If it wasn’t for the highway cameras that actually caught her on video texting behind the wheel, just before she hit the oil tanker truck, we probably never would’ve known what caused her to drift. Have you ever seen a human body melted, but still alive and screaming in agony? Trust me, you don’t ever want to see something like that in your life, ever! It was a miracle she was still alive, but the damage was far too extensive. Her burns alone (that coveted 90% of her body) would have killed her, but she had massive internal injuries as well, that we could do nothing about. All we could do was give her enough pain medication to stop her from screaming, and make her last moments on this earth comfortable, so her family could say goodbye. I’ll never forget that night, her parents walked in and couldn’t even recognize their own daughter because she was burnt beyond recognition. But I had to tell them it was their daughter, and I had to tell them what happened and how it happened, even though they’re strangers, it feels like your own family when you have to be with people The second they find out that their child is dead. It is an inconsolable cry from both parents, that I never want to hear again, but unfortunately, I know I will. I had to take a couple of days off after that night, just to compose myself, because even though I went to college for countless years, that taught me how to deal with situations like this, eventually you cannot help but be emotionally affected. For gods sake, don’t ever get behind the wheel unless you’re going to keep your eyes on the road and you have no chemicals in your system, because I’m tired, and I’m broken, from telling mothers and fathers that their children are dead from texting and driving, or drinking and driving. If only you could be there in the room with me when I have to tell the family members the tragic news, you’d never get behind the wheel again.😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰😰

The simplest way to prevent texting accidents is to turn on the 'aeroplane mode' of your mobile phone. That way, no calls, texts, emails, or social media can distract you whilst you're driving. Remember to always WEAR YOUR SEATBELT CORRECTLY. The shoulder portion OVER your shoulder with the lap strap low and tight across your hips; Vicki was very lucky that her insurance company paid her medical bills because she wasn't wearing her restraint correctly. Many insurance providers would've been well within their rights to refuse a claim if they believe the claimant was negligent in some way. A typical example would be a fall from a balcony whilst drunk, the provider would understabaly say "Why should we pay if you were drunk,?". It's the same principle when you don't wear your seatbelt correctly, below the belt is restrained however, above that isn't.

In Georgia since 2010, texting while driving has been illegal. On July 1, 2018, a new law went into effect known as the hands-free law. The law states that you cannot hold a cell phone up to your ear with 1 hand on the wheel or support the phone by any part of your body. You can't read, write, or send text messages. The only way you can send a text message is if you use your voice.

There will never be a text message that is more important than your life. Being young, you think you're invincible. You think "that'll never happen to me" & "I only glance at my phone for 3 seconds, there's no way I'll wreck and die because of it". Unfortunately it only takes those few seconds and then the pain, like this family has, will be in their hearts forever. I'm glad to see so many of these videos on KZbin. You think this is bad. I read an article from San Antonio where a girl of 17 y/o was given a car from her parents as a gift. On the very first drive to her friends house she was texting and ran off the road, flipped the car and killed herself. Last week I was also texting and driving and not wearing my seatbelt. Thankfully I have a car that has a sensor when their is danger and it started beeping. I was going so fast though that I still couldn't stop fast enough to prevent a crash and a pretty big bump on my head from hitting the steering wheel. Lesson was definitely learned. I will never text and drive again and I will always wear my seatbelt.

This is so sad. In Tenn we have THP tractor Trailers. They ride the roads, passenger officers calls in the info and the cars move in. But, this touched me too. Because my very first grandchild was born in Ohio in 2013 and my son and daughter n law named her Sydnee Gabriella. We now realize, that she will probably be our only grandchild. So, this texting stuff just scares us to death. Our Sydnee was named for her dads favorite hockey player Sidney Crosby!, I hope this family is healing. I can’t even imagine.

here’s an idea: if you are driving with friends make sure they are responsible in the car as well. as a passenger you too can be watching the road/your surroundings as well. many times i have been sitting in the passenger seat and have stopped many friends from plowing into the back of cars or turning too late etc and stopped accidents just by watching myself. also, if you’re in the car w friends have them hold your phone and control your music/answer to messages for you if you so desperately need to respond to someone. be safe and responsible everyone. What makes me angry and sad is that these kind of tragedies are TOTALLY PREVENTABLE!!!! How many times does one have to be shown/told the devastating effects from distracted driving and not wearing seatbelts?? It's so simple to buckle up. I wish all car manufacturers would install a safety device that would not allow the car to operate without the seatbelts being worn. I just bought a 2020 Corolla with all the updated smart car features but I'd love to see a smart car device that would help REALLY SAVE LIVES like what I suggested. As far as stopping ppl from texting and driving, that's a battle that won't be won any time soon. I personally have seen too many of these tragic videos to EVER text and drive. proud2BaNurse: First of all, thank you for what you do. I know for a fact that you are grossly underpaid. (I have friends who are nurses.) Secondly, you are correct - kids will text and drive unless parents catch them at an early age and teach them as early as age 5-11 against texting & driving, drunken driving etc. But once kids get past a certain age, most of them fall victim to pier pressure. Not too late, but a lot tougher to get through to them.

I was in an accident 2 months ago where a driver rolled through a stop sign & hit me which caused my my car to spin around around. The driver was texting. I could have been seriously hurt or worse. Still I can understand the tragedy in this. Please don't text and drive guys, it's not worth it and this is a reminder.

Sadly this world continues to be an issue with distracted driving in 2024, my friend lost her son a couple of months ago, and that accident was preventable. More and more people are on their phones now and aren’t paying attention to their driving!

Texting and driving was only a partial cause of her death. If she'd have been wearing a seat belt, regardless of whether or not she'd been texting, there's a good chance she would have survived. Probably would have been worse for wear, considering the actual way they crashed, but the seat belt would have saved her life.

I have trouble understanding why she wasn’t wearing her seatbelt! Since my daughter was born in 1977, I know we’ve worn them before that and she has never gone anywhere without hers. I don’t think her teen sons would consider it.

Saw a woman texting and driving on my to work today. She entered my lane multiple times. I was able to safely pass, she was looking at her phone instead of the road. I honked and made the hand motion to put her phone down. This was a grown woman.

He might be a great driver. The texting or drunk driver that drives isn't, and might very well hitting your friend's car. Bad idea not wearing a seat belt in a situation like that. Always assume that other motorists can be drug users, drunk, texting etc. Paranoia is good in some situations.
