I lived in Australia and now I live in Canada for almost 4 years now. And I decided to move back to Australia this summer. I can’t stand this weather anymore and I found myself a lot happier when I was in Australia as I need beach and lots of sunshine in my life.

I would also add that Australian employers are very reluctant to hire people who don't have permanent residency. I think that's also why you found it harder to get your first job in Sydney back then. That's because permanent residency is hard to obtain in Austrlaia and working visas are typically temporary and employers don't like the uncertainties involved with hiring someone who might not be able to stay longer term.

Forgot to mention CPP is not really a tax - it’s basically your retirement saving which you can get back when you are no longer working. The system is Australia is different where employers pay the whole amount (currently 10.5% of your salary and going up to 12% by 2025) into your own managed fund on top of your agreed salaries, which is a defined contribution system which doesn’t guarantee your future income. This is called superannuation which is supplementary to the government funded Pension income

There are two XPT trains from Sydney to Melbourne daily. Same for trains to Brisbane. There is also trains to Perth (Indian Pacific). Also opal card means trips like Sydney to Newcastle are capped $8 RETURN (weekends) or only $6.51 for off peak single fare one way. Cheap for the 160 km trip

Toronto is okay for a visit, but I just don't see the point. It's expensive for what it is and as you mentioned, their wages don't match expenses. Sydney is expensive, but at least you get proper weather, beaches, parks, paid better and have a better quality of life overall. I finally got to visit my best friend who moved to Sydney 4 years ago and was blown away. The only thing that's scary is the housing crisis (which is going on everywhere).

Both cities are very car dependent, Toronto is slightly worse perhaps but the freeway networks are bigger and FREE. Public transport in Toronto is actually catching up fairly quickly and there are currently massive investment in Toronto's metro system and so are in Sydney. Canada is a bit behind when it comes to banking, particular in adopting new technologies but again it's catching up with the rest of the world. European cars in Canada are generally cheaper than in Australia, except Vancouver where you have to pay additional luxury car tax (similar to Australia). Move to Vancouver and it's kind of like Sydney being super outdoor and the weather there is much nicer than in Toronto

i would say sydney is worse for car dependency. toronto's sprawl is broken up by a lot of mixed use and dense zones and the suburbs are usually walkable with stores nearby and good bus connections. sydney is much more sprawling with all of its density consolidated to downtown.

My only issue with not picking Australia over Canada, is distance from the rest of the world. Australia is one of the most isolated countries on the planet. I do not like isolation I prefer being a 9-10 hour flight from Europe, rather than 20 hours. The same goes for if I want to visit South America, Central America it's not long to travel. With Australia, I find its an 8 hour flight just to get to Vietnam.

There is a song called "En el mar la vida es más sabrosa" which means "In the sea, life is tastier." Canada lacks that. No matter which major Australian cities you compare with Canadian ones, there are other factors I can add… but The simple fact that Australia has nice weather and beaches makes a significant difference in quality of life. Many Canadians can attest to their desire to visit warm destinations like the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Mexico, and others at least once a year.

Hi Akanksha, great video and thanks for sharing. Both are great cities and I have been fortunate to have lived in both for years and happy to share some of my observations. My experience is it's generally harder to find a job in Toronto compared to Sydney mainly because the Australian economy has consistently outperformed the Canadian economy over the last two decades and unemployment rate in Australia is generally lower than in Canada as a result. What you have experienced in Toronto lately is primarily Covid driven - there's severe labor shortage across many countries due to Covid restrictions over people movement and it's the same in Sydney with employers struggling to find new staff and wages are going through the roof! Summer in Sydney is generally quite nice - you do get on average maybe two weeks of 30+ days in particular when there's a heat wave but it's not unbearable as you don't get the humidity as you do in Toronto during summer. Time will tell you that summer in Toronto is hotter mainly due to higher humidity coming from the lake. Night life in Sydney is actually pretty good but you will have to go to the city - yes most retail stores except super markets do close early but major super markets, restaurants, bars, clubs etc remain open until late/midnight. Of course if you live and work in suburbs like Macquarie Park things can be very different. Toronto offer definitely more choices for arts and indoor activities and cost of living is generally lower in Toronto in particular housing and the freeways are truly FREE. Tolls in Sydney are insane!!!

Great to see another video from you Akanksha. I saw your video shot near Macquarie University where you were discussing your dilemma and the need to leave. It stayed in my mind for months as it was quite impactful and disheartening as I am a massive believer (because I have seen first hand the benefits), of providing residential visas rapidly to people like you who have the skills and ability to contribute to Australia in extremely positive ways. I am currently living in Japan (although also in Sydney), and see the result of doing exactly the opposite. Japan completely rejects the idea of skilled migration and it pays for it with a 30 year continued depressed economic situation where salaries have barely risen and it's really a place in limbo. I also have thought about your video for a while mainly because shortly after you left, two large cyberattacks were experienced and the government immediately put a massive priority on residential visas for anyone with qualifications related to cyber security,. I've seen also how quick the Australian government can approve visas when they prioritise something, with visas for Ukrainian relatives being approved within minutes of applying, at a time when they turned that tap on.

Very interesting topic. I am citizen of both. Left Toronto over 30 years ago and later lived in Hong Kong and Sydney now. One thing bout the data of population and area, I think it is fair to compare Metropolitan or Greater Toronto to Sydney. Your Population figure cover a much larger Metro Toronto but Area figure just the City alone according to Wiki so the difference is dramatic. Things back then were quite different. In the early 80s there was no Sunday shopping in Toronto. No late Thursday night shopping like Sydney. All shops and banks close early. Have to take 4 lines of public transports to University. And snow shuffling is pain. Things start to change around 1986 due to rise of immigration I guess. Shopping mall start opening till late everyday. Shops got fined if open on Sunday but some still do because they can make more to cover it. Only shops in Chinatown were allowed to open so it was considered unfair by many. I believe it has something to do with the power of church that they don't want to see people stop going. But time has moved on and restriction probably dropped after. As Canada is linked to USA I found it great for driving around even to New York once or took a 4 days greyhound trip to Vancouver. Not doing much in Australia myself. Still considered it a big isolated island separated from the rest of the world. So many things I want to buy have to import myself. No dealer support means choices are limited. Now I am retired and may pay Toronto a visit sometime later for a catch up. I am sure it will blow my mind.

My friends living in Canada also update me about these things, which makes me feel more disappointed. Six months without going out or enjoying outdoor activities is too much for me. I love Toronto more, more and bigger events and festivals, more world class concerts and music scene, more sports teams and games, more diverse and more and better food. TO may have winter but i love 4 seasons opposed to sunny all year long and i also am not much of a beach bum as I love cities over nature and find nature good to visit every once in a while over spending every second of my life in it. And honestly Toronto winters are not as bad as the rest of Canada, and Australia summers in general i think are more painful than TO winters

Minimum wages in USA is less than 10.00, if Canada has much higher minimum wages then most manufacturing companies will shift to USA,. Also Canadian banking and credit rating system is similar to USA, On another note, Starbucks Coffee which is found on every urban block or any USA or Canadian city did not survive in Australia, maybe they preferer a different taste.

I have not lived in Sydney, so cannot speak to it. Have been living in Vancouver for the past 5.5 years and have loved it so far. Yes, winters are gloomy and the city is quite expensive. But if you are comparing the outdoors of Sydney, Vancouver is the one to compare to. Lot of parks, beaches, trails and mountains in and around the city. It is a gem right from Spring to Fall, with winters being gloomy and snowfall on a few days of the year. I have found the transit to be very reliable. I have visited TO and the GTA, but did not like the car-centric and highway-centric model. On the other hand, I believe the transit and personal vehicles blend well in Vancouver. Would love to live in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane one day.

The biggest problem with the Canadian healthcare system is it's an underfunded system with supply not keeping up with demand but it's "free". Australia also has a universal healthcare system called Medicare which is government funded or "free" but the system is generally more efficient as it's supplemented by a private healthcare system which is funded by both the government and middle to high income earners (about 50% of the population has private health cover) through private health insurance premiums. The private health insurance premiums are a lot lower than those in the US because it's heavily subsidized by the government. As a result, waiting list at public hospitals in Australia is not as bad as in Canada. The biggest problem with the Australian healthcare system though is patients out of pocket expenses, which is currently capped by the Medicare Safety Net scheme within an annual limit (lower for low income earners and higher for others). The government is currently conducting a review of the Medicare which is seeking to improve efficiency and deal with the out of pocket expense issues. Hope that helps

Couldn’t have explained it any better than this 😊 Just to add one more thing, Medicare is only available for Permanent Residents and citizens. Temporary residents must have a health insurance and the monthly premiums can range from $60 to $200 depending on the cover you choose. These health insurances normally cover everything for the residents and there are very nominal out of pocket expenses (if any).

I think you were very unfair to Toronto, moved there, and seemed surprised that it has cold winters. You have lived in Toronto for only a few months, mainly in the winter. Toronto really comes alive in the summertime, and gets a deep green, lusher than Sydney. You went on and on about all the natural wonders of Sydney (with good reason) but fail to mention that Toronto sits on a giant lake, that is heavily utilized in the summertime, especially with the Toronto islands. There are also many beautiful lakes to the north of Toronto, within a very short drive. I would rather swim in a freshwater lake, than the salty ocean. One of the world's great natural wonders Niagara Falls is a short drive from Toronto. Also, Toronto is a much better theatre, museum, arts, nightlife, and shopping city than Sydney. Toronto gets all the big music acts, where Sydney gets some of them.

In Nutshell=Canada is as expensive as Australia with 40% lesser income. For example, security guard in Australia makes 5,000-6000$ a month for working 50 hours. In Canada security guard makes 3500$ for working 50 hours.

Banking. Good point. Generally speaking cheques in Australia were phased out in the 90's and today we would only ever use bank cheques (cheques created by the bank itself), for the transfer of very large amounts when transferring by BPay or BSB becomes unwieldy or annoying. That said paying large amounts is not impossible by those methods. I asked a US employee of my company (who lived in Sydney for several years), what the number one reverse culture shock was upon returning to the US. He said it was banking and that he needed to revert again to paying rent by cheque. With that said, I've spent a lot of time in the bay area where tech should be on top of tech solutions. But the reason banking is so straightforward in Australia is because the government policies encourage consistency and allow for the quick adopt of technologies across the board, whereas in the US for example the onus is on single banks to create these with a lot of resistance from the intra banking system. This is also why something as simple as contactless payments had higher and faster adoption rates in Australia than almost anywhere else in the world (Korea was similarly as rapid, but trailed Australia by 5 years). Banks were quick to all implement it. And similar to the UK, things like chips were quick to be adopted and signatures were all but phased out for security reasons. This also means that in Australia, there isn't a need to carry a wallet at all. And I would only every visit an ATM if I needed to pay someone like a tradie in cash (rare). The US (and possibly Canada), have just been allowed to drag their feet. Some things i see in internet banking just appearing now, have been around in Australian netbanks for even up to a decade (big kudos to Commbank in particular to how ahead of the curve they are). A perfect example of Australia rejecting overseas tech is seen in HSBC. The Hong Kong based bank released their worldwide app to all regions, but Australia rejected it so badly they needed to completely ditch it and have a local team re-write a local internet banking phone app by scratch. Here in Japan it feels like its back to slow. The banking system isn't the problem though, it's slow and quirky software development and more importantly, interest rates are slow low than the banks appear to claw bank money by other means. This means ironically that it's quicker, easier and cheaper to use our Australian cards in Japan to pay for things and withdraw cash from ATM's (something as I mentioned, I don't do in Australia). Using our Japanese bank is slower, more expensive and just what we would say in Japanese as Mendokusai (めんどくさい) - too burdensome or troublesome.

Its not only weather. Major things goes in favor of Australia are pay rate for unskilled labor jobs way better, labor rights in Australia much better, double pay rate for working weekends, cheaper car insurance, cheaper home insurance, affordability much easier to buy home in Australia, groceries almost same. For shitty wages Canada is too overpriced and overrated place. Melbourne's public transport is way better. U can survive without car.

Both of us are Technical business analysts age 28-29 (which is in the skilled occupational list) and I have about 6 years of experience. I’m getting paid about AUD 60k as of now which makes the decision hard. Caz we are pretty comfortable here but love to settle down in Australia. Scared whether going for studies is the right choice.

@@devyud5719 there are a lot of reasons why I choose to stay outside of India. One of them is work-life balance. I can pursue my other hobbies and travel without thinking that my work will be affected. The lifestyle and independence I have here cannot be achieved back in India and with lifestyle I don’t mean monetary benefits, I mean the way I live (no questions asked or being judged for choices). Being a student and pursuing PR is definitely a hard road to take but if you are open to experience and learning new facets of life, you will love it. Also my partner is from Karachi so we have to stay overseas and not in our own countries if we want to stay together. That is one of the biggest factors.

Not sure about NZ but Australian coffee redefines the whole notion of good coffee - very different from the drip coffee you find at Starbucks and Timmies. You will have to head to the best of the best cafes in downtown Toronto to find something similar and there are very few of them

Sydney for one main reason the climate, Sydney is almost subtropical. Toronto has cold winters Sydney hardly has a winter at all. The one point that makes Toronto very good is cannabis is legal.

I'm not too sure about the cannabis thing. Drug abuse is a much bigger issue in Canada than in Australia, not to mention the widespread homelessness problems in major Canadian cities which is uncommon in Australia

Interesting video. Sydney and Melbourne are two great cities. About TTC it is a dilapidated system. In Sydney much upgrades were done before the Sydney Olympics for Olympics. Before that it was not that great. Basically most of the people in Canada as well as Toronto does not depend on TTC or public transport. Waiting for public transport in winter. Ha Ha. Not my cup of tea. Canada like USA is automobile country. Building automobiles is an integral part of Ontario economy. The difference between TO and Sydney is that if you draw a 200 KM radius from your apartment there are millions of people living in that space including Americans. In Sydney it is one side is ocean and the other side is called "outback" and two sides are with limited population (yes I have travelled these areas). In summer take a car and travel out of TO to places like 1000 islands, Muskoka and Kawartha's. You will be surprise to see the pristine fresh water lakes and the green pine forests. By the way pine does not shed leaves in winter. I am planning to go my little hideout in "Lake of Bays" this Saturday for an ice fishing trip. Usually banks here need to see you before opening an account (fraud prevention). Last year I have used cheques only twice. 99% is online transactions. Car is a depreciable asset whether you pay cash or on lease. If you lease you change a model very often and has a use of a newer car. Using a 10 year old car? Not my dream. Cars are lot cheaper here than in Australia.

Cars at the lower end are similarly priced between CA/AU but the luxury end of the market is definitely cheaper in Canada due to higher taxes imposed on more expensive cars in Australia

I'm pretty sure Torontonians rely on the TTC as much as Melbourne and Sydney rely on their transit systems. Toronto has a subway system, 24 hour streetcars, buses and a suburban train network called "GO". When you say "waiting for public transport in winter", I'm guessing you must live in a distant suburb. I'd guess most people in Toronto suburbs have cars, just as I'm sure people in suburbs of Sydney and Melbourne do. I live downtown (which for those who have never been, the Toronto downtown is very large and densely populated) and have a plethora of choices; I only have to wait 10 minutes. I do not own a car, but ride my bike year round, or walk as downtown Toronto is a very walkable city. As for people talking about writing cheques, who writes cheques in 2023? I don't even have a cheque-book and haven't for some time now. Work uses direct deposit and people transfer money electronically in Toronto the same as they do in Australia; rent is paid online as a chequing-account debit. There are so many cost of living studies on the internet, and Sydney is firmly considered to be in the top ten most expensive cities in the world so it's not only cars that cost more than Canada.

@@bobbbxxx Once upon a time I was thinking to immigrate to Australia. Even I took a membership with CPA Australia. I just resigned from the membership on this Dec 31st. I studied Australia in comparison to US and Canada and decided to drop Australia entirely. That does not mean Australia is a bad country. Upward mobility is better in North America. If I lived in TO downtown I would have embraced TTC. I don't like to take my car to downtown. Parking is difficult and extremely congested. Also who want to pollute downtown unnecessarily.
