Sydney Railways-Last Days of the Red Sets-Run-Pasts-Part 1, the Underground. These scenes were filmed in December 1991 and January 1992, just before the Red Sets ceased regular operations. In this part, filming was done at Sydney underground stations and the approach to the underground.

Like the classic Tait's in Melbourne the rattlers were the real Sydney, the whine of the traction motors, the bang from electrical flash overs, real suburban trains. Didn't go for the Beclawat windows though. The drivers used to stand most of the time rather than sit on that rigid backed stool. Back in those days people were more hardy and didn't whinge and moan that the set wasn't air conditioned like they do today. At 7.50 it looked like Clive Livingstone wandering along the platform, he retired as SM at Town Hall. Great video, much appreciated.

The. tangarra train coming into Museum station at 5:54 is such a contrast, and would have looked very futuristic in its day ( compared to the Red sets) , when it came out in 1988 or 1989.

Sydney Trains should bring them back. Way better than the Tangara, Millennial and Waratah trains. People enjoyed the Red Rattler yesterday for the Harbour Bridge's 90th Birthday. Yes, the good old days. I was about to start high school when these trains left service. Why not, the old silver ones are still running, and so is the XPT for the record.

@@tassiebaz There was one really tragic event, around Feb 1975… between Waitara and Hornsby. Before ‘reliable’ auto doors were commonplace. My girlfriend’s 12 year old brother was standing in the centre of the double door area, holding the poles, and the carriage lurched…. you can guess the rest. I read somewhere that not all the red set power cars could be used with the Tulloch DD trailers, just wondering what is the story there?
@tassiebaz
@tassiebaz 2 жыл бұрын
Hi dean r, Thanks for your question. I don't have the technical knowledge to answer, but I know someone who does. His response is: "The first ?40 Tulloch trailers were put in what were then the single deck S sets (later called W sets). These trains used 120 volts for their low voltage, older trains 32 volts and also in S sets they had power operated doors. So they could not be randomly exchanged between older and newer single deck sets. I think some Turlocks were also modified to be used in trains with the DD power cars, so changed from 32v to 120v for that use, and power doors fitted." Hope this helps. Cheers, tassiebaz.

From my understanding, the middle car facing the wrong way indicated an 'indivisible' 8 car train, meaning it couldn't be split into 2 x 4 car trains. There's a few other instances of this throughout the video too.
