We need real reform to weed those types of people out of policing, sadly - as a certain prime-time comedian once said - until the police departments stop hiring peaked in high school types that just want a platform to exert their power over people it's going to continue happening. Secondly about Brett Cooper: Be extremely careful. She has a rather rabid following and don't be surprised if her rubes come after you for this. One thing I will say is that I don't think that 90% of what she posts are of her own opinions. I watch her sometimes (Only in a "lets take a peek at the enemy's playbook" sort of way) and shortly after, Matt Walsh will come out with a differently worded take on the exact same subject.... almost as if the Daily Wire tells them what to talk about.

I once bought a "blue lives matter" bracelet online because I thought it was for us Autistics. When my friend, a wonderful woman of colour, clarified the actual purpose of the movement then I briskly removed it. Yes, police lives matter. Nobody is saying they don't, but it's a direct response to civil rights in the USA. I may not be in the USA, but I'm well aware how poorly marginalised communities get treated.... Disabled, immigrant, lgbt+, albino, and a woman... I don't know the struggles of my bipoc friends, I never will, but I can somewhat understand and I will always empathise.

Political systems and policies affect virtually every facet of our lives. Political decisions affect the economy, environment, healthcare, transportation, energy, education, etc. To not "be political" implies that you literally care nothing about the world at large. Whether or not future generations inherit a habitable planet will largely be determined by political choices and actions. Does it matter whether or not people have breathable air, potable water or edible food? If any of that matters, you NEED to be political. Political action is literally a matter of life and death.

I understand everything you said. However we have no idea about her inner life. Me and my father from the outside would look like a very understanding duo, however I have internalized trauma when it come to my father and because of how he used to abuse me (mentally, physically, emotionally) when as a child. I would never be able to say no to him for something, would never be able to correct him on something without it turning into a big fight and would never have it in me to go in the public to rebuke him on his views, not because he is my father and I love him but because I am scared of him. I am scared of what he would do if I speak against him. Truma is real. I am not saying Sydney is going through something, she might be a whole daddy's girl for all we know, I am saying we don't know what her reasons are and until she is out there wearing a T Shirt for Blue Lives I wouldn't personally hate on her. Tara Mooknee made a video recently on people who claim to be "apolitical" or "moderates" as a means to not have to engage with political talk, mostly because they are well off themselves and don't "have to" engage with politics. But out of basic human compassion, we should involve ourselves in politics. We should read into these things. I'm from Europe and only recently really understood that the European Union has and still does exploit third world countries in their little trade agreements, but it wasn't something I was aware of until I subscribed to more confrontational political content, and I'm glad that I did, despite how initially shocking it was (I must admit, I used to live in the presumption that as bad as Europe is becoming, at least we weren't the US in terms of exploiting the rest of the world... what a stupid lie that was). In any case, I'm glad you're back, Kristina.

It's absolutely delusional for anyone to hate the USA (over other countries) for anything like exploitation or colonialism. Europeans had been at that for hundreds upon hundreds of years before the USA even existed. And where did the USA come from? Who brought slavery and destruction to American soil? THE BRITISH and other Europeans before them. The USA did not exist when slavery was started there. Yet you'll very commonly hear British people say things like "I know America had slavery" uhm no, YOU LOT had slavery. And still do by way of the monarchy.

I agree because she’s such a well known actress.. but at the same time part of growing up is reflecting and learning from your actions and what they represent. You could have a racist parent and not be racist or even completely disagree with them ..but if you don’t there’s a reason for that too. Also politics these days are serious like did you know women barley got the right to medical abortion only in 1973.. it’s literally 2022 THATS INSANE. We already fought for this once and it’s being taken away ?! That’s wild. So yea I’d say these days it is a statement whether we’d like it to be or not because people are fighting for their basic rights right now. If that wasn’t the case then yea, sure ignorance is bliss. I once didn’t bat an eye at politics but now I feel if I don’t understand it I will have my rights stripped from me and that’s the reality for everyone these days.

You shouldn't sacrifice your mental health but if your family members are acting like they're in a cult(an I mean actual cult behavior not if they're fully aware of their behavior) then research has shown that hearing an outside perspective is helpful because the more they're isolated the deeper they fall in. But I understand that some people need to cut them off, my relationship with my parent who can be conservative on many social issues always seems to be healthiest when we're at a distance(not really 100% cut off but distance with a phone call throughout the week)

This is a very complicated and nuanced topic. I am the most left-winged person in my whole family and I live in a red-state where the majority of people are very conservative. My family has been strictly Catholic for generations which plays a HUGE part in their politics. Their world views come from a place of love, but they will say the evilest things out of ignorance. My liberal friend grew up in an apolitical household and she doesn't understand why I don't just fight my family on stuff, try to change their minds, or just cut them off completely. 1. I HAVE argued with them and tried to change their minds and thats exactly WHY I've decided to remain silent about my beliefs. It's because I know that my family won't change and I just end up hurting myself whenever I argue with them. And 2. As much as I hate the disgusting morals of my family, they're my only support system. I'm still emotionally attached to the humanity that exists within them. The compassion that they show towards me as a person, as their daughter/sister is something I can't just LET GO. If I wasn't a part of my family; if I was completely transparent about my identity with them; I know they would want nothing to do with me. But I AM a part of my family and I refuse to be completely transparent with them as a way of protecting myself. I didn't ask for any of this, but it is my shit to deal with. I plan on being transparent someday, when I'm prepared to receive the treatment I've been expecting my whole life based on the things I've heard them say. As of right now, I've learned to pick my battles. I only speak up in response to genuinely heinous remarks with something like, "this media/law isn't for you, there's no need for you to have an opinion about it." basically telling them to shut up, and they do. But if my parents tell me something stupid and pointless like, "delete tik tok, china is using it to spy on us", then I just go "yup mhm" and ignore it. I do believe that someday I can be more transparent with my family and I really hope that I can be an "open door" just incase other relatives in my immediate/extended family feel the same way as me. I would hate it if other family members were also struggling silently and never knew that I was a safe person to speak openly about their beliefs/struggles. It's honestly such a toxic environment just absolutely teeming in guilttrips. They say, "stop making everything about politics" as if they don't already use their religion as an excuse to do that themselves. I've been called shitty things by my parents and family members. It's not fun and I resent them for it, but I genuinely can't imagine life without them. It breaks me every time I dream of leaving, but I know I'm going to do it someday. I have to. And I'm the luckiest person in the world to have one friend in my life that understands. ...I'm sorry, this got real deep and personal. It's just something that hits so close to home. I want people to understand, and I want them to know that I know, I KNOW, what my family is. And I'm aware I look like a hypocrite for being in their lives, but I don't vote like a hypocrite and I refuse to behave like a hypocrite outside of biting my tongue for an hour every Sunday.

I just wanted to add that politics never was just an opinion without a tangent to real lives. It has always been life or death. For marginalized people, for workers, for activists who bled and died to fight for fairer conditions, for civilians in countries the US/imperialist powers invaded. Well she doesn’t have control over what her family does, says or wears. I come from a conservative family as well, I was brainwashed into a lot of disgusting and hateful ways of thinking. When I was 17, I grew out of it and finally got the courage to separate myself from my parents. My parents are still very conservative, very religious, very racist, homophobic, transphobic, everything in the book. My dad is also the kind of person who would wear racist or right wing political merchandise to what is supposed to be just a wholesome birthday party. It just doesn’t make sense to wear something like a blue lives matter shirt to a birthday party but that is unfortunately very common when it comes to being far right wing, basically any and every event is a space to share your racist ideology and be proud of it. Again, something I saw A LOT when growing up and my dad still does these things, I’m honestly embarrassed to even be around him in public. HOWEVER, I still love my parents because they’re my parents, I WANT to get along with them and just see them as my parents without all of the religion and politics. But they have made that impossible for me and I’ve had to seriously consider cutting them out of my life completely once I am in the position to move out. I do think it would have been more appropriate for Sydney to at least blur out his shirt, however I don’t think a lot of people who can’t relate to having conservative parents understand how much damage that could do to their relationship. I know it sounds crazy but that’s because it is crazy, conservatives ARE crazy. I can’t even talk about politics around my dad without him getting literally violently racist, it gets to the point sometimes where he starts saying the hard r slur or threatening to go kill people he disagrees with. He’s even threatened to go kill black protesters out of pure rage, when the riots were happening. If she had blurred out his shirt, that could have created a ticking time bomb in her dad, especially if her parents don’t know that she’s not conservative. That could directly impact their relationship forever, my parents have already threatened to kick me out of their house and disown me and I haven’t even completely told them my political beliefs. Now she doesn’t have to depend on them for shelter or finances like I do, but the relationship a person has with their parents means more than all of the money in the world. If she’s trying to stay on good terms with her parents and not outright be outcasted, then she’s in a pretty sticky situation here. A lot of people say that she needs to have a conversation with her parents about this if she disagrees with them, but I’m sorry it’s just not that simple for everyone. Every time I’ve remotely tried to talk to my parents about political topics, I just get fucking threatened to get kicked out and completely disowned. I have a lot of childhood trauma from the way I was raised in a right wing family as well as Christian cult, so it’s incredibly hard to face these things with my parents who are in complete denial. I do wish she would have either not included the photo with her dad or just blurred out the shirt, but we don’t know the situation with her family and what their relationship is like. It might not be the way mine is, but I do know a lot of people grew up in families where if you don’t submit to their “way of life,” then you will be disowned. So whatever the situation is, this is just something she is going to have to figure out on her own.
@BNL076042 жыл бұрын
I agree with the backlash, maybe if she didn't wanna blur out the images (which I agree she should've) she could've said that those were the views of her parents and not hers. Also, this may be a controversial take, but usually if you hear that distinct angry tone in someone's voice in a video, it's usually a Republican. I have heard that from being in a conservative phase years ago. I do not mean all people, that's why I said distinct, like it's that sorta strained and controlled anger. I recognized that right away. Anger I think is good, you're showing you're standing up for people, you're fighting, but it's that distinct tone... my antenna went up.
