A fresh look at Sydney after the opening of borders.
Sydney has been very good to me during my two pandemic years stranded here. After three decades mostly lived abroad, it's been a great place to reflect on the meaning and value of travel.
While exploring Sydney, I think about travel lessons I'll be hoping to hang onto after my two pandemic years here.

Another great meditation on a very interesting theme Mark, love the idea of quality over quantity. Some great insights as usual. Have shared.

Thanks, Mark. Totally agree. Books, bike, feet, cemeteries. Hopefully we'll be able to get back to Vietnam this year. It will be a roller coaster of emotions.

@@rustycompasstravel no plans right now and sadly our friend Mike's upcoming departure puts it a ways off for me. Vietnam is a special place for me though I'll be back and it'd be great to see you friend!

Mark, thanks for this... Interesting coming from someone that spends his life in pursuit of "international" travel, that you note the pleasures and value in looking closer to home... The last couple of years has exposed the numerous people that are "angry" that "I can't travel", but do they even know their own country, or even their own city.... I grew up in an era when international travel was expensive and as such something to be cherished, yes, it's fantastic that other cultures and environments are so much more accessible, but I fear that is at the expense of missing out on what is outside our own back doors, both culturally and physically. I guess it's not as acceptable to say "I spent my week's holiday exploring the early colonial history of Sydney" as compared to "I went to a resort in Kuta, or Phuket".... Thanks again for not only travel, but thoughts about why, and the impacts of travel.... "Well, I must have my overseas holiday, it's been two years now..." at what carbon cost though ?

Thanks Alistair. Gonna be very interesting to see how things play when we open properly up and what the travel industry will look like. I sense that's not far off.

Thank you Keith! Hoping to head back soon. Stay tuned. Have just been in Cambodia. Waiting for Vietnam's processes to be more clearly explained and the current COVID outbreak to start to ease a tad. Cheers.
