A single mother takes her family on a road trip -- to an unwanted destination.
SYLVIA is used with permission from Richard Prendergast. Learn more at richardprendergast.com.
Mandy and her two little daughters set off with their grandma to the countryside in their car, which they have collectively christened "Sylvia." They blast music on the stereo, plays road trip games, stop for ice cream on the way, and have a wonderful time enjoying the scenery and one another's company.
But what appears to be a carefree family outing is not what it seems, just as Mandy reaches her destination at night -- and prepares to say goodbye to their beloved family car.
Written and directed by Richard Prendergast, this dramatic short is elegantly crafted on all levels, from meticulous writing and editing to beautiful cinematography. All elements of the craftsmanship serve what becomes a moving, emotionally resonant story, whose impact is no less powerful for being so intelligently deployed.
The film takes time and care to set up the familial atmosphere, which is full of warmth, good-natured bickering and the activity and tussle of a typical family with young children. The morning light is radiant, the banter is lively and the children are mischievously eager for candy: all seems fun, with an air of festivity and adventure that is familiar to road trips.
Much of the dialogue and action is focused on the ordinary, loving interactions between Mandy and her daughters and the support and understanding of Mandy's mother. This familial portrait is archetypal in its evocation of togetherness and specific in the small details that make up childhood, from the small toys the kids play with to the mess they make in the car, which has seen a lot of adventures with this family.
But as the storytelling unfolds, small but telling moments rupture the carefree spirit. Mandy fixates on small, poetic details, like the way the ice cream comes out of the machine, or the small music box dancing figurine that the daughters play with. These moments slowly shift the tenor of the film from its amiable, looser tone at the beginning to something more subtly disquieting and heavier in feel. The warm, sun-burnished cinematography shifts to something more muted and anxiously hand-held; the score moves from warmly acoustic to uneasy ambient tones; and Mandy herself shifts into more anxious and haunted emotions, though we're not quite clear yet why.
Actor Jolie Lennon's precise and engaging performance as Mandy holds the film's overall shift together. Her character's anxiety and troubled emotions gently seep into the performance and are subtle and restrained enough to generate a sense of mystery, which works alongside the shift in the film's craft to a darker register. Viewers will wonder if there is something more ominous at work in the overall story, and just why Mandy is selling Sylvia in the first place.
It is a testament to Lennon's performance and the craftsmanship's elegant discernment that the reveal in SYLVIA is both less sensationalistic and more emotional than expected, with a twist that builds upon cinema's innate elasticity in portraying time, memory, internal subjectivity and external reality. Many twists are meant to be clever, but this one is innately tied to Mandy's emotional journey, which makes it all the more powerful when audiences realize the full impact of all of the film's elements. As a result, the conclusion of SYLVIA is tremendously moving and earns its heartwrenching emotions genuinely and honestly -- and is a fitting tribute to the people and story behind the film's events, which is perhaps the most heartbreaking realization of all.

I'm 61 and have been through quite a handful of sadness in my life like the loss of loved ones, trashed dreams and plans, depression, etc. When the car buyer started reading the letter, tears started welling in my eyes, with all the emotions in the film coming at me like some sort of flash flood. I guess when you've experienced loneliness and disappointments in your life, they just stay there inside you forever, and a movie experience like this brings them to the fore and the natural human reaction is to cry.

My father (Nov 12, 1939 - Sept 5, 2017) joined the record club when I was about 8 years old in order to get the Dr. Hook album with Sylvia's Mother. He was a country music fan, but for some reason, this song touched him, and it played in our home for years. Like everyone else commenting, I was caught off guard, and the waterworks are flowing. When the buyer invited her in, she said that she had to go because it was going to rain, that's part of the lyrics to the song. Bravo to the writers and to the actress, well done again, Omeleto!

This film wouldn't have been the same without Dr Hook and Sylvia's Mother. This song means so much to me in real life and I still have multiple copies, one for every vehicle and vinyl to play while I'm puttering through the house. Music really does have a way of working on the soul. Richard did an amazing job bringing that feeling to life in the film.

I actually hit this video by mistake, I had been reaching for a different one, but thought, what the heck, I’ll just watch this. I have decided that these mistakes are the universe nudging me in little ways. I’m never disappointed. What did surprise me was the level of attachment I felt for the characters. My problem with short stories is usually the lack of characters and their history, but I felt a part of every adventure and trip taken in Sylvia, so I was also a part of Sabrina’s journey and was not surprised when she left Sylvia with only one case and the teddy. The reading of the letter was what started the waterworks and I went straight into the ugly cry with hiccups and the whole nine yards. Seeing the after story was such a beautiful closing to this fabulous short. I know nothing about it, but I hope this wins you many awards and helps you on your path. I didn't get it at first because I was thinking she was giving up her children for adoption, then I was like is she going to jail when she told her sleeping mom to look after them... the film is a confusing but I do realize that unless it's a documentary you have to change things up a bit to make things interesting. VERY WELL DONE! The main actress was amazing. The way the story was told kept you guessing and the end is much more horrible than imagined especially when you actually understand what happened in real life. I've already seen this film a few times, as I've been lying in bed with covid, and every time I literally cried my eyes out. Thank you for this most beautiful picture, along with introducing me to fantastic music of Dr. Hook, that I haven't known before. Apart from the line with 'riding with angels', another one that hit me was 'look after the kids while I' m gone'. My God, so much love and pain, she's not able to look after her little ones any more! That's the moment when I'm praying for something to be there after death, as the thought that people should go through such pain, and then just die, is unbearable! To all that lost their beloved, (which in reality means everyone in this world) I hope that one day we shall be reunited.

This was a lovely and heart wrenching short film based on a true story! Attachment! I am thankful that I did not have loves one to die tragically but we had to say farewell to our car last year. It was faithful to us for many many years and we drove it for thousands of miles. The car finally did not pass inspection but still was drivable. We were forced to buy a brand new car. We were thankful to have the resources but we mourned the loss of our old car. There were so many special and loving memories. I am, happy that the real owner of Sylvia was able to be reunited.
