Remarquable !

Brava ! Had read of Sass before, but until now never heard her, A Callas impersonator yes ! But also a soprano of unique and individual qualities. Thank you for introducing her to me....a privilege.

Good entrance. Graceful and expressive gestures. Commanding voice. These are the ingredients for a Lady Macbeth.

In simple fact, she is an amazing singing artist. That was incredible.

Sylvia Sass was born in Hungary and made her debut in 1971. She has sung in most of the major opera house of the world. She is especially renowned for her portrayal of Lady MacBeth in Verdi's opera "MacBeth".

In this part, she's at home, much more than in Norma, in which she showed short of breath and couldn't hold the higher notes. Apart from that, she's a very honnest, humble and emotional singer. I had her Medea, her Macbeth and her Decca recital.

Despite the lack of any clear vowels, consonants and a lack of a chest voice this is still phenomenal. Imagine what it could have been with a bit more technical delving. A beautiful metallic feminine swan voice.

Faust075, I AM TALKING ABOUT Callas TELLING THATTO Caballé, NOT TO Sass. So, Callas told Caballé that she (Caballé) was her successor (Callas's)

First-rate interpretation--she even sings the high D perfectly at the end. Many more famous singers just skip it. A much underappreciated diva. Is she still singing?I wish I had seen her in person. Plus, she has a beautiful physique and face for the stage.
@Faust07515 жыл бұрын
Sass never studied with Callas !!! She visited Callas in her Paris appartement in the mid 70s. Spent there 4 hours, talking and taking some advice from Callas, particularly on how to sing Traviata, but that's it. Callas certainly never told her "you will be the new Callas" !!! Journalists however did presented Sass as the "new Callas" ... before she ruined her voice trying to imitate the greatest Opera singer of all times instead of trying simply to be herself.

Absolutely superb. Wonderful phrasing, great mellow darkness to the voice. And an excellent dramatic interpretation. Who is she? Just heard Nadja Michael sing this live at Chicago's Lyric and although she has a glorious body which they used to the hilt in the production, she is going to wreck her voice singing this role.

@ploplisphilin It's only a D-flat. :) (I've sung this scene.)
@CzarDodon16 жыл бұрын
I heard her live in Il Tabarro and Die Ferne Klang (Schreker) back in the eighties and the voice was anything but big, the orchestra covered her very often. There are many good things here but her woolly diction is a fatal flaw.
@Faust07515 жыл бұрын
What successor ? Where is she now ? She began to be known in the world of Opera in 1977/78 when she sang for the first time at La Scala and the Met. By the end of 1980, she was already over and her voice ruined, because she overworked it with roles that were not for her. Too bad ! because she could have had a great career. She was indeed in the line of "Callas" but she wanted too much, too quick, too soon.
@agnes151019685 жыл бұрын
She had a lung disease, which wrecked her career, very soon after it had started at all.
@brrehusebye72982 жыл бұрын
You are probably right. She finished her studies in two years instead of four. Like so many singers at the time, she was inspired by the vocal versality of Callas. Bad for her. The debut recital on Decca shows signs of short breaths several places. What makes Sass a great artist, is her abilities to interpret Lady Macbeth in a very scary evil way. In these scene its a woman you do not want to come across on a dark road.

Oh girl, let's not get ahead of ourselves...Nadja has no voice left to wreck. She's turned a modest mezzo instrument into a caterwauling top-heavy mess. My sympathies that you had to pay money to watch that disaster unfold.

I revoke my comment stating Sass is a Callas impersonator !! There are certainly Callas influences in evidence...tonally and in terms of repotoire. But yes she most definitely a dramatic soprano in her own right and a fine one at that.
