Nice! This is pretty much exactly how Filipino martial arts does things when fighting: limb destructions, or "defanging the snake." Elbows into their fist strikes, knees into their kicks, etc, until your opponent can't fight you anymore. It's awesome to see how different martial arts traditions end up with really similar strategies; it's like a convergent evolution of techniques. Thanks!

A lot of people have broken their shins from being victim to those nice little checks. I actually learned this type of check the hardest way in Lumpini Stadium when it was done to me. My leg wasn't broken it just hurt like crazy. After that I thought right... I'm using that :)
@caustixsoda81255 жыл бұрын
A lot of these breaks are due to bad diet, overtraining and just bone density gone to crap. As odd as that sounds your diet (greens), bone density (constantly hitting the heavy bag) and your overall wellbeing (athletic fitness) plays a role in the bone breaks. Usually it's down to overtraining and bone density (diet). But overtraining or totally messing up technique (hitting with the side and not point of the shin) is a big cause of these freak breaks. It's hard to snap a shin bone. I used to think the same in Thailand when fighting but greens, sleep, training and good health (not overtraining) = strong as a mofo! Even the elites fall foul to overtraining and bad diet sometimes. We're all prone to it.

This is a common technique in Kali (Filipino Martial Arts) where they "spike" kicks as well as punches (by using fists against punches or punching the funny bone or muscle, often called a gunting). I was taught this as Muay Thai by Erik Paulson in the mid-90s and IIRC got it from Chai Sirisute. Utterly changed my entire approach to low kicks. A little tip he gave was that you don't have to "aim" your knee when the kick is coming to outside your thigh. Just bring your heel quickly to the inside of your knee and the kick will land on your knee 99% of the time. To the inside, you pivot on your foot just as you would when throwing a kick.
@tientruong2007 Жыл бұрын
What do you mean heel to inside of your knee, do you mean you want to heel to kick your hamstring/butt?
@ivangushkov36515 жыл бұрын
Wow that is cool. This is EXACTLY how I was taught to do it in my Kyokushin dojo. Once in sparing I threw a full power low kick and it was blocked exactly like that. I had a flimsy cloth shin guard, which I threw away after the session because I realised it just gave me false security and not much more. Had to sit out a few rounds...

Sylvie, thank you for this information. The low kick is the most dangerous weapon - I have loose many fights by low kicks - simply can not stand anymore. And my own low kicks are not yet so good. The reason for this fact is that at the time I started to train Kyokushin Karate the low kick was not yet introduced as a weapon, so I still have to catch it up. So, I'm glad you came with this blocking technique against low kicks. But as you said this shin-to-shin block only works if your own shin is already hard - because we are still talking about a pain game here for both fighters. So, we must harden our shins first before using this technique, am I right? Another thing is indeed how to train this because it's all about timing and reading abilities.

For those worried about damage to the knees pay close attention to Kru Noi when he checks. Look at the contact surface of Kru Noi and the contact surface of Sylvie he checks very low on the leg almost ankle not higher up where it's denser. With great timing and footwork you can check a person even on the foot and really make them stop kicking.

Dude, do you think Thai boxers just made this shit up the other day or something? They've been refining this strategy to counter low kicks literally for centuries. Do you think, in all that time, nobody ever considered damage to the patella? If this check commonly broke the patella it would fall into disuse in no time. Of course there's always a chance of injury when you fight, particularly full contact, but this particular method has a long history of success.

I recently saw a similar technique where you block hooks to the body by hurting your opponent's hands, wrist and forearms on the tips of your elbows. You can do this by pointing the tips of your elbows into hooks to your body. It lands on your opponent's hand, wrist and forearm. It's legal in boxing. I saw it in this KZbin video a few days ago: The Most Secret Moves In Boxing Revealed | Volume 1 | How To Do Padwork
@HEAVENTWA5 жыл бұрын
He made another video the other day on this technique, this time instructing his fighter to point his elbow behind his back. I just watched some of the video by fast-forwarding to different parts, but it looked like the boxer was trying to block kidney shots to his back, but it couldn't be since it's against the rules. He used to train Roy Jones Jr. If you can block hooks to the body in a boxing match by doing this, then this is probably allowed in a Muay Thai match.

on the side of "just taking it", I saw the entire Kyokushin team destroyed by a Sanda team in a KK against the world competition. All the Sanda people did was 1. let a low kick land 2. grab it off the impact and raise the captive leg. Done. They could do whatever they wanted after that. Considering that a low kick doesn't do much on the first 2-3 hits, and a punch to the face does, it's a very good strategy. Checking a low kick is more of a missed opportunity, even if you hurt your opponent with the check.

The shin would probably break first, especially if your leg is tucked sufficiently such that your kneecap sticks out. If your leg is too straight, you might injure the tendons around your knee if their kick presses in really hard, but your patella is way harder than that.
