To all of you English speakers who love Sylvie Vartan and this marvellous song as much as I do, here's the lyrics in French with English translation. Enjoy! La Maritza, c'est ma rivière The Maritza is my river Comme la Seine est la tienne As the Seine is yours Mais il n'y a que mon père But there is only my father Maintenant qui s'en souvienne Now who remembers Quelquefois Sometimes De mes dix premières années From my first ten years Il ne me reste plus rien I have nothing left Pas la plus pauvre poupée Not the poorest doll Plus rien qu'un petit refrain Nothing left but a little refrain D'autrefois From the past La la la... La la la... Tous les oiseaux de ma rivière All the birds of my river Nous chantaient la liberté We sang of freedom Moi je ne comprenais guère I hardly understood Mais mon père, lui, savait But my father knew Ecouter Listen Quand l'horizon s'est fait trop noir When the horizon has become too dark Tous les oiseaux sont partis All the birds are gone Sur les chemins de l'espoir On the paths of hope Et nous on les a suivis And we followed them A Paris In Paris De mes dix premières années From my first ten years Il ne reste plus rien, rien There's nothing left, nothing Et pourtant les yeux fermés And yet with eyes closed Moi j'entends mon père chanter I hear my father singing Ce refrain This refrain La la la... La la la...

Beside nostalgia, the song also touches on themes of freedom and migration. The birds singing of liberty along the Maritza represent a sense of freedom that Vartan (born in Bulgaria) did not fully understand as a child, but her father did. This imagery of birds and freedom is juxtaposed with the darker times when the horizon grew bleak, prompting a migration to Paris in search of hope and a better future. This journey symbolizes the broader experience of many who leave their homeland in pursuit of new opportunities, carrying with them the memories and cultural heritage of their origins.

I moved on many times and every time it hurt like hell. But this time the moving on part wasn't just one time thing. Everyday I tried to move on. Everyday it was like heaven and then hell. I imagined a thousand scenarios and hurt myself. I had to choose between two things and I chose wisely I think. Yeah. At least whenever I want, I can come back to this memory and relive it. But if I had shared it with the person, it would have been spoiled, rotten, ruined. I have to let it go now. This song will always remind me of this feeling of letting go. It hurts thousand times but also powerful like the la la la ...so much energies. I have to let it go. If it comes back in other form, it can. It's up to it. But I won't control it anymore. No more controlling.
