Syma X5C XRC-1 Quadcopter Tips to make it fly better by Roy Dawson video. This is a perfect starter quadcopter. It’s probably the best of a first-time flyer. There are tons of videos on this design. Part of the fun is figuring out how to improve the performance of the quadcopter. One easy way is reducing the overall weight of this little monster. Also included is a great charger for you and a good battery choice for longer flights. Good luck and happy flying.
#drone #rcdrone #syma
Adding the 6 grams back on applies if you are flying outside in the wind. Inside it will lift off at a 1/4 throttle and fly longer. Flying outside and no wind no need to add any weight to it.

I removed the props entirely and I can get almost 20 minutes of flight time out of it. Next I'll take out three of the motors and move the final one into the middle. I'll chop off three of the arms as well. Now it has a really cool look to it. I don't know why no one has thought of this before. Wait...

My neighbor did this, it changed the whole attitude of the quad, flight characteristics were really bad afterwards. Trying to get every hole exactly the same on each side is impossible s it was off balance and had to be re calibrated and adjusted for these differences from side to side. Also, even a small crash caused damage because the rigidity of the chassis was compromised. All of these issue to gain "approximately" 1 minute of extra flight time. He got 11 minutes with the stock set-up...and 12 mins and 5 seconds with the new set-up. I'm sure it would have been a greater difference if he had went to a bigger battery...but then again, the battery would have made a difference without those other mods. Just my 2 cents worth based on what i saw in person.

Thanks for the video. I enjoyed how you lightened it up. I just bought the Syma X5C-1 Under $50 on Amazon after spending a ton of time on KZbin and reading reviews. It will be my first flying RC ever. That is something because I am 58 years old. Thanks for the links. I held off with batteries because I wanted to do more research as i heard the charger and battery that comes with it just gets you going. I will look these up.

Appreciate the effort but all that work to reduce the quad's weight by 10% wasn't very efficient. I have the newer X5SW and simply bought a 5 pack of 1200 mhr batteries for like $10. They replace the 500 mhr battery it comes with. So I more than doubled my flight time for the price of a lunch. The frame and parts to these drones are so light to begin with removing every gram of material possible will gain you what, a few extra seconds? Keep it stock and buy better batteries. That's my $.02.
@wingmanalive
@wingmanalive 6 жыл бұрын
Let me expand a bit to educate those contemplating doing what I suggested. Yes buying batteries with bigger mhr ratings will increase flight time but it does come at a cost. Bigger batteries mean higher weight so it will tax the drone's motors further to maintain lift. On cheaper brushed motors found on these drones that means reduced life. I know because I've killed one drone so far by using the larger batteries. The motors are cheap online and not hard at all to replace but bottom line is this is a $30 drone today so it's up to you if it's worth fixing. Mind you I did get a solid 15+ hours use before the motors died and even after I replaced them it still never flew the same.

Am I missing something? You drill holes in it to reduce weight by 7 grams just to add a 6 gram weight?
@maxvanraden129
@maxvanraden129 8 жыл бұрын
This is such a bad idea... Not only does it look bad (in my opinion), it seriously compromises the structural integrity of the quad. Even a light bump with that frame is going to break it because there's no way for the impact to disperse evenly. Beyond that, as a primarily outdoor quad, the added drag from those holes will far outweigh (no pun intended) any benefit from the decreased weight, especially if you factor wind into it. Ultimately, just get a second battery. This is a really good way to pointlessly ruin a perfectly good quad.

Nice vid! Just wanted to share, other parts can be easily removed to shed weight. The X5C has 26 screws holding the body together, most of which can be removed without significantly affecting its structural integrity. Removed screws, battery door, LEDs, cutting the outer landing gear in half, etc, save about 2-3 grams. 67 gram dry weight is achievable without much more effort. Tip: for running a lightened X5C outdoors in the wind, run a larger battery. 850mAh fits perfect and is about 2 grams heavier than the stock 500mAh. An even heavier 1200mAh battery is ideal to use in breezy conditions. Both give the X5C a better center of gravity and enhanced flight performance with longer overall flight times with the weight reduction. With all of the extra fat removed, I'm curious as to how an ultra-light-weight X5C would fly with upgraded X5HC blades and a 1200mah battery. Might have to find out myself... thanks for sharing the vid!

Hi Roy, Has a nice wild look to it. I have a Syma X5c also which I fly once in awhile out doors only. I have the FPV system that was made for the Syma in which case I like to get certain videos in around close areas where I don't want to fly my CX20. But I can't believe that all those holes don't compromise the strength. Also you mention that you add weight to it to fly outside, there goes your reduction. It does look cool though. Thanks for sharing your project.

Gus Plus You weaken the airframe and made the electronics vulnerable. It remember me to my motocross days when some of those wanabe professionals drilled out anything to safe weight, go faster and end up with 2 half motorcycles after the first jump. If it was needed, the factory would have done it. That goes for this flying machine to. Ever did some thinking about the balance? The energy you safe with the lighter weight flow directly back into the engines to sort out the disbalance you possible have created. This holes also create a bigger drag when the machine fly, so it need more power for the same speed.

I own one of these things and they are light as it is, not to mention a 750 may burn up the quad much faster, I have a bind and fly on the way since my original one actually shorted out after lots of abuse in its stock form without camera or prop guards and I am a night flier so those added holes may affect how it looks in pitch black making orientation much harder from what I can see. May be good for indoor use but with the wind I have here being around a constant 10 to 15 mph I need the weight and sometimes that is not enough. Largest battery I have put through mine is a 650 mah lipo and it is hard to get inside of that battery bay honestly without cutting out the bottom support for the battery.

My next recommended project... X6 Trantula. You will not want to drill to many holes on this one, as the plastic is almost see through thin, when lit up with led. If you think Syma X5 flies great... you will be blown away by this one. Get the blue/white one and switch the directional leds around. Break it in by flying your first dozen flights by mostly hover. www.gearbest.com/rc-quadcopters/pp_139651.html

@InTheSh8
@InTheSh8 8 жыл бұрын
+Stepan Shurgay Yes, but he centers the weight. that's a huge difference and benefit for a vehicle that can rotate. Before the weight distribution was more evenly. Now, like in a good bicycle wheel there's lesser weight at the outside. It remains to be studied if the holes are a little bit to big and make the wind hold grip on the machine. This could for certain outweigh the benefit of that weight loss when flying in windy conditions. But it's possible that the wind blows right through this swiss-cheese quad, LOL

The only useful thing here is higher capacity battery. Charger really does not have anything to do with quadcopter itself. So you made it better then it came from the factory by making it worse?

I'm not going to lie man this is kind of a joke. I can understand weight reduction but why drill holes why not sand it down so it's paper thin. all you're doing is creating lots of drag especially if it's windy out. you are allowing air to flow through the unit causing drag. let's face it it looks ridiculous like this. you may as well just cut to pieces of pipe that are really flat shut the motors in the Flipboard to it and call it a day.

The drone looks like a switzerland cheese but improving fly time - of course ....because of the weight ...

You just made it much weaker in a crash and now the arms have no stiffness and twist easily now. Plus wind drag from wind going through holes now less aerodynamic now. Installing a larger mAh lipo battery would give better flight times than this mod. Nice try though.

Well now its much less aerodynamic and it has a much weaker body. It's a compromise, not exactly an improvement. Sure, in no wind situations it'll fly well but forget trying to fly it high without the wind pushing it several houses away. And there's wind on most days. Since it's lighter, it'll take less force to move it so taking a video of the surrounding landscape or a sunset is much more difficult. Not to mention that there's much less protection from debris, water etc. This is a fantastic indoor drone now but taking it outside is a terrible idea.
