With a stripped down drone (no camera, guards) flown outside in average wind in mode 2 a different $7 battery will increase your flight time from 7 min 20 seconds to 11 1/2 minutes. Suggests a different battery charger to extend life of batteries. Soldered a different antenna to extend control from 150 up to 450 feet.

I got a 6 pack of heiokey 720mah batteries and a 6 port charger for like less than 40$ on Amazon. If your really wanting to you can basically fly nonstop as long as you keep putting batteries on charger as soon as they cool off. Great little drone. Replacement parts kits for it are only 15-20$ with couple sets of blades, 4 motors, LED strips, blade guards, 4 gearboxes, and an entire empty shell. Yay!

Very informative, Dustin. I tried to fly in 7 mph winds today and you're right on the mark. Wind took it and threw it into a tree half a block away. I had a hard time locating it so I kept pushing the accelerator and I saw it floating under a tree, then it hit the tree again and the standard battery popped out. Had to play with it indoors.I like its stability. I had the Hubsan x4 before this one and believe it or not it flew away. lol. Just beginning. I ordered a Solo and the DJI Phantom 3. Had the option for an Inspire but saw what damage it could do and opted out. No manslaughter charge for this guy.

Glad you recovered your X5C! It's the perfect learner quad for sure. I'm in the process of reviewing a Q7 (X5C replica) which can handle the wind better and is more agile. lucky you to be able to afford a phantom 3 and a solo. Either one would be a dream to own for me. Hope you get some good practice in before you maiden those great quads. Congrats and good luck! :)

Hi Dustin, Thanks again for the tutorial. My charger finally arrived along with the 750 mAh battery. The charger is an impressive piece of hardware! I read somewhere it was a re-branded version of a high end unit that sells for $200. I also added two 500 ohm resisters to each set of the LEDs which increased the flight time by an extra 2-3 minutes!
@DustinDunnill9 жыл бұрын
Great! Are the lights still visible an lit up?
@MrSlowpokee9 жыл бұрын
Dustin Dunnill They are about 1/2 the brightness on the green and about 1/3 on the yellow LEDs. You can't really see them during the day even with the stock brightness. I am not confident enough to fly it at night so the extra flying time was worth the effort. They are bright enough to see the status of the linking between the controller. ;-)

@Josh Ya, not sure why I can't directly reply to your comments so hope you see this. With my experiences using this stock charger and others for cheaper r/c, the circuitry is of low quality and the stock battery built-in circuit board in conjunction with stock battery charger will not maintain battery very well and you'll end up killing your batteries (stock and upgraded) sooner than if you spent $30 on a decent smart charger which will make your battery's long term life longer. Just my experiences over the past years in the hobby. It also depends on production quality as well. There is probably a lot of defects produced that may contribute to this opinion.

By they way, the "performance" isnt affected by the battery upgrade, just the duration, they both deliver 3.7v at whatever current the speed controller will allow. Eg. 500mAh battery = 500 milli-amps for 1 hour, (or 1 milli-amp for 500 hours) A 750mAh battery is just a bigger "fuel tank" of the same 3.7 volts.
@DustinDunnill9 жыл бұрын
More "weight" will always effect "performance" of an aircraft. The larger lipo weighs more than stock.
@dratsab1980able9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but just incase people were confusing output with capacity, and expecting an increase in rpm, speed or response, If its purely for filming instead of aerobatics, I reckon a beefier battery from a phone would provide the duration at the cost of agility, and the extra weight may make for a more stable camera platform? 2650mAh from a 29g L-ion, think thats a 14g increase from the stock battery, with potentially 5 times the Watts.

Nice vid thanks. I have a Skytech M68R that looks like an exact copy of the X5C. Only difference I know of is it has headless mode. Just wanted to say in your observations you talk about it dying quick when your low batt warning lights go off. I haven't flew mine a lot but it still has good power when blinking. I realize they are different name brands but they really appear to be exact clones, controller and all. Does yours die quick with the stock battery too?
@DustinDunnill9 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yes, have 2 stock batteries and 1 upgraded battery and with all of them the lights start flashing just before it dies. Maybe it's just this model or the unit have.. not sure but doesn't seem very useful for the lights to flash right a few seconds before power loss. I just time the flights now.

Thanks Dustin; enjoyed the video. I may have missed it, can you provide a link to the battery charger you showed us? And more importantly, can you provide a link to the connector you use to charge the Syma X5 stock battery with said charger? I am not sure what that connector is called.

Hey John, sorry I forgot to include the link for my charger. I'm reading on the upgraded batteries the leads are backwards and need to be reversed before we use them. Did you have to do this or was everything correct for simple plug and play? Thanks for the help and review.
@jmjm0039 жыл бұрын
Polarity to be exact is what I'm talking about. Seems most people that are saying this seem to only have one connector on their battery unlike the one you show has two connectors. I believe they also came from hobbyking (?). I ordered the exact battery you have listed and just curious if you had to reverse the leads on the plug. Thanks again. I feel as if you would have explained this if you had to do so but I'm still asking.

The one from the link I post did not have reversed polarity. I did check it with a volt meter just to be safe and it was correct out of the package. No switching necessary. you should definitely check just to be safe.

How can the stock charger overcharge your batteries when the power comes from regulated USB or AC power? The stock chargers are not actually a charger, but are a connector. It's basically a straight wire and has no electronics other than a red LED to show when complete.

Hi thanks. The X charger I got came with an assortment of cables that I was able to get to work with the stock battery. Greetings, I have had a heck of a time locating the connector type for the "white" plug which is not JST. The Nano-tech has both types which is great however, I have 3 stock batteries with just the white connector. You can upgrade the X5C-1 to 8.5mm motors using FY326 assemblies I picked up on gearbest. I had to use a 7/64 drill bit on the mounting holes to fit the post on the arm but otherwise works great and the performance increase is pronounced.

Do you get a battery low warning or something so you know to land you quad, or they just go down like struck flies? I found a X5C-1 on ebay for like 60$, and i'm thinking i'd like one as a first drone, but cheap usually means crap. Can you also replace the camera with something HD?
@DustinDunnill9 жыл бұрын
Radu Lupu Hey Radu, The version I have is the X5C-1 also. You get blinking lights when battery runs out of juice and it's time to land. You have to land immediately with the one I have because it will slowly drop not long after. Still the x5c1 is to this date the most stable of all the mini's I've flown and I've reviewed quite a bit plus have 3 more i'll be reviewing this week. For a beginner the x5c1 still takes the cake. I'm also reviewing the 1080p HD RunCam this week. Just strapped it to the bottom of the x5c1 and it handles it well. You will reduce airtime by a few minutes but it is capable of carrying it. I'll have a review and vids up this weekend. Hope this helps :)
@Yefatbastard9 жыл бұрын
Radu Lupu Have a look at Banggood dot com before you drop $60 on ebay.. And yes the X5C pretty much just drops like a rock when the battery gets low, yes the lights start flashing but it is already on it's way to the ground when they do.. I also fly fuel powered planes. So I'm used to using a timer to tell me when it's time to land. I set it to 7 minutes and then only fly around close till it drops.. Saves me a lot of walking.

Dustin Dunnill Thanks, just wasn't sure since I've never dealt with this type of plug before. I'll definitely be getting a better charger soon, hopefully that will also eliminate the slow USB charging I have to deal with now :/
@DustinDunnill9 жыл бұрын
Right on. Remember it's not good to charge lipos too quickly. The rule of thumb is to only charge a lipo @ 1C unless the battery specifically says it can be charged at a higher rate. Example: If your charging a 500mah lipo, only charge it at .5 amps, 1000mah lipo only charge at 1 amp and so on. Doing this will extend life and help prevent any heating /shorts/fires.

Hi friend , I would like to now if the Syma X5C can stay on the rain .. Thanks

It is not waterproof and you should not fly in the rain or it will probably break.

I wired in 2, 3.7/1000mah batteries out of a couple spent vapes and left the C type charger connected and tucked it all in so it looks like its kinda sorta supposed to be there lol. With all 3 batteries running it it flies for about 45 minutes. But the really neat part was that it actually lifts the extra weight really well and flys it well to. But, it screws up the trim characteristics so bad where the center of its gravity is lowered, any time you change direction flying wfo, it automatically does a flip, sometimes 2. Its actually pretty neat to fly like that lol

Dustin, I have just replaced one motor in my X5C1 but it still won't take off, and all props seem to work now. Any possible solutions? Should I replace all 4 motors? Thanks!
@davidrowe58228 жыл бұрын
+Dean F Check your propellers. It's very specific as two rotate one way and two rotate the other way. This exact thing happened to me where all 4 motors were turning but I was getting no lift. It was not that obvious to me so I referenced a photograph of the aircraft and noticed I had the propellers inverted. So...Check those...You should have two sets of props: 2 that rotate one way and 2 that rotate another. Look at the photographs of the box or here on Google and compare the shapes of the propellers to help you determine which one goes on which portion of your aircraft. Happy flying!

I am new to drone craze and I have a couple of questions that are probably dumb questions. first is... in videos, where do I need to go to find the link in the decription so I can look at where they actually buy the stuff one the video I am watching?? Alsooo All of the usb chargers that come with the drone say to plug the usb into a computer usb. Can I just plug it into the usb charger that came with my phone. I mean the adapter part that plugs into the wall socket and has the usb port in it. Can I just plug the usb end into the adapter that is plugged into the wall. Sorry if these are dumb questions but I don't want to ruin a drone because I did something wrong.

sounds like one of your motors are going bad. Try to spin it with your finger to get it started then fly. Otherwise replace motor.

Where did you get the connector to work with the charger and the Syma X5C?
@DustinDunnill9 жыл бұрын
I custom made my own for the stock batteries but you can also use the red JST plug if you get the same upgraded battery I have. you can find cheap adapters depending on your configuration. you choose.

what connector do you use between the X-charger and the 'copter batteries?

Hey Keith, I cut the end connector off stock charger and soldered my own adapter with a deans connector on opposite end to plug into xcharger.

I notice the batteries from Samsung phones are the exact same power but are 2200Mah. They are double the weight of the originals but 4 times the juice. But they have 3 pad charging connector. They are 10 bucks a peice. I happen to have a few. I'm wondering if they can be used in the quad by soldering wires on the terminal pads and ignore the middle one. Then use a normal RC charger to charge them. I'm also looking in old cell phones to see if I can find a better camera that is easy to modify. I like your antenna mod. 23 bucks gets you a complete rebuild kit that includes a complete quad and x4 sets of props, accept the flight board and controller.

Anyone knows if two Syma X5C-1 can fly simultaneously, each with its own remote? I know that one transmitter can run two of them simultaneously, but that is not what I care for. I want to know if me and a friend can race them side-by-side.
@DustinDunnill9 жыл бұрын
From what i hear, you should be able to. You just have to turn on and bind to each controller separatel. You may have issues if you turn them on and try binding at the same time.

Question : Can we run this quad ( Syma X5C-1 ) for more than +30 minutes continuously ( 4X batteries ) without burning the motors ( motors become dead ) ?
@DustinDunnill9 жыл бұрын
I haven't tested running it more than around 12 minutes with an extended 750mah lipo so I couldn't say. But I would assume you would definitely shorten motor life as weight and longer runtime = more motors heat / sooner burnt motor brushes.
@PierreArbour9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the rapid response. If i use the stock batteries X5 continuously ( without leaving the motors cool down ), will the motors burn ? I ask because my WLToys V686G burns the motors after 25 minutes flight time without cool down...
@DustinDunnill9 жыл бұрын
I have run it through 2 lipos back to back several times mixed with normal use with no motor failures for months. Have had a single motor failure since purchase this past Christmas if that helps. :)

This is a great drone, no question, but I was somewhat disappointed when I read the manual and saw that it had only a 7 minute flight time with the 500 mAh battery. I recently bought a few 600 mAh batteries and don't really know how long one lasts. If Dustin's 750 mAh battery lasts 11-12 minutes, how long would a 600 mAh battery last? Thanks for the help!
@ITALGT7 жыл бұрын
600mAh batteries are not ideal for the X5C. For a few dollars more, invest in 850mAh batteries. They are as big as you can go without modifications. The battery door fits tight with these batteries, but you can make them fit easier with a little trimming on the door. Better yet, leave the door off to save weight. 1200mAh batteries are a tight fit, but will work great if you remove the lower battery support brace. 15+ minute flight times are not uncommon, especially when the X5C has been lightened. Happy flying!

Hi Dustin, You seem to have try a few quad and have quite a knowledge in them. I'm looking at the best econo quad to shoot video. I want to shoot video that is usable. I would like to be able to see what I shoot. I don't mind buying a quad and camera or anyother parts for it to get to the result I want. I would need a decent fly time of about 10-20min. Which quad would you recommend and what mod should I do to it.
@DustinDunnill9 жыл бұрын
Hi Ermen, so far from what I've reviewed. I would recommend the mjx x600 kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6ibq4esrKiNopo It has tons of lift and can carry a small action Cam for 9-11 minutes depending on battery. Your video will get shaky if wind picks up but if you use some techniques to dampen vibrations you can eliminate jello. Thats my recommendation for cheapest route. Then moving up to $200+ range for GPS quad and gimbal for very steady video in many conditions Cheerson CX-20 Quanum Nova Quadcopter Drone - Mod…: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ip7QhWqaocaHnpY Cheerson CX20 Quanum Nova Quad Copter Drone - Mau…: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m36tZ4iem690Z5I

Dustin Dunnill If I go with the CX-20 which model would recommend (the open source or another model) Also, I think that the Go pro is probably the best camera for it but it very expansive, what would you recommend for this drone. Is there any gymbal model that you can control the camera that is steady? Is the CX-20 work with my Iphone right away or should an add-on must be purchase for that.
@ErmenegildoConte9 жыл бұрын
Dustin Dunnill HI Dustin, Thanks again for your suggestions. Looking at CX-20 so I can add a good camera but the price for the top go pro is too expansive. So I'm looking at the CX-22 that comes with it own gimbal (is it good?) The HD camera 1080p but not a gopro quality for sure and a FPV screen. I'm wondering if it would be a wise choice or should I go with Cx-20 get a cheaper GOpro, do the mods and use my cell phone for FPV. What your take on the CX-22 open source? thanks again for this training video.
@DustinDunnill9 жыл бұрын
Open source, so you can add all the Mods and upgrade software. There are some cheaper alternatives to gopro. I will be doing a full review of this Cam in the next week: m.gearbest.com/action-cameras/pp_169231.html

Recommendation: at about 12:30 you're "droning on" (see what I did there?) at the BOTTOM of your vocal pitch range, so you have ZERO intonation or range available, especially downward. Being able to drop pitch (go lower) is as critical in communication as being able to go up. Down is common for ends of sentences, conclusions, etc. Up is good for expression, excitement, or at the end for questions or challenges. at 12:32 you suddenly go into a more expressive voice - and what you should notice about it is your AVERAGE pitch. THIS is where your natural voice is most comfortable whether or not you use it there. Speaking at the bottom can actually cause permanent damage to your vocal cords over time. The easiest way to find your natural pitch is to imagine raising your voice to get someone's attention, like, say, a child. You don't want to sound angry, but you want to sound firm. Imagine the expression "No. I'm going to give you tow three to stop that." You're not angry. But notice where your pitch is. This is a great place to use your voice for public speaking. Thanks for the helpful video-even 4 years later!

What if - you parallel 2 of the 750mAh batteries with double sided tape? Wouldn't that double flight time or is there some taboo about that?
@DustinDunnill8 жыл бұрын
You could but the quad will struggle to lift the weight, motors will fail sooner, flight will be sluggish. I'd stick with around the 750mah size for fun, longevity of craft.
@southernexposure1238 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that very helpful information. I'm getting 6 to 8 minutes of flight from my first drone (I see that's nominal) and was wanting to increase flight time or decrease charge time or both. Charge time for me is around an hour. My charger is the simplest available, just a USB cord. My battery doesn't remove to be charged and instructions say don't try to remove the battery. Maybe after gaining better flight skills I'll shop for a more robust drone.
@DustinDunnill8 жыл бұрын
The X5C battery should remove from quad. I'd get a skyrc B6 $30 charger if you think you'll buy more batteries and RC

Mine isn't a Syma X5C its brand is Aerodrone X6. It has no OFF/ON switch. Two wire connector leads engage and unplug at the tail end to turn ON/OFF. I assume the same problems would apply if I overweighted the battery in this one. I will make note of the charger you recommend becaue I do want to get another one that's bigger. Thanks for the information.

Just ordered this, hope it is as good as everyone makes out!!! How high does the drone go?
@DustinDunnill9 жыл бұрын
Directly overhead will be worst range stock of maybe 75 to 150 feet. If you do range mod and fly more horizontally away and up from you, you should see control up between 250-400 feet depending on electrical interference and obstacles around.

I've bought several 600mah batteries and I get about 11-12 minutes of flight time... So, why does your 750mah only gives 11 minutes?
@DustinDunnill9 жыл бұрын
Not sure, how aggressive and how windy is it when you get those times? There are many factors involved.

Looks like times will vary. Could also be due to differences in C rating. Higher C rating can discharge faster giving quad more power (punch) but will deplete lipo faster.
