13:09 When you meet Gwyn, he doesn't use his lightning because he's been consumed long ago by the First Flame, his hollow body a vessel fueled by the First Flame to defend it, the game heavily hints at that by having him wield a flaming sword and only being able to create fire bursts from his hand, when you fight him, Gwyn Lord of Sunlight is no more and the Lord of Cinder has long taken his place.

I think it's also important to note that you cannot trust Kaathe. After all, he is responsible for the Abyss and the fate of New Londo. So when he says, that you were tricked, it's not easy to know if that is true, although it does seem so.
@phunnyfillip

I think Kaathe’s untrustworthiness comes more from recklessness than pure dishonesty. He’s *right* about The Age of Dark, but he failed to consider what could happen if the Oolacile sorcerers or the Four Kings twisted dark for their own ends and it blew up in his face both times.

In DS1 there's no "good" ending. You either get manipulated and screwed by Kaathe or Frampt, you get to take your pick. @fakub2026

@@JonaD757 The Ringed City takes places WAY after the Firekeeper Ending. It takes place at the literal end of the world and everything's dead. There's no natural cycles, just an illusion of a city and all the Pigmies being killed for the last remains of the Dark Soul. Also is all up to interpretation on the Firekeeper ending but letting the fire die does nothing in the long run. The fire will rekindle itself again and again, you cannot escape the cycle Gwyn created. Even if you choose to let the flame fade away its going to come back. I take the Firekeeper ending more like..."I'm not going to play by this world rules, I reject both Fire and Dark." But in the end it doesn't matter what you choose. That's what Aldia discovers in DS2.

Out of all the things in Dark Souls, I think my favorite thing is Solaire and his boundless positivity and enthusiasm. This story has always been set in a hostile world that's harsh and unforgiving to be in, but even when things seem meaningless and hollow he's there to remind us of how jolly cooperation and human connection give us meaning and a reason to persevere. The creator of Dark Souls has quite the soft spot for the character as well. And it's interesting how he put the "praise the sun" gesture into the game against producers' insistence that he leave it out because of how silly the idea seemed to them. Yet it's heartwarming how the internet fell in love with the character anyway. It's amazing how he's so deeply linked to Dark Souls' greatest call for players who persevere through tough challenges - Don't you Dare go Hollow, and Praise the Sun! \🌞/

You can totally play Scholar of the first sin, as it also contains all the DLC already and is kinda bit remastered version. Scholar of the first Sin is a lot less forgiving to newcomers though. The enemy and item placements are sort of like a master quest version of the game. It's great if you already know DS2 like the back of your hand and you want a new challenge, but a first time player might find that it's a lot less fair and unnecessarily overwhelming when compared to regular DS2.

You'll be fine in DS2 with patience and basic observation skills, like "more enemies are waking up as I go near them, better not run wildly around this low level area while I fight". Scholar of the First Sin is basically just a remix, with the title referring to how the added DLC explains a lot more about the overarching story and the connection between the games. They fixed a bunch of things they couldn't do in the original, like having better lighting and more different enemies in the same areas. It's different but generally better, and it's the only version you can buy nowadays without jumping through hoops. I believe it's also the only one you can play online anymore. As for hexes, they are a high risk-high reward form of magic that require further focus on both intelligence and faith. In DS1 and 3 they're only variants of sorcery or miracles, but in DS2 they're a separate type with a full range of spells. Either type of magic is fun to play around with.
@markthesecond3380

I feel like saying that SotFS is just a remix and generally better might give a false impression about it. It is generally better and it is a remix, but it's also way harder and a lot less fair to new players. It's pretty clear that SotFS was intended to be a far more challenging version of DS2 so that DS2 vets could experience the learning curve all over again. I'm not sure it holds up as the best experience for a first time playthrough of DS2.

@@markthesecond3380 should I play SotFS if I haven't played DS2 but played a couple other Soulsborne games (Dark Souls, Dark Souls 3, Elden Ring)? I would assume that I know the fighting style but don't know the actual layout of Ds2. I have also heard that I should play mostly without locking on which might lead to different gameplay which would again mean that I should start with the easier version. then again Scholar has better performance so which one would you recommend. I don't think I have the time or money to buy vanilla first and then play Scholars
@markthesecond3380
@markthesecond3380 Жыл бұрын
@@revengance4149 Hmm, honestly, it's hard to say. I'll try to give you some of my thoughts to help you make a decision, but for full disclosure, I never beat SotFS. I beat original DS2 like 8 times before SotFS came out and when I got to SotFS, it felt like they made it more difficult while making it less fun. A lot of people love SotFS though, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. The reason you've probably heard to not lock on as much in DS2 is probably because it likes to throw groups of enemies at you more often. Being locked on isn't great when dealing with 4-6 guys at the same time. If you're not used to swarm management, DS2 can take some time to learn (and might feel unfair in some places). If that gives you pause, well SotFS throws even more enemies at you, which can be quite ridiculous at times. There's also some places where it feels like the SotFS is intentionally trying to trick players into messing up because it expects you to already know how certain areas work in original DS2. So it's trying to surprise you for the sake of being different. That being said, DS2 is arguably the easiest of FromSoft's games. If you're confident in your crowd management and really care about a strong challenge, then it might be better to jump to SotFS. It's still a FromSoft game though, so it's not going to be a walk in the park either way (especially the DLC). In my opinion, original DS2 feels like a better designed game overall, but SotFS does have some other objectively better aspects. For example, it is a noticeable visual upgrade over the original, torches have more use as a mechanic, and the SotFS servers are more active (if you care about online play). I think there's a few other QoL improvements, but they're relatively minor. I know this isn't a definitive answer, but I hope it at least gives you some idea of why you might pick one over the other. Whichever you pick, I hope it's the right one for you. I love DS2 and I want you to have a good time either way.

@@markthesecond3380 thanks. I have sumbled across a very popular overhaul mod called "seekers of flame" and the reviews on KZbin seems very positive as it fixed many issues with ds2 and allowes more freedom in the progression route. So I'll probably play with that for the best expierience and it only works with SotFS so I'll buy that. but thanks for the help I hope I don't suffer to much bs with this mod. I have no doubt that Ds2 despite it's many problems is a good game but when you can turn a 6 into a 8 it's obviously the right choice. from what I've seen ds2 feels like an unfinished game that could've been on par with ds 1 and 3 so mods are perfect for it as modders have clear problems they can fix to make the game better

I ended up playing hexes my first DS2 run, it was fun! I was in a similar situation. I wanted to try magic but couldn’t decide between a faith or intelligence build, so I went with both. I didn’t know hexes existed and just used both miracles and sorceries until I found some, and pretty much only used hexes afterwards. They’re dark elemental spells/miracles that scale with both faith and intelligence, so if you have a lot of both they’re pretty strong.

Having finally been able to watch the last few Dark Souls videos, and now you enjoying the lore has made me very happy. Your playthrough of DS1 was amazing through and through, and it sparks joy that you're now here for the lore as well. I firmly believe the souls series to have one of the more comprehensive lore behind the games and learning it all is a long journey, but well rewarding. I hope you have a lot of fun playing (and learning the lore of) the rest of the series. I recommend just playing DS2: Scholar of the First Sin. DS2 vanilla is basically the same but with less lore. Make sure to read up on adaptability and agility before you start a ds2 run, it helps enormously. Every type of magic is absolutely viable in DS2 btw, so use whatever you want :). Hexes is basically Dark Magic, which is honestly one of the easier/stronger types in the game, but it feels amazing to play. I hope we see more of these videos! Very enjoyable reaction. Piecing the lore together is such a fun part of these games, since so much is left up to interpretation and speculation. Miyazaki has mentioned that this is inspired by him reading English fantasy novels when he was younger, and because he didn't fully understand the language he filled in the gaps himself. When you eventually replay DS1 there's some other things you should try to do, besides finding Kaathe and choosing the Dark ending. The first is getting the Old Witch's Ring, either as a starting gift or by trading the Sunlight Maggot to Snuggly the crow. Another thing is to upgrade your Pyromancy Flame to +10 before you go to Blighttown. I won't spoil what happens when you do these things, I'll leave that for you to figure out, but I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised.

From what I've seen when it comes to DS2 it seems like Scholar looks a lot better visually and has some cool mechanics but adds a lot mobs and ganks enemies that make the early game really tough compared to the original version. Scholar just seems frustratingly tough for no reason. But people certainly like other aspects of it as well. I’m late to the party so I don’t expect this comment to be seen. But I just finished my first ever DS1 play through (oddly enough I finished DS3 and Elden Ring, but never DS1). I absolutely love your walkthrough of DS1! You picked it up so quickly and there were some amazing and funny moments along the way. One thing piqued my interest that you mentioned in both your last video (fighting Gwyn) and this one: You said Gwyn didn’t use lighting attacks during his fight and the piano music was so beautiful yet sad. In my opinion - the reason for this is because Gwyn, the most powerful God, is now a hollow version of himself. He’s prolonged his age of fire and stretched it so much, even using his soul as kindling. That would explain why (once you get the timing down) he is so easy to beat with parrying. It’s because his age has come to an end and it’s almost sad to see a great warrior at the end of his sanity. Also, if we are truly to succeed Gwyn as most of the NPCs state, this will also be our fate as we offer ourselves up as kindling. Reinforcing the idea of “is it best to link the fire”. I really enjoyed your walkthrough and CANNOT wait for DS3!!!!!!

You shared your own thoughts up front, you pause throughout the video to reflect and react, you interrupt and add your own stuff enough that your video is in no way a substitution for someone who hasn't seen the original... It's good. If every "youtuber reacts" video was done like this, I think there would be a lot less controversy about the subject. 💙

to meet Qaathe, you can talk to Frampt for the first half of the game until Ornstein and Smough, but *dont* place the lord vessel with him back at Firelink, then go thru New Londo and beat the Four Kings (after Sif boss of course) and this will unlock Qaathe at the Abyss bonfire as an alternate lord vessel placement option. in the DLC, Chester told you of a "toothy serpent" that fooled Olacile into waking up Manus, that brought the Abyss upon the world, challenging the rule of Fire with dark. That was Qaathe. - - - - - (mild spoils ahead) You can get an alternate Sif cutscene however, if placing the vessel with Frampt and you head to the DLC early, you can meet and save Sif in the past in DLC before fighting him in the main game. just one of the many easter eggs in this game. 😮
@revengance4149
@revengance4149 Жыл бұрын
the thing with that is that you cannot get both the unique Sif cutscene and the Kaathe dialogue in the same playthrough since you need to have placed to Lordvessel to get to the DLC and fight Sif after the DLC but that means that by the time you get to the four Kings you will have already placed the Lordvessel meaning that Kaathe won't be there. I was at this crossroad a few days ago in my 2nd playthrough but decided that the Darkwrath covenant achievement was more important than a unique Cutscene. Kinda goes to show that not only the world but also the order in which you go is interconnected leading to slightly different expieriences depending on your choices.

@@revengance4149 yeh, the whole thing revolves on needing Sifs ring to even fight the Four Kings 😭🐶 I'm currently halfway thru an SL1 challenge run and on the same dilemma 😅 I thought of doing the Dark Wraith Covenant cuz it would be fun, maybe I'll make a save file and undo my progress and continue to the DLC instead for the cutscene later. I'm always delaying that fight as long as possible on all my playthrus 🥹

@@leftyjackTTV sorry this got so long I talk about a lot of different stuff the way I see it is you don't need to do everything in 1 playthrough and Ds1 is the kind of game where people who played it since 2011 have 900+ hours on it. on my first Playthrough a few months ago I missed the painted world of ariames, the Gwyndolin fight and basically everything to do with breaking the illusion, the great hollow and ash lake (got to great hollow thought I'll return later and forgot about it), the kaathe interaction, the dlc, basically all questlines and 6 covenants. and currently Im still missing the dlc (yes I know we are talking about the dlc but I haven't played it yet myself :p ) also all questlines which I don't think I'll do on this one probably gonna be 1-2 questlines a plathrough, and two covenants. basically there's a lot of content for a game that takes 20 hours to complete. I only came to Ds1 after being introduced to the souls games by Elden Ring so there's no rush for me. I also think that the whole Kaathe Sif situation is cool and I don't want to criticise it. when writing the op comment I only realized how interconnected not just the world but the story of Ds1 is and the way it tells it. also I love so many thinks about the story in these games, and the tale of Artorias and Sif is tragic indeed, but I don't feel guilty. the way I see it is that by making us kill Sif the game tells us this tragedy. its such a cool way of storytelling not just item descriptions not even just enviromental storytelling or Dialogue but the boss fights themselves tell Miyasakis story. other great examples are the old demon King in ds3 surrounded by the corpses of his species and putting up a final fight and releasing an explosion only to remain weakened and trying to ward you of with his last bit of strength not unlike Sif really, or the Namless King hesitating to kill his dragon (that may or may not be Ornstein but either way is his friend and companion). Ornstein paying respect to Smough before absorbing his power while Smough crushes Ornstein like a bug without any respect despite the fact that he wanted to be one of the knights himself and maybe even saw Ornstein as an idol once.

I'm currently making my way through DS2: SotFS (never played plain vanilla DS2), and whatever anyone else says here about difficult enemy placements, etc., it is well within your abilities as a player (having watched your other playthroughs). The game definitely rewards patience rather than trying to sprint ahead through areas, but that's never been an issue for you. So far, I've definitely been enjoying it overall FWIW.

In DS2 there are 4 varieties of magic (the other games only include 3). Pyromancy is mostly fire and scales by leveling up your pyromancer hand. Sorcery is magic that scales with intelligence. Miracles are mostly lightning and support spells, and they scale with faith. Finally, Hexes are a dark form of magic that scale with both int and faith. They are the most powerful, from what I hear.

Scholar of the First Sin Edition is probably best for DS2, I feel most people consider it to be the definitive version of the game and it comes with all the DLC and extra lore stuff in the base game.

Scholar of the First Sin is the only one you need. It's like the Lord of the Rings extended editions compared to the base editions. The fandom consider it divisive, but you should still try it; some of us love it. If it ends up not being for you that's totally cool, but you should still try it out first! : )

You're quicker on picking up on a lot of this stuff than I am apparently lol I've watched Vaati's videos before and still have a hard time wrapping my head around DS lore and its reasons, even some of the stuff he explains outright. Which is weird because I can understand and comprehend Bloodborne's lore and story no problem. Have a good day

Do a faith/hex build for DS2. By leveling faith and intelligence together hex spells will do solid damage, and faith will allow for a ton of useful utility spells that add flavor to the game. 100% play SoTFS instead of the original. It is a massive improvement. I'm glad you're not skipping 2, as it is loved and hated by many for good reason. It is much more of an rpg, with more of everything. Basically a love letter to the first. The only true criticisms are its obscure I frame connection to the adaptability stat, multiplayer connectivity being tied to your total soul collection aka soul memory, and the less consistent vistas that reveal other parts of the game. These few things aside, all other complaints fail to be substantiated upon further understanding. It's the only game of the three I can go back to and enjoy no matter what. Anyway glad you're enjoying this, as you have the best system for exploration I have seen personally aside from myself. Can't wait for DS2 😊

Correction, the undead curse was not a natural product of the first flame dying out. It was a direct result of Gwyn sacrificing himself to the first flame. THAT is what perma-fucked the world forever. Because of Gwyn, in his arrogance and hubris, wanted to prolong his age of fire.
