I can vouch for this video. Been in the gov space for over 10 years. Have a public trust clearance, no certs. Started as a helpdesk rep, picked up extra Drupal development work from an internal project, and parlayed that into full-stack development. While on the job I used tuition reimbursement to finish my B.S. and went from a 40k helpdesk to a 60k full-stack dev role, 6 mo later to a 75k gig and the momentum hasn't stopped. Now I earn over 6 figures as a Sr Dev.

I'm in the government. I'm an IT manager, I do interviews and grade resumes. I worked in the private sector for 22 years and the government for 12 years. The government is much more forgiving than the private sector regarding your skills. Several things will get you into government IT quickly. There is a need for people with experience in cloud technology, cybersecurity, and database administration. There is a sure way you have to answer the question that is the key for your application to get pass the selection process. You can have all the experience in the world, but if your resume does not reflect the government's way, your resume will not get selected to advance to the new step in the process.

Getting into Government IT is almost exclusively through contracting. So your example is not really relevant to the conversation. Trying to get on as a direct Gov hire is different. In my 15 year gov contracting career I’ve never seen any of the positions I hold offered as a direct gov employee. So if you are not in a direct it position, a hiring manager for a direct it position then reserve your comment until you become better informed. Ad a side note the conversation also is context to getting a IT job In the private sector especially a FAANG type job which is much more difficult.

Symone I Have a bachelor degree in Sociology and just completed the Google Cybersecurity certification program back in June which consisted of 8 courses. I'm preparing to take the CompTia security + exam in September. Will having all three credentials help me land a cybersecurity job with us government because seems like currently just having the degree in sociology and the Google cert I'm still having a difficult time landing my first cybersecurity job.
