It's getting rarer with the cost of development to see buildings that still work so well in the surrounding context! Great content and editing.

@@Archimarathon It’s my favourite so far. I think it was brilliant how you put a lot of emphasis on the surrounding context and how they influence the detail of the house. Not enough new developments in Brighton so this as you pointed out. So true about houses in Europe! It’s just part of everyday life here but Slate house is a much better example everything a design should consider. Well done again.

It's true that apartment buildings make sense to me as a European (as do toilets next to front doors because that's *literally* every Dutch house since they started building indoor toilets), but calling a three-bedroom apartment 'downsizing' did not! lol. It started to make more sense when all the other apartments turned out to be smaller! The access to outdoor green spaces is the big thing missing from most apartments, and something that would keep me from moving into one, so it definitely seems like this is something the world needs more of. Especially if the apartments are really well soundproofed :).
@Archimarathon3 жыл бұрын
My parents recently downsized too but yeah their apartment is huge compared to most others. They don’t miss their old house where they have spent the longest at any point in their lives.

When i'm watching your videos, i'm thinking; yes there are bunch of architects out of there who they are real and good one which they don't have starchitect's illisions. I like your thinking process on making projects and your analizing way of the other architects jobs, both of you. @@Archimarathon -- I read a rumor once that initially the British colonizers of Australia kept placing large windows on the south side. If it were true it's a perfect illustration that people are creatures of habit rather than reason.

I live in Brighton so watching this gives me hope of a white box free future. Also, Rob mills needs to be banned from the area. That monstrosity on church st makes me angry every time I pass it. They didn’t film it but there’s two beautiful old heritage castle like houses right next to it and it looks so jarring. Why is it legal to do this...
@Archimarathon3 жыл бұрын
I do like a good white box if it’s good but most of the Brighton ones seems to be very large and scale seems to be a problem, even the single houses ones are gigantic. There was an old single storey modernist home we walked past on Male Street that seemed elegant and subtle. But yeah I guess money talks, especially in a place like Brighton. It’s great that this developer is trying to break the trend.
@Dwhpshaz3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree - did not mean to generalise all the white boxes out there haha also I recognise that it’s all subjective anyways as obviously there are clients out there who like this sort of style. So scale and respect for the context really does seem to be the issue. Anyways I love the content from this channel! Amazing videos.

Thanks. Please share the love. Yes things don’t have to be homogeneous but yes scale and “conversation” is the issue

Beautiful work but please, subvert the dominant new world paradigm of 'forever home' (and therefore great design) as only belonging to the property owning class only. European nations manage that. So its time we got with the program!
@Archimarathon3 жыл бұрын
It’s a political issue. We need good housing policies. For that we need to vote in good politicians.
@angelaballard39293 жыл бұрын
@@Archimarathon no not necessarily entirely. Build to Rent (BTR) as an asset management model changes the paradigm away from the build crap for investor capital gain (at the homelife expense of people who rent) to a focus on quality build and community driven by the developer.
@Archimarathon3 жыл бұрын
Property owning class is still part of the sustainability and densification equation too. This is Brighton and Andrew was working within the constraints set by the developer for this project.
