This is one of the best prog metal songs ever written and performed. With a song like this, representing a classical ballad from times past with distinctive chapters, the numerous sections that don't relate to one another kind of make sense. There is a supposition that you are familiar with Homer's Odyssey, as the lyrics within the song follow the tale. The various sections of the song representing the diverse challenges Odysseus faced while at sea, and finally when he returned home. The treacherous seas, the deadly cyclops, the sinister sirens, the seductive sorceress, and a backstabbing royal court, etc...each has its own unique portrayal.

Actually theres some repetition in the song but its more subtle like in classical music. The themes or melodies are repeated in different ways. Its really difficult to detect those details on a first listen. The music fits a lot with the epic greek poem written by Homer, so I feel that the constant shifting and moving forward with different movements is quiet adequate.

@@captainmorgan1978 I think of it as "chapters" where each chapter is its own 4-5 minute song. In each of those songs, you have your chorus, melodies and hooks. The smaller subtleties take place throughout the song. As a guitarist, the first one I noticed was Romeo's... ummm... slower, "flowing" guitar riffs you hear at the start, that recur throughout the entire song. Russel changing his vocals based on the characters also help that lack of a hook. When I listen to his singing, I forget that there's little repetition in the song!

Also, I think the ending was exactly what it needed to be. There’s the exciting conclusion when Ulysses reveals his identity and takes out his enemies, then the quiet ending, almost an epilogue, that represents Ulysses having truly returned home and found peace. Musically, it returns to the first section of the song after the overture. If you’re not familiar with the original story, I would recommend reading it then revisiting the song. I’ve found that it helps a lot in seeing the structure of the song. It’s an amazing song even if people have never heard of the original story, but I think that a good understanding of the structure Homer used in “The Odyssey” significantly enhances the experience of listening to the song.

I own the hard disc of this album, the track listing on the back lays this song out in defined sections. "The Odyssey" "Part I - Odysseus' Theme / Overture" "Part II - Journey to Ithaca" "Part III - The Eye" "Part IV - Circe (Daughter of the Sun)" "Part V - Sirens" "Part VI - Scylla and Charybdis a) Gulf of Doom b) Drifting Home" "Part VII - The Fate of the Suitors / Champion of Ithaca" If you know the story of Homer's The Iliad, a story of Odysseus during the Greek and Trojan war, the song follows the story quite accurately. You can pick up where each part changes with the timing changes. Part I and II are basically an into to the song and the main character, Odysseus. The story begin after the war, on their journey back home to Ithaca. Part III - The first thing they run into is a Cyclops on an island that they have to blind with a giant spear to escape after getting it drunk on their wine. Part IV - They find another island full of beautiful woman and a sorceress who changes all the man into animals except Odysseus who is immune to her spell. She is so impressed with him she changes all his men back into....men and lets them go. Before they leave she warns them of the Sirens... Part V - The Sirens! These are mythical beings who sing soothing songs (essentially) to lure you close to danger hoping that you will wreck your boat and die. Bunch of real A-holes! Odysseus was warned... he avoids the temptation. Part VI (a and b) is all instrumental and paints a perfect picture in your mind of whats happening in the story through the music. Starts at (21:35) in your video. Scylla is a 6 headed serpent beast who lived on some rocks near a narrow straight. Boats entering fell victim and all who entered were killed. In the music you can hear some sharp raises of notes over and over (around 22:05 through 22:30), this to me is them fighting the beast. Charybdis is a giant whirpool on the other side of the narrow straight, to avoid it you must get close to Scylla, after fighting with Scylla they choose the whirpool, Charybdis, as a better option which they encounter around (23:12) when those very ominous horns come in. (23:24 through 23:50) in your video, not the actual track time on the song itself... is them maneuvering through Charybdis. Around (23:55) you get these "questioning" sounding horns... Are they alright? You dont know yet! (24:13) Harp comes in! Sad and somber music turns into bright and uplifting! They're OK. the story continues. Part VII - They make it back to Ithaca, they've been gone for 20 years. Everyone thinks Odysseus is dead (he was the King or whatever). The men of the city want his Queen to remarry to replace the assumed dead Odysseus. She makes a deal that the first man who can string Odysseus' bow and shoot an arrow through a set of rings can be her new suitor.... no one can do it. Odysseus shows up, he looks like a beggar from having a really hard last 20 years. Slaps together the bow and aces the ring test. Regains his throne. This is The Iliad is a nut shell.... I understand your feedback about not enough repetition in the song..... but it wasn't designed to have repetition. Its telling a story, there is a beginning a middle and an end. Check out the first long epic Symphony X did in the album: The Divine Wings of Tragedy. The song is by the same title. Its just as awesome, not much repetition, totally different story!

Michael Romeo composes the symphonic sections of the song as well as playing guitar and singing backup. That guy wins major kudos for taking all of that on as well as being one of the best guitarists out there. Basically, every member of the band acts as backup vocals at some point too. Russel Allen, I heard, has one of the largest vocal ranges in the industry. I appreciated LaBrie for the early DT works, but, I almost hate to say that he sounds "weak" in the later DT songs. Russel though, manages to get those low notes, growl almost, and then transition straight up to the highest range of his vocals... all in one song. The guy's a beast!! (But then again, I also enjoy Geddy Lee's voice, so what DO I know :p)

To answer you last question. I listened to a lot of DT as well as SX in my life. I love both but for some reasons I enjoy SX more. There is period in my life where I used to not listen to DT for a while, but I have always kept listening to SX from time to time. I think i like more Russel signing and voice tone than Labries signing. Also, as a whole, SX songs are more focused while DT have more songs that go everywhere and feels, in my opinion, like they were craft rapidly from couple jam sessions. There is couple songs from DT that I would just skip and it is never the case with SX. But, in the end I think that both DT and SX fans know about both bands and would listen to them a different degree; one would like more DT and the other would like more SX.

I disagree somewhat with the criticism of a lack of repetition. It’s “progressive” metal, so, by definition, repetition should be kept to a minimum. However, there actually is quite a bit of repetition in a sense. Each section builds on the previous section, and retains something of that previous section, so there is both change and a consistent thread that goes through the entire song. Also, don’t forget about the importance of the first part, “Odysseus' Theme / Overture,” which gives a preview of each of the subsequent sections, thereby providing another connection point. Then, of course, the end of the song brings it all back to the starting point, tying it all together very nicely. That’s perfect for telling the story. Ulysses leaves Ithaca, participates in the war, has a variety of adventures during the long voyage home (and the quest is always to return home), then returns everything to its proper state when he finally arrives home. He finds that his wife (who is the essence of the “home” he struggled to return to) had remained faithful and hadn’t given up the belief that he would return. The story is a journey from the order and stability of home, through a state of chaos, then back to order and stability. If there were more prominent repetition, such as a recurring chorus, the sense of being on that journey would have been disrupted at the very least, and possibly lost. Each section of the song is great, but to get the intended effect of the song, the entire song has to be listened to in one sitting. The same can be said about a lot of Dream Theater’s longer pieces, but it’s especially important for this song, since the song is an interpretation of a piece of literature that follows a specific pattern that is vital to the meaning of the narrative.

Thanks for the explanation. If you watched my other videos this is why I think it is a terrible suggestion to give new listeners to a band a LONG or EPIC song by a band. I HATE it when people keep suggesting Octavarium to new people being introduced to DT...And this song is exactly the reason why. On a first time listen no one can grasp all that is going on or get the understanding, especially if it is replaying themes from other songs or ideas because the whole album is a concept...etc...I refuse to do long/epic songs with these new bands I am listening to. Cheers!

@@captainmorgan1978 I think that's one of the challenges of doing reaction videos. There are a lot of songs, even relatively short ones, that require the listener to have prior knowledge or experience to really appreciate the song. In the case of "The Odyssey," you have both the literary connection and the fact that the song is significantly more complex (and longer, of course) than what most people listen to. In my experience, most people don't really know how to listen to music effectively (or that there even IS a way to listen to music effectively). For most people, it's an almost exclusively passive experience. That's not a problem with the typical generic I-V-vi-IV pop song and its three-and-a-half minutes of bland lyrics. There's no need to try getting past the surface, since, for the most part, there isn't anything but the surface. And that's fine. I have nothing against simple, casual entertainment. (Hey, I like movies that are mostly just car chases and things blowing up every so often. And if there are zombies or vikings involved in the car chases and explosions, a bit more than every so often.) Just like you can't expect somebody who can barely do basic arithmetic to understand calculus, you can't expect someone who only listens to Taylor Swift, Drake, or Nirvana to have even the faintest clue about what's going on they first time he or she hears something like "Octavarium." The more complex/sophisticated the music, the more likely it is to have a lot of prerequisites. That's not always the case, of course, particularly with lyrics. The content of the typical rap/hip hop "song" doesn't resonate with me at all, for example, so even if it were converted to actual singing with an epic neoclassical composition, it still wouldn't mean that much to me. For the most part, though, the best music demands effort from the listener, just like the best literature demands effort from the reader. That's part of why I'm okay with people who do reaction videos doing some preliminary research, etc., on the song, band, etc. I don't view it as "cheating" or anything like that. The first listen through the song is still the first listen through the song. Even with some preliminary research, reacting to a new song in an interesting and relevant manner can be pretty challenging. (Based on the handful of your videos that I've watched so far, I think you do a great job of it. One of the added benefits of your videos is when you do things like, for example, pointing out/talking about transitions. That helps people learn how to listen to music more effectively.) Anyway, keep up the good work! I'm looking forward to future videos and also to going through past videos.

@@reedpeterson6512 yes, I totally agree with what you said. For me personally, I don't have enough time to research beforehand. Even with DT songs, I like the fact that many of the songs don't sit perfectly with me at first listen and realize later that some of the least liked songs originally have become some of my favorites later. I didn't dislike the odyssey just didn't connect as much for many of the reasons you said above... That's OK, it may become one of my favorites later...i like that progress. 😊 Cheers! It really helps if you know the story and characters of the Odyssey going into it. You have to listen several times to catch the repetitions and themes. Also the section at the beginning is repeated right at the end to different effect. Overall good review, although Id prefer if you listen to the lyrics as the story is told through lyric and you might catch the story. The ending ends how the poem ends. You cant change the ending to be grand when the whole song directly follows the Odyssey. Check out the movie the odyssey and then rewatch this :)

Great work man, not everyone has what it takes to take this one. But on top of the gorgeous transitions, you have to remember that Symphony X is not Dream Theater, they are actually telling the story of the odyssey. So you gotta factor in the lyrics and the music and piece together what part of the story this piece is in any particular moment. Also, at the end, when Odysseus gets to Ithaca (In the epic poem The Odyssey), this song gives you the quote and quote hook of the similar part that you are asking for.... and it's epic, because that's when Odysseus gets home..... I mean. I'd love to see Dream Theater producing at this level. I recommend you the book, bot the movie will do, though the 3 hours for the epic poem will do!

This long song has a concept behind it. It is telling a story inspired by the Odyssey and consequently has kind of "chapters" in the way the song could be divided. This is why I can do with all the melody and theme changes for this song. However I get what you say when prog songs dont have something to glue its parts. I used to listen to lot of prog bands in my twenties that I would later call "zap bands"; because the songs felt like at each transtion i was skipping to another song, zapping music like if i were zapping on the TV. Technically great, but in the end found that the songs were not memorable and enjoyable. DT did some zapping too and i would say that i liked their last album for being more focused songwriting wise. I had'nt bought a DT album since Octavarium. And I should mention that I was disapointed with Systematic Chaos and also half of Octavarium. But.. there is still some bands out here that have lots of changes in their songs, does not repeat a melody, does not repeat a riff, and still manage to be cohesive thematically. So, I will push again for you to react to Spinning by Spiral Architect, which fits the above description.

Yea I can understand. If you listen to my reaction to the new DT album you can hear my overall thoughts as it is concerned. Not every album can be incredible, or songs within albums. As stated in other DT reactions, I pretty much like all DT stuff, but of course there are levels of which I like their stuff. IN the DT context I don't think they have written a BAD song (save The Astonishing), but they have written songs that were not as good as others in my opinion. So, that being said I think, of course, Images and Words is my favorite overall album. I think the older DT written stuff is more my style and preference, which is why I think I like SymX stuff so far as well. And, even on the newer albums, At Wits End and Barstool Warrior are my favorite which sounds more like older style DT. :)

@@captainmorgan1978 Nice! I know that I have suggested the song *Spinning* lastly, but it is a short and very fast song. After a relistening of the album, I'm more confident that the song *Insect* will be more appropriate for a reaction. It is a little bit longer, has more tempo variation and showcase the band ability more. I warn you tho. Spiral is not your typical prog stuff. It took me many and many listens to recognize the melodies and riffs by heart because it is very complex stuff. However it had the beauty that my perception of the album was changing at each listens. For example on first listens i found that the signing was kind of off. Now, I would say that the singning could not have fit better. Can't wait to see if you like this stuff! Cheers!

This song has a very broad overture that's touched upon through each song in different ways. Symphony X is definitely in my top 5 favorite bands and this song is one of the all time greats. I've been a Dream Theater fan for much longer, first hearing Pull Me Under on our local rock radio station around 93. Dream Theater will always be my favorite band but I would actually like to see you react to Michael Romeo's newest solo album War Of The World's Pt 1. Hey Captain Morgan that wasn't bad at all. You were jamming and having fun and that's not easy. I'm a classical piano guy from way back but I've also dabbled in guitar and drums. I practiced to Petrucci's Rock Discipline book for hours on end only to realize I could play scales and such but was severely lacking in rhythm guitar lol. Then just last year I decided I was going to learn drums so I bought a decent electric kit and practiced hard. I had an actual teacher and I got as far as playing a triple roll and different paradiddles smoothly but the double bass was my enemy. I was able to achieve my main goal which was to play Stand By Him by Ghost in its entirety. Just a super easy fun song to play. 🤘

I like both SX and Dream Theater. I also enjoy both singers but I believe Russell Allen has the edge. His ability to change his vocal style to suit the music is what sets him apart in my opinion. He can be smooth and clean in a more ballad style or aggressive with some smoke in his vocals when the music gets heavier. If you are looking for more SX to critique, I recommend the entire V album. I believe this is their best overall effort as a symphonic metal band. Composition/writing is very strong on this and Russell Allen is just mind blowing vocally. Their later releases get heavier and are not as melodic (to me).

Now you need to check out some of their newer stuff and some of their older stuff, for new stuff I would suggest Iconoclast, When all is lost or Legend. For older stuff listen to either Damnation Game or The Accolade. Regardless listen to more SX, Michael romeo and John Petrucci are my two favorite guitarists with Nuno Bettencourt, Zakk Wylde and Rich Henshall following.

So this is kinda a long read but explains the story of the song. Obviously it is based on Homers Epic The Odyssey but the music and themes actually follow the story as well as well as the lyrics, another reason why there isn't a lot of repetition is because its like the journey that Odysseus takes, not a lot of repetition in the book. "Part 1 - Odysseus Theme / Overture It is a good idea for any musical to open and close with an overture, we call that continuity. Symphony X evidently prescribes to this logic as well. Part 2 - Journey to Ithaca The primary objective or our protagonist is to return home to his wife and child. The opening lyrics to Symphony X’s “The Odyssey” covers this aptly; “To the one that I love, my journey has begun. When our eyes meet once more there will be peace. The taste of your lips the warmth of your touch, Again, forever, two souls as one. Seems like forever that my eyes have been denied. Home - I'm dreaming of the home. I've been twenty years away from all I ever knew, To return would make my dream come true.” The next several parts depict the many horrors Odysseus and his crew face. Part 3 - The Eye Landing on an island Odysseus and his men must escape a Cyclops who just so happens to be the son of Poseidon, whom as you recall is unhappy with the Greek heroes. “A mountainous black - engulfed in a shadow, A bone-chilling growl and an Eye of Hate, A ghastly fate - held prisoner by the Eye.” Part 4 - Circe Circe is a goddess and a witch who uses polymorph magic to transform many of Odysseus crew into animals. “Stay - like those before, I condemn you all - from walk to crawl, ...metamorphasized.” Part 5 - Sirens Sirens are rather famous mythological monsters that are half bird half human female, who would plague sailors with their sweet song and lure them into the waters where they would drown. Odysseus’ crew needed someone to watch and guide them through the storm while being bombarded by the sirens. Their solution was to tie Odysseus to the mast and have their king do his best to guide them, while being tormented by the sirens, while the rest of the men row. Symphony X’s cover art for the album depicts this moment. “Tied steadfast to the mast, Tragedy awaits me. I'm falling victim, Betrayed by the sea.” Part 6 - Scylla and Charybdis Scylla is a multi-headed sea monster that dwells in the rocky ridges of a pass and Charybdis is another sea monster typically rationalised as a whirlpool. The term “Between Scylla and Charybdis” is an idiom that basically means caught between two dangers or imply an impossible choice between two terrible options. Odysseus is forced to sail between the two; this spells the end for the remainder of Odysseus’ crew as he is the sole survivor of this nightmare. Wisely, I think, Symphony X depicts this moment from “The Odyssey” as an intense instrumental. What is there to say really? Part 7 - The Fate of the Suitors / Champion of Ithaca Twenty years is a long time to be away from home and in his absence Penelope, queen of Ithaca, is broached by many suitors. After twenty years they demand she choose one of them so she devises a test. She will marry the man who can string a bow and shoot an arrow through the rings of twelve axe heads all of which are planted on the ground in a singular line; but when the suitor’s attempt the test they all fail, none among them can string the bow let alone shoot an arrow from it. Then a withered and ruined homeless man comes forward and asks for the chance to prove himself in this test. “A contest of valor, To pierce the twelve rings, In a single arrow's flight, Yet, not a one can string the bow.” There is a technique to stringing a bow. The string cannot be stretched very far but the wood of the bow can bend. The trick is to use your leg as a brace and bend the bow around your leg so the string can reach the second end of the weapon. This withered and ruined homeless man uses this technique and strings the bow with ease. He then proceeds to shot an arrow through the twelve axe heads. Then the illusion fades and all in the hall know Odysseus has returned. “My veil of silence lifted, All is revealed, Revenge burns in my heart, Thrashing and slashing down all my foes...to claim the throne.” This is my favorite moment in the book “The Odyssey.” In the beginning of the novel, worn out Odysseus is thought to be some meek man and when his hosts tease him he speaks up and proves he is no mere beggar by throwing a discus a great distance and with that everyone is convinced that he must be the stuff of kings, for only a great man could throw a discus so well. In the end of the story Odysseus performs the feat of stringing a bow and firing it perfectly. In ancient Greek culture a good man was much more than good natured, a good man needed to be capable. A great man, if he were great, would learn all that he could and as such was expected to be able to fight with sword and spear, wrestle, box, till a garden, tend a field, read and write, ride a horse, drive a chariot, forge weapons, build a house, throw a javelin and shot-put. A great man is expected to be able to throw a discus. A great man is expected to be able to string a bow. Among the suitors none could even string the bow, thus disqualifying them as good men. This concept was revived in the renaissance, you might recall the term “a renaissance man” as someone who was cultured and capable in all things. The idea is a good man would not leave things alone, he would learn all that there was to know. I like the idea of constantly learning and improving, and while we live in an age of information so huge in volume that knowing all things by all people is impossible, I still believe the endeavour to try is truly noble, and I think, perhaps, you disqualify yourself as a great man the minute you stop learning. That is the symbolism behind “none can string the bow.” “Triumphant - Champion of Ithaca.” After everything Odysseus has been through it is such a satisfying ending for him to return home to his faithful wife, his son, and his kingdom, and Symphony X invokes the feelings I have always held for this story’s heroic and happy end in a very powerful way. These progressive metal champions have created a fanfare worthy of Odysseus, the Champion of Ithaca, and a song worthy of the epic. - King of Braves" And boom there you go. Cheers mate!

I do like both Dream Theater and Symphony X alot. I think the reaction channel you're talking about iscalled Lost in Vegas. While I agree with your view that there needs to be a recurring musical theme or repetition and I do think you'll find it in the song there's a musical phrase that repeats that feels like a call to adventure. I think you can spot it at 12:12 in the song and then, right after even the vocals part does it too when Russell says the lyrics, "We sit adrift on the open sea." The song is more like a score for their version of the epic poem. They borrow a lot of theatrical music conventions to emphasize the story. The climax of the poem around the lyrics that start around 19:40 have a power metal vibe which makes sense to me. I really like these long songs because its essentially a story and the music enhances that experience so well. Like Octavarium and pretty much the whole Metropolis album. You might like Nightwish btw. Check them out. They have long songs as well but I'm not sure that they'd be considered Prog. but it does border on it if it isn't there.
