Damn right they are, Ice! I have met a lot of Dream Theater fans who said that they've listened to Symphony X but they don't think they are as good because they aren't "prog enough". Michael Romeo has stated in interviews that he doesn't understand why they are compared to Dream Theater so often because they have more of a power metal sound with classical elements than prog elements. That's a fair description. Then again, a lot DT fans I've met love SX. Personally, I can listen to SX more often and longer than DT. Love both bands, but SX wins out for me.

Symphony X's vocalist Russell Allen is one of the best in the rock/metal industry. I probably wouldn't had picked this song to start you off with this band, but it isn't a bad choice per se. I would've picked Set the World on Fire (The Lie of Lies), Serpent's Kiss, The End of Innocence, or Kiss of Fire.

Symphony X is definitely a prog band that keeps the technicality high but still values accessibility, a sub-genre people often call Classic Prog Metal, clean singing with a large focus on melodies and nice groovy riffs. For a reference you will remember, these guys are in the same school as Dream Theater and a few steps away from Blind Guardian. I often suggest these guys to new listeners without a second thought as by and large they have a lot of flow in their tracks, though that's not always the case, as you found in this track.

There's no best way. If a song has a groove that you can bob your head to on a first listen and keep it that way the entire time you might dig it, but it could also get boring really quick. When you hear a prog band and you know they'll mix riff grooves and then take the song to a different direction don't complain that you couldn't maintain the head bob, try to appreciate the change in the tune. If you were at a Dream Theater or Sym X show you would see a mass of fans grooving to each part of the song and switch along with the band everywhere they go - it's a good mix of common parts and adventurous detours.

Also, to anyone paying attention, the chorus tempo is very close to the original tempo in double time and the backing riffs sound similar to the ones in the verse if not being entirely the same thing. It seems they had cohesion in mind, and although adding a breakdown in an odd time signature, kept the underlying riffs the same and just used a different facet of the same groove for the chorus. This is why musicians love this stuff

I salute you guys for giving Prog Rock/Metal a fair shake. You are 100% correct that prog music is a bit jarring and disorienting compared to traditional pop music. I would say prog is more widely geared towards, and largely more appreciated by musicians. It's created by musicians for musicians. I look at prog like a puzzle... At first, it's so hard to figure out what is happening (especially with the rhythm or the groove). But the fun part of it is when you start to study and unlock the secrets of the song. Understanding the construction behind the time signatures, the keys or modes of the composition, which often times are meticulously tweaked to fit the themes of the song or album. Once you start to figure out not only how the song is composed, but why it was composed that way, you start to solve the puzzle behind it. At that point you almost get a feeling of "I know something you don't know". This level of craftsmanship in music composition is what makes the legendary prog bands legendary. They have mastered the art of not just making a catchy tune or writing catchy lyrics; but instead, how to create a musical journey that has many secrets to unlock. Everyone's musical journey is different, especially with prog. I really hope you guys continue to do more songs from this genre. My best advise is to really pick every piece of it apart. With good prog bands, every aspect of the song is deliberate. Cheers as always, and happy reacting!

Symphony X is such a technical masterpiece. Not only are the Riffs very complex, but the timing changes are crazy. The feeling of the music is almost to a level that you can almost feel what's going on in the story. Not too many bands do this, but when you can feel the tide of battle change or the hero has fear wash over him, then its a special kind of music. I love this. One of my all time favorite bands for sure, watched them do all 24 min of the Odyssey live and played it perfect. Almost everything they write is a story or a classic novel. To me its like a movie in the form of music

Excited for this one. Never got much into Symphony X, but didn't dislike them when I initially heard some of their songs. Their vocalist also sings in Ayreon who I love - which you all should totally check out. Hard to pick a specific request from them since their whole catalog is a story-based concept, and each album is basically a concept album. But Age of Shadows would probably be a decent place to start... Or Everybody Dies would be good (it is more "radio friendly"). Also Nightwish - Ghost Love Score

Age of Shadows is approachable. Best overview of what Ayreon is about would probably be The Day That the World Breaks Down - it has everything Ayreon has to offer but it might be too much for newcomers, given the length and all. For me the fun thing about prog is figuring out the weird time changes and by when I know them and can sing along to them I really feel a sense of accomplishment. I know that's not the point of music for a lot of people, they just wanna jam. But for me that's the fun of prog. When I can sing along with the changes in a Dream Theater song I feel so cool. I like the challenge, and that's why I like prog. It's gotten to the point when I hear song without odd times it feels kind of odd. Love the video.

I love how you guys can objectively appreciate music, even if you don’t personally like it. I think it would be good to acknowledge that your format isn’t really ideal for progressive metal in some ways. One of the best things about the genre is you hear so many new things with each listen of a given song. Also, when you know the transitions are coming, it’s much less jarring. Have you ever noticed that some 3-4 minute songs with an amazing groove or beat that you absolutely loved the first few times you heard them kind of get old fast? It’s like candy. “It’s so good, it’s so good, it’s so good...ugh, I’m sick of it.” Prog gives you more flavor and more to chew on with each song.

Prog is not the thing you get right on the first listen due to complexity. However, that complexity lower a littele bit when you get use to the style. I also think that the ones who like prog, like it because each listen uncover something else. The more you assimilate the whole thing, the more your perspective of the song/band change. This is a rewarding discovery. The entertainment value last longer than an easy listening song that you can assimilate on the first listen. Even some pop song are so formulaic that even on first listen you can apprehend without surprise how and when the bridges and chorus will happen. So low complexity enables instant catching and appreciation but sometimes it doesn't last. On the other hand complex stuff you can't get into in the first listen but further listening session uncover new perspective and make the appreciation have a lasting effect.

They've joked in the past that if you have listen to a song 100 times in order to appreciate it (obviously exaggeration), then it's not a good song. They missed the point, and didn't understand what people were trying to say. You said it really well here. Prog isn't easy to get into. But once that door is opened, it's so tough to come back out. It's such a rewarding experience, I've heard songs so many times but still find myself finding new things to appreciate about them. I love it.

In December 2002, I rode with (annoying) relative strangers hundreds of miles and several hours, to get down to SF to see Blind Guardian live. I was super stoked to see them, so much so that I put up with all the BS of the trip itself. When we FINALLY found the dive bar out on the warf where the show was, we got in line, and I was still stoked. Until someone in line pointed out that BG's bus broke down in Portland, and they had to cancel. I was heartbroken, and super bummed. Symphony X, who I hadn't really listened to, wound up being the headliner, and even though I didn't enjoy the show much because I wanted to see BG, they still impressed me enough that I bought this album. The singer really reminds me of the singer of Kansas. I wound up seeing them one more time live at the first ever Gigantour, and they killed it again. This is a great song, glad you guys gave them a listen.

I have this video a thumbs up only because George was spot on with his reaction. Everything he said about this song is so true. Overpowering guitars to cracking up during the key-tar solo. But seriously every point he made was exactly how I was feeling. Every time they stopped the video both of them made great points but I just felt exactly the same way George did. Free thinking on the same level. Usually I feel that George is on point about 75% of the time, basing it off of my opinion, but with song I agreed 100% appreciate you guys!!! Keep it going.

@@redchic Tarja, Annette, and Floor. The 4th you might be thinking of was Floor when she temporarily joined to finish Annette's last tour, then ended up staying. One thing I really like about Symphony X is that quite often they write in weird time sigs, but they often do it so artfully you don't even notice. The main riff in this song (the heavy one) is in alternating bars of 5/4 and 4/4 and its super groovy. See what you think of their song Paradise Lost. Or the first track off of this album, Inferno.
