Very clear tutorial Thanks so much for putting together! 👌 - 2 small questions if you don't mind - 1. How does one distinguish between use cases of sync and backup? Is it overkill to have a Sync job AND a backup job - especially given that I might be the only one accessing the files in my account? 2. I see in at 12:41 in the Drive portal, there is a "Computer Backup" folder, but I couldn't see how that was created
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! 1. It's hard to say to be honest. A sync job is not a backup job, since issues with the file will sync to your NAS. However, if you're using snapshots on your NAS, you can "fix" any potential issues that might arise. Overall, I suggest having a backup job for your important information. I would certainly say it's NOT overkill to have a sync and a backup job, but where you conduct the backup job IS important. For example, I wouldn't worry about syncing the files from my PC to my NAS AND backing up the same files on my PC to my NAS. However, I WOULD back up the folder location where those files are stored on my NAS to the cloud. This would ensure that the files are moved to my NAS, then backed up to the cloud. 2. Towards the end of the tutorial, I showed how you can back up a computer using Synology Drive. That's how that file was created! Hopefully this helps, but let me know if you have any other questions!

@@WunderTechTutorials Wow, thanks for the generosity of time and the robust response! 1. Ok, cool. that was in the plan for me - to go with something like Backblaze or something like that. 2. I was logged in as my administration user and not as the user that I use to run the backup! 😁 Once again, great video and thanks for taking time to respond.

Thanks for your efforts! The tutorial was very informative. However, I do have a few questions if you don't mind. 1. I'm pretty confused between "sync" and "backup." So, let's say I already synced my folder (from my PC) to the NAS. If something happens to my PC, can I still access those files from the NAS using a different or new PC? And then eventually, re-sync that same folder to the that PC you'll be using? 2. Can this be configured wherein the admin can access all users' sync folders while user's can only access their own? Thanks!
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! 1. A "sync" is basically exactly how it sounds. When a file is modified on your local PC, it will "sync" that file to your NAS. Depending on how you configure it, the "sync" will send it in real-time, whereas the "backup" can be scheduled (or it can be sent in real-time as well). If something happens to your PC, the files will still exist on the NAS. Just be aware that if something happens to the individual files on that PC, they will be "synced" to the NAS first. That's why it's important to set up snapshots as well (I have a video if you're interested in learning about them). 2. The admin user can login to DSM, go to "homes", then select the username of the user and view their documents inside of the "Drive" folder. By default, users can only access their individual files. Hope this helps!

If you sync, and you accidentally delete or mangle a file on your PC, the sync process will delete or mangle that file on your NAS. Gone forever. If you backup your PC with the Synology Active Backup for Business ( I use this for my home files ), and if you accidentally delete or mangle a file, your NAS will, if set up to retain old versions, will have many versions of those accidentally deleted or mangled file going back days, weeks, months or even years if that's how you set it up. Thank you for the excellent tutorials! I just purchase and set up my first NAS for home use, a DS923+. It's purpose is reliable storage and backup of my extensive photo collection (amature photography). I've set up my NAS with an admin account as well as a personal account for myself and my photos as well as eventually my music collection. Of course as a beginner at this I'm sure I've made some wrong turns. At first I mapped my NAS to my old Windows PC and then my newer Mac Mini M1 which is now my main photo editing workstation. My NAS stays pinned in Win File Explorer but does not with Mac OS when booting but it is easy to reconnect. Editing files on my NAS works though I notice the speed difference. So, I've installed Synology Drive Server and tried to set it up, but I'm sure I've made mistakes in doing so. I don't understand the file structure at all. Whereas I can see my personal shared folder I created and mapped, I don't see where my synced My Drive folder is in Exporer or in Finder for files I've synced with my Mac Mini. I do see the photos I synced from my mobile phone. I need to understand what I've done wrong. I didn't see that folder check box your mentioned in the client that I should deselect. I wonder if that is the problem.

Thanks for the tutorial. I am learning how to setup my Synology and this helps a lot. One thing I find a little scary with setting up sync and maybe a really dumb question..... will sync first look at the PC or at the NAS for files? So let's say I have a folder on my PC with 30000 pictures en I set up sync....will it sync the pictures to the nas or empty the folder with the pictures in it because the folder of the nas is empty? I am pretty sure it won't delete all the pictures on the PC but I wish it would be made clearer by synology.

@WunderTechTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
First off, you should always ensure you have backups before you try anything "new". This will give you the confidence to try and set it up. However, it has always synced the files from the NAS, FIRST. It shouldn't delete any files on the NAS, but regardless, if you have backups, you have a recovery plan in case something goes wonky :-)

You can, and there are a few different ways. It truthfully depends how the files are encrypted. Most likely, you are correct in thinking that the files will be overwritten. Is this for DSM 7.0? or are you going to create a NEW video for DSM 7 ? or will these instructions work fine for DSM 7? Sorry for all the questions.

It's not for DSM 7, but DSM 7 should be the same. The only difference is that you'll need a newer version of the Synology Drive Client application. Let me know if you have any questions!

I would definitely back up the data first, but as soon as you back it up, you should be able to uninstall the Drive application on the PC. At that point, confirm that the data still exists on your NAS. If it does, just delete it from the PC.

I have question about deleted files from Drive, where i can empty recycle bin from my user home folder, on shared folder options in control panel when i'm logged in as administrator i can empty recycle bin for folder homes but that doesn't empty recycle bin from my user which has his home folder? Is there options to set up to delete automatically after some period?
@WunderTechTutorials

In the Synology Drive Admin Console (through DSM), you will be able to launch the application, then select "settings". From there, you can "clean up" all recycle bins if you'd like! I don't know of a way to automate this.

Thanks for this superb tutorial. If I may kindly ask for your help. I created a Sync Task with ShareSync of one folder in my PC (Win10) to my Synology Drive using the One-way Upload under Sync mode (Selected Upload data to Synology Drive Server only). All the PC subfolders successfully synced with the exception of one subfolder. I repeatedly verified under Sync rules that the particular subfolder NOT syncing is checked. I have tried to delete the Sync Task and recreate a new Sync Task but to no avail. The particular subfolder is still not syncing. When I open the Win10 File Explorer, all the subfolders and files syncing properly have a green check, whereas the particular subfolder not syncing has no green check. Would appreciate any advise. Many thanks.

Thank you for this tutorial! I just setup my first sync and backup. When I checked my NAS, I was a little disappointed to see that all the creation date/times for files and folders are set to when the files/folders were first uploaded to my Synology NAS. Additionally the modification times for the folders were also set to this time (not sure if it'll change as folders are modified. Still I would like the last modification date/time, not the date/time it was first uploaded to the NAS). Is there any way to preserve the creation dates/times of the files/folders as they are on my pc? Is there any way to preserve the modified dates/times on on my folders as they are on my pc? What other metadata are not preserved in the backups and syncs?
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
Glad that it helped! I don't think that you can go back and change those dates. Technically, the "creation date" on the NAS is when the file was initially uploaded which is why it's showing that way. There might be a way through SSH that you can do it, but I'm not sure how important that is to you. You are correct in stating that the modification dates will update properly, but even then, there might be a 1-2 minute lag on them since it might take a minute or two for the file to start to sync to the NAS.

Hi, to copy time and date stemp use robocopy command line tool in windows. Check to possible arguments like /MIR for mirroring. I know it is possible to correct those wrong dates you have with robocopy as well, but not by heart. If you move or copy a file to another partition windows by default set the current date and time.

I initially created two shared folder for both me and my brother. Now I am confused as by activating home user, if I go to file station I have two different folder home and homes, and also the earlier created shared folder for each user. In homes folder there are folder for each user which I can access and there is no password protection or privacy ? My questions are as follows 1. How can we sync already created shared folder in drive ? and can we get rid of homes folder? 2. If it is compulsory to have homes folder, is there a way to put password protection to each home folder so that it can be accessed by that specified user and not anyone?
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials 3 жыл бұрын
If we take a step back, when you say that they're accessible by everyone, do you mean in DSM as an administrator or through SMB? The homes folder is necessary to use Drive Server, so unfortunately, it can't be disabled. As for syncing shared folders, you might want to look into "team folders". I believe that will do what you're looking for: www.wundertech.net/synology-drive-server-tutorial-sync-local-files-to-your-nas/#team-folder

I only want to sync a specific folder and it's subfolders within a shared folder using the Team Folder. Is this possible? The folder is 6 levels deep from the root of the shared folder. Do I have to create a new shared folder and move the target folder in it? Really don't want to do this if not necessary. Am I missing how to do this?

I don't think that you can sync subfolders on the Synology side, unfortunately. I believe you can do it on the other side (PC), but not the Synology side.

Hi. I followed your instructions months ago, and kept in syncro the data drive of my PC with the NAS. I've reset my PC (hence the OS drive, not the data drive that was synchronized via the Drive Client, which has been left intact); I've downloaded the Drive Client, opened it, but when I insert the Username and psw, it answers "Invalid QuickConnect ID or Syn Drive Server has not been enabled". Could you give me any suggestions? Thanks in advance

What did you enter in - the NAS IP or were you using QuickConnect? If you're local, typing in the NAS IP address only should allow you to connect.

@@WunderTechTutorials Wonderful! I've been trying with the QuickConnect name of the NAS, not the IP number. After your suggestion, I tried using only the IP address, but with no success; then I added User and psw to the IP address, and it worked. Thanks a lot, have a nice Sunday evening..

I just purchased a DS420+ with DSM 7 and have had trouble creating a sync task that would sync c:/.../documents and c:/.../pictures. I couldn't get the files to update on the NAS. I finally deleted all the references I could find that were created trying that. I found your video and followed the instructions, but things did not look the same. I skipped the sync task and went to backup task. I created a continuous backup task. Selected the two user on my PC, and did not uncheck any of the directories under them. The backup task works well. I then tried again to create a sync task. When I try to select the local folders on my PC, I see the users are grayed out. However, I can open the user and select a folder. When I select the Documents folders and click OK, I get the message "This directory cannot be synced because on of the subfolders in this directory is being used in an existing backup task. Please select a different folder. I tried pausing the backup task and changing the Mode to manual, but I get the same message. What have I don't wrong? Is it possible to have a sync task and backup task that copies the same folders to the NAS?

@@WunderTechTutorials Thanks for your reply. @@edhann4884 Got it - the Documents folder can sync to your home folder (that's how mine is set up). For this, you will not need a team folder. However, if you're going to use the PC backup as well, it might be redundant (meaning you will back it up twice), therefore, it's probably best to just set up the PC backup.
