We will install the Syncthing App on an Android device, a Linux computer and Windows. And I'll show you how this will automatically backup your phone photos to one or more computer computers. This solution does not require any cloud access though it will work over the Internet.

Rob, Have you looked into Resilio Sync? It's pretty close to Syncthing, but without the centralized server. I have mine set up without the use of a relay server, no tracker server, and you can tell it to use predefined hosts (your internal IP) from within your network using port 26131. You can also have it use a relay server if needed, but I find that you rarely need to use one unless you are trying to sync via the internet. I have mine set up to where let's say 3 of 5 peers are predefined with internal IPs only, and only 1 pair (like my phone, and then one computer at home) need to be reaching out to the internet. My internal peers grab the new files from the internet-reaching peer. This used to be called Btsync or Bittorrent Sync until they renamed it to Resilio Sync, which by the name suggests uses bittorrent protocols that are decentralized by nature.
@TommyHe
@TommyHe 2 жыл бұрын
As someone who switched from Resillio Sync to Syncthing, it by default also using a centralizes server and hard-coded by Resillio Inc. The discovery and relay servers of Syncthing, on the other hand, are community maintained and configurable. The setup you did(LAN-only peer sync) can also be done in Syncthing as well.

I've had an error trying to start up Syncthing on 2 different Windows PCs now. If you install Synctrayzor and get an error at startup that says something in the log at the bottom about config version (36) is newer than supported version (35) then it's easy to fix. Open file explorer and go to: C:\Users\(your user)\AppData\Local\Syncthing) Open the config.xml file and change 36 on the first line back to 35, save and exit and you should be good to go.

@@gimlam5909 fastcpoy (Windows program) defaults to only copying different time/date files and can be easily setup to copy/delete files at the destination to look like the source for a folder and its subfolders using what it calls 'sync' for a transfer method; does not modify the source as that term normally implies though no one gave the author a better title for that feature (he speaks only a little English). If you want to track several unrelated folders in one step then you likely want a batch file instead of its built in jobs. Doing it automatically is what syncthing and similar offer over a manual program to copy files.

@@officialnotesonlifepodcast But Syncthing isn't a cloud. it's a tool to transfer files between ONLY your devices, there is no centralized server like google drive or something. it's only between your devices and is fully encrypted. And it syncs automatically... Trust me if one of your devices breaks and you backed up a month ago or two months ago, there might be things in it from the past 2 months that you didn't back up and you'll feel bad.

Hi Rob. I've been using Syncthing for a bit now and love it, but ran into issues on the Android side with file permissions. Couldn't create a folder that was allowed access by both Syncthing and Joplin. The workaround I've been using is to install an older version of Joplin that doesn't enforce the current Android storage restrictions, and then never let it update. Not exactly optimal. Do you know of any better method?

Does this work to backup contacts and device settings as well? One of my biggest concerns about having a de-googled phone is I have no idea how to have it automatically back itself up and not use the cloud. I understand that seems to be the point of the video, but I'd like to know what syncthing's limits are if any in terms of being able to backup a degoogled phone.

I don't see how this is a backup. It is a sync. If you delete photo(s) on either your phone or your laptop , the photo(s) will be deleted on the other device. That is not a backup. It is even less than a backup than google photos is. At least in google photos your photos are retained for a month if they are deleted.

This video brought me success installing Syncthing on Linux Mint. The key component I was previously missing which prevented my success was Syncthing GTX. Thank you!!! Now that I have been using Syncthing a couple days I grow frustrated with its incredibly slow speed. It makes USB 1.0 look like a race care next to a tricycle. By reference, to backup 250 GB data from my iPhone to my 2012 Mac Mini takes just over an hour via a USB2 Lightning cable. A similar size backup from my Google Pixel 6 Pro phone to my 2022 Linux laptop over my home wifi 6 network might literally take one to two weeks. This is not unworkable to backup & sync a huge music library and many camera videos. Has anybody found a faster backup solution, preferably something involving USB-C speeds?

I don’t look up somethings on duck duck go, that’s probably just as bad as google 🤷🏻‍♀️ I do Not use it for banking, ordering food, no fakebook etc. I might go on TruthSocial every other week, if that. I hardly ever plug it into a outlet. I have several different characters. I actually have settings telling me I have 3 upgrades because I never update it. Oh and I do not talk to my phone! Most of the time I have double tape on the camera. If I take pictures I put them on a usb. When sleeping or traveling by car, I turn it off and it’s put away in a special wrapping that I made. Thank you so much for your responses. I hope you have a blessed day. 🙏😇

Any idea how this compares to nextcloud for features and experience? I'm new to Android and found that first. Figuring Syncthing was more about file copying than being a personally hosted cloud (=making the 'someone elses computer into my computer) option. I figured difference is some things don't like to present themselves as files such as contacts and calendar though if I use OpenContacts and don't use calendar I guess bets there are off too for how I think.

@janburn007

@@danmano478 All mobile phones have an IMEI. They require an IMEI number (or 2 IMEI numbers if it's a dual SIM mobile phone) in order to make phone calls & send SMS's using the SIM card's mobile phone network. Without the phone having an IMEI, the SIM card will not be able to connect to the mobile phone network. Each SIM card slot has its own IMEI (in the case of a dual SIM phone like the Brax2 phone). So it really does not matter which phone you use for 2FA. Your on-line mobile phone account record with your mobile phone provider will often show the IMEI of the mobile phone you used to make the last phone call using their SIM card. If you take the SIM card out of one phone & put it into a different mobile phone & then make a phone call from that new phone, the IMEI number in the phone company's records will then change. The SIM card links to the IMEI number when a phone call is made or an SMS is sent (so it can connect to the phone network) & that information is then automatically held in the phone company's records. Although the IMEI's of the Brax2 phones currently being sold are not "registered" -most other mobile phones on the market do have registered IMEI's, & it's somewhat unusual for a mobile phone to have an unregistered IMEI. Rob Braxman did indicate in one of his earlier videos about the Brax2 phone, that not registering the IMEI's of the Brax2 phones was probably a mistake & something that was overlooked, saying that the IMEI's of the Brax2 phones should have been registered. The IMEI's are usually registered in bulk, quoting the "range" of the IMEI's (the "from" & "to" numbers) for the particular make & model of the phone that is being produced/manufactured, together with the specifications for that particular phone. Having a registered IMEI will enable most mobile phone carriers to readily identify the make & model of phone that is being used with their SIM card, & helps them to know whether that particular phone will work successfully with their network, based on the phone's particular recorded/registered specifications. It also helps the phone carriers to assign the correct "settings" for the phone in terms APN's etc - so the phone will work with their network. If the IMEI is not registered, the phone carrier/SIM card provider may not be able to know what make/model of phone is being used with their network & therefore may not be able to correctly determine if the phone should work with their network, & may also not be able to provide the correct settings for the phone - as each make/model of phone may require slightly different settings, based on the phone's own specifications. The fact that the Brax2 phones' IMEI's are not registered already seems to have caused a few problems for some phone users (especially in the USA) with some mobile phone companies, while some other users have not experienced any problems at all, connecting their Brax2 phones to their mobile phone network. This is one of the reasons why Rob Braxman has said that the next lot of Brax2 phones to be produced (in July), will have registered IMEI's. Originally he advised that as the IMEI's could not be registered retrospectively, the current lot of Brax2 phones will continue to have unregistered IMEI's - however he did just recently mention on his web site/app that he is currently investigating a way to get the IMEI's of the present Brax2 phones registered retrospectively. Because of the unregistered IMEI's for the present Brax2 phones, when some people have had problems getting the phone to work with their SIM card/phone carrier, they have been told by their phone company that their phone is being detected as a "Z10" make/model of phone based on the IMEI number, & are therefore being told that the Z10 phone is not suitable for use on their network. Then, the Brax2 users have had to explain to their phone company that it is not a Z10 phone, but a new make/model of phone called a Brax2. They have also often had to provide the phone company with all the specifications for the Brax2 phone, to see if the phone company can determine whether their service is compatible with the Brax2 phone. So, a mobile phone not having a "registered" IMEI can cause problems for some phone users - & it would probably make things much easier for most users, if the IMEI's of the Brax2 phones were registered at the outset. For privacy purposes, it makes little difference whether the IMEI's are registered or not.

If you're one person, you can do manual backups. But nothing beats unattended automatic backups. Nothing to remember. Set it up once and forget. And very important when you have family devices, not just your own.

Can Google legally "read" our files that we upload to their cloud? Facial recognition would require them actually accessing our files and getting info from them.

Please. Make sense. If they're offering a free service then it is paid with your data. Google docs. Google Drive. Google photos. They've publicly said they scan the Google photos. You think your gmail is not read either?

Syncthing asks for Location permissons because of how Android handles wifi and mobile network access for apps. Unfortunately, in order for apps to determine if the phone is connected to wifi for example, it needs the location permission.
