Black troops fought on the front lines in the Rhodesian Army, Selous Scouts, and in the SADF in SWA and Angola. They were not drivers and mechanics. They were combat troops. And damn fine soldiers and men.

Contrary to what John Snow implies, desertion from the Rhodesian Security Forces to the guerrillas was virtually non existent, though doubtless became a more real possibility as the forces expanded African recruitment. In fact, the movement was almost exclusively in the opposite direction. The Security Force Auxiliaries, who numbered in the thousands, were initially formed from turned Terrs.

The Rhodesian African Regiment is, without a doubt the best black military force ever raised, They fought HARD for the white government. Most blacks in Rhodesia did not want communism, they just wanted to be left alone to work or farm.

Whether they were motivated to leave because they were “punished” for being against Mugabe or whether they just left because of economic conditions is unknown I’d really really like to see an interview with a black veteran from the RAR. It’s a side of that war that’s not often talked about

The blacks were Shona, Matabele and Venda etc. In general, they were not considered Rhodesians for the adjective "Rhodesian" was normally used for members of the white population.
