The original puthenkoottukar is the people who supported and accepted the supremacy of pope. The Roman Catholicism was new to this land and this was brought to India after arrival of Gama only. Then naturally those who accepted pope and Roman Catholicism must be called ,,puthenkoottukar". Those who returned to their former faith must be called " Pazhayakoottukar". The history was distorted by the influential, powerful and who had funds.

because the old church leadership moved on to catholic church. The rebels got a new leadership. So the majority laymen that did not rebel and actually aligned with old leadership is called pazhaya koor, as they did not change their koor to old church leadership.
