Thank you so much! Your very clearly stated instructions just saved me a huge headache and a significant number of my wedding pictures. After my DS1815+ stopped turning on, the jumper method worked for a while, until one day after a power outage, it started remaining in the blue blinking LED stage indefinitely after turning on. For whatever reason, this 1K resister not only restored the use of the power button, but also fixed the blue blink of death I was getting when using the jumper. I really appreciate the effort you put in to documenting this fix!

This is great it fixed mine hopefully I'll be able to replace it at some point. I did the Seasonic PSU mod when I first got mine (used) and it worked great until I unhooked it to move it. After that no boot. Tried the 2 psu test from NathanPH's video and still no activity. I did these 2 resistor mods and got it booting again. Thank You Gary what a LEGEND!

Gary, thanks for your guide to fix the power issue of the 1815+. I watched this video multiple times, also in frame-by-frame mode around 6:53. But I feel I could not recognize exactly enough where the two wires of that 1 kOhm resistor have to be fixed on the PCB, your soldering points look a bit in the shadow and slightly out of focus here. Could you please add some information on where to put the R exactly? Thanks in advance! Cheers, and a Happy New Year! How can I send you a close-up of my PCB, that I just took? There are these two triple-pad patterns, one is empty, the other carries a transistor. It looks like you place the new 1 k between the 8-o'clock-pads of these two triplets. Correct? Pls confirm or correct. Thanks again.

Hi Gary, great video, thnx and been a Synology user for years, but this 1815+ has nothing more then a headache. Within 3 years it failed and got replaced, but 1 year after replacing, just outside of warranty it failed again of course. So many users have been affected by this. Synology doesnt offer any help or repair options, just a bit of discount on a new unit. I will never buy Synology again! My unit doesn't boot either, 100ohm was already done after first replacement. My power supply is just fine and boots when shorting black and green but the 1K doesnt get the job done. Put a second in series, so 2K, doesnt work either, any idea's?

Hi Gary, thanks for the fix. I just got a beat up Syn server for free, because it doesn't work. From what i've seen (constant blinking orange alert light) the 100ohm resistor should fix that problem.. hopefully. However, it did have another problem too, that the prev owner had a fix applied to it because its powerbutton stopped working. He had it fixed by soldering 2 of the 24-pin together on the backside, to make it work. It does work, but the server starts automatically when plugged into power, and the only way to shut it down is through DSM. Could this be that he used another way of solving the same problem? Or does it sound like a completely different issue? Can you suggest me how to test it? I considered removing the solder and try the 1k resistor fix, but i'd like to hear your take on it before i do anything.

Soldering two wires from the 24 pin connector is proof that the transistor is the issue. Applying the 1k resister to those two solder pads shown in the video will/should solve the issue. Make sure to remove the connection on the 24 pin connector though.

@@perfect.stealth It's true that eventually the transistor could totally fail and need to be replaced. Sometimes installing a higher K resistor can fix it too. For now I prefer the resistor fix, replacing that small SMD is difficult.

Hello and thanks for this video - I have the same problem with my NAS just now. I was just wondering where or how you found out about this resistor fix? Why 1k ohm resistor and why the two contact points as described in your video? Any other resistor specs I should know about? Is this a better fix than swapping the transistor? Do I have to do both? I guess I need to go get myself a resistor. Thanks!
@GaryQuiring
@GaryQuiring Жыл бұрын
Because the transistor is surface mount, it's harder to replace. Many including myself have resistors in their electronic junk box and are able to fix this NAS the same day it fails. You can replace the transistor to fix it and that new transistor will fail again. Why 1k, it's what I read works but I am sure other OHM's within reason will equally pull down the transistor so it turns on the NAS.
@GaryQuiring
@GaryQuiring Жыл бұрын
You have to add the 100 ohm resistor for the Atom bug fix. Do that while it's apart, it will also prevent the NAS from working if that fails. That's an Intel bug. The 1k can be added or you can replace the transistor, either will fix it.

@GaryQuiring 2 жыл бұрын
More than likely it's the same thing, I did a quick search on KZbin and from what I can see the motherboard looks very similar. It could be the Atom bug or the transistor. I recommend doing both. You could also short a pin on the power supply connector between any black wire and the green (there should only be one green wire, if not do not do this). The short should turn the system on, if it turns on you know it's the transistor issue.

I just checked my server and it was offline. I went to the box and it was dead cold. No lights, nothing. I thought it was the battery backup system acting up, but sure enough the 120V was on the line so its something in the box. The box already had the resistor fix for the CPU so I knew that wasn't the problem. Took it apart and the power supply checked out fine on my tester. So its not power supply. This is when I started to get worried that its a major fix. I checked the youtube videos and other people with 1515+ units had similar issues and showed the jumper setting to check out the transistor. I bridged the Q4 transistor and sure enough it came to life for a brief second. AHA! At least now I'm not turning green wondering if my server is permanently down. I took the motherboard out as shown in this video and looked at the transistor on a microscope. The letters read "1AM" and the letter "F" sideways. I looked up the spec and it turns out to be a MMBT3904 NPN transistor. I don't have one of those lying around so check my stock. Hey, I got a MMBT2222A NPN transistor. I wonder if that would work? I checked the specs and the pinouts are identical. The only difference is the collector current is 200mA on the 2N3904 and 600mA on the 2N2222. Close enough for government work! The 2N2222 is marked as "1P" on the transistor body for those who are looking for similar parts. If you have old PC boards with SMT parts, they are all over the place. Just check out the markings to make sure you have the right parts. FETs also use the same SOT23 style package. I fired up the hot air rework station to 350C and put that nozzle right on the part. Two minutes go by, nothing. Hmm... Cranked it up to 400C and tried again. Nothing. Crank it up to 450C and heat that part. Still not flowing! Crank up the air flow higher and its still not coming off. The motherboard is heat sinking too fast to even melt the part. I started to smell plastic burning and realized the connector next to Q4 was getting singed. Ack! Plan B. Fired up the soldering iron and hit the part with the soldering iron instead. Its not melting!! Arg.. The damn solder they use is very high temp solder. I added some 60/40 tin led solder and the part came off immediately. Good old tin lead solder to the rescue!! Took the part off and cleaned the solder pads with solder wick so its nice and shiny. Slapped in the new part and soldered it in place. Cleaned up the flux with some good old isopropyl alcohol and looks good as new. Put everything back in and did a test run. Hey!!! Its starting again! It's ALIVE! Yay!! Put all the parts back together and fired it up. Its purring like a kitten. Now I can access all my bootleg... errr.. legit movies that was "backed up". Time to dim the lights and get out the lotion.... Thanks for your help! It worked out great. Saved my day!

I applied both fixes and I still could not use the power button. It was able to boot after I jumpered the green wire of the power supply to the black ground next to it. Previously when I tried the jumper boot I got the amber alert and power flash non-boot issue. At least the 100 ohm is working. I'm pretty sure the 1K was secured well. Am I missing something?
@GaryQuiring
@GaryQuiring 28 күн бұрын
The transistor (Q4) is probably toast. You will need to replace it. It's a BC847 which Amazon sells. I replaced one just two weeks ago. My 1815+ that I did the 1k fix on about 3 years ago had the same issue, it would no longer turn on. Shorting the green and black on the power proved it was working. Once I replaced the transistor it booted but it still required the 1k resistor which surprised me. The root cause of the problem from what I have researched is an out spec voltage coming from the power supply. I replaced a resistor in the power supply last week but there is no way to know for sure if that will permanently fix the problem. I was planning on making a video on how to change out that resistor, it's not easy. It's very tiny, SMD type. For now get that BC847 replaced, that should give you several years of service.

@GaryQuiring
@GaryQuiring Жыл бұрын
@@chriswright3327 The 100 ohm resistor is an Intel bug with some of their Atom 2xxx CPU's. It's not related to the 1k resistor fix. I have to assume when I bought my broken NAS the owner tried the Atom fix (which he did not mention in his ebay listing) and when that did not resolve the problem he sold it. It was not common knowledge back then about the 1k fix. I found the discussion on a German forum and decided to try it. The 1k fix is because the transistor (BC847) fails which prevents the system from turning on. A lot of the Synology motherboards have the same design with the transistor they label as Q4. Since yours is turning on most likely the Atom fix is all you need.

I must correct myself. Took the case off and the resistor has not been added to that location. Hopefully this will fix my NAS.
@GaryQuiring
@GaryQuiring 2 жыл бұрын
@@midauskuda There are two resistor 'hacks'. The first was for the Intel ATOM bug. That is what was fixed under your warranty. The power supply issue is NOT the power supply. It's the electronic switch on the main motherboard that is failing due to that transistor. That switch tells the power supply to turn on. If you want to test before applying the resistor take a paper clip or wire and short the green wire on the power supply connector to one of the black wires. The NAS should turn on. If you are remotely color blind then don't do this!

@@GaryQuiring The DS415+ doesn't have that transistor you solder a resistor to because it uses an external power supply and has a different configuration on the motherboard. The repair for the DS415+ is the atom bug fix. What you did to his device you can not do to the DS415+ or any other Synology devices that use the external power brick.

That's no minor resistance change, why not get what is recommended? The 1%, 2% 10% does not matter, 1/4 watt is fine but you should get something close to 1k.

@@jvfx7469 It's the transistor that is failing. I found the resistor comment on a discussion forum a while back. You could replace the transistor (which would eventually fail again). Hi Gary, thanks for the video. I have the same issue on my DS1815+ If I short the green+black wire on the PSU-connector, the NAS just starts fine. I used your fix with a 1K-ohm resistor, but it still won't power on... (Only If I short the PSU green and black) So I know the PSU and motherboard are still Allright, but the fix didn't work for me... Is there something else that I could try? (Using a higher or lower Ohm resistor?)
@GaryQuiring
@GaryQuiring 2 жыл бұрын
Did you apply the Atom bug fix with the 100ohn resister? You could try a higher Ohm resister for the transistor issue. I would start by reheating the connections for the 1k resistor, maybe it's just a bad solder joint. You could also replace the transistor.
@Tokkevo
@Tokkevo 2 жыл бұрын
@@GaryQuiring thanks for the fast reply! The atom-fix was already factory-applied. (This is an RMA-replacement unit from 2018) I just reheated the leads so the solder would cleanly join the solderpad and the leads from the resistor. It's a very pretty solder-job if I say so myself, so I'm quite confident it makes contacts on both points. Since the transistor is very small, I don't know that replacing that one will be possible... So increasing the resistance might help? Then I'll put it another 1K-ohm in series with the current one.

@@GaryQuiring Hi Gary, thanks again for the tips! Measuring the voltages on the green and black wire made me realize that the transistor was not doing anything when pressing the powerbutton.
