Thanks a lot. I have repaired RS2416+ Just now. This is very helpful video and fixed my work NAS. Synology was suggested to buy new NAS(mother board is not available) and re-configure raid, which is expensive. You saved me. Thanks again!

Thank you for this video, we have the same model of this NAS from synology at work and the last time we turned it off, it wouldn't restart anymore and we had the same symptom as we had run out. After watching this video, we became aware of the problem and proceeded to repair by adding a resistor according to your recommendations, the whole operation was successful and as a result our NAS started up correctly with all the data. Thanks again and best regards.

Glad to hear that it helped. Do keep in mind that this is meant as a temporary fix that works around the defect in the Intel Atom CPU. It will eventually fail again and will be unrepairable. It may work for a month, it may work for a year. But at least you can access the data that was stored on it.

Hey thanks man. I just had TWO RS2416RP+ fail pretty much simultaneously. I'm going to give this a shot.

Hope it brings them back long enough to recover data. They may last awhile longer afterwards, though. The one from this video still works for me.

Of course I find this video specific the the Synology we run after I no longer need it. I saw this mentioned for different models and give it a shot. The only difference was that every single one of our hard drive bays were red, the first row was not green. This still worked! :)

I'd definitely suggest considering a replacement for the unit. This is meant as a band-aid kind of fix. The NAS will work but who knows how long? Days, weeks, a year? The underlying flaw with the Intel Atom CPU still exists. This fix will at least give you a chance to migrate data on your schedule.

It was neat how mine failed mid-update from DSM 6 to DSM 7 and after the repair, picked right up where it left off. I was expecting it to be bricked.

Just in case others thinking it was dsm7 omuts not just the cpu bad timing and failing, so much good Synology hardware I won't buy because it had this cpu also seems to affect the J1xxx cpus as well (not just c2000 cpus)

Thank you for the video. I just repaired a RS2416RP+ after watching it. Worked perfectly and saved many $$$ for us and the customer. This repair method is confirmed! 🙂 I just wonder what that 100 Ohm resistor does. How critical is that value? Would a 0 Ohm jumper or a 1kOhm resistor work too?? I have to investigate that a little more... BTW: It is not necessary to remove the mainboard from the chassis. Just put the resistor into the holes 1+6 and solder from the top side.

interesting - I have a 2414 with the exact symptoms - if it is a chip failure would replacing the processor fix it? will try this fix

I can't really speak to the different model of NAS. The issue was tied to a specific faulty Intel atom cpu model. These Intel atoms are soldered directly to the motherboard so I do not believe replacement is an easy option. Certainly not upgradeable like a socketed cpu.

It looks like you left the drives in while you did the work, and left them in while firing it back up. and all your data remained intact? i have a similar issue with mine so hoping to try this but don't want to risk losing data. thanks in advance
@SunkCostGarage
@SunkCostGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Correct. If you specifically have the Intel Atom CPU issue that plagued many of this era of device, and the lights on the front are doing a similar thing with a no-boot situation, this fix might work around the issue long enough for you to migrate the data off of it safely. If it fails, in some cases you can get an identical unit and swap the drives over directly. (The partition information is stored on the drives, not the device.)

@@SunkCostGarage Thanks for the info. we had the power light flashing green, the alert light flashing red, and the drives with flashing amber lights. our unit is an RS815+. Synology just said its out of warranty and its a main board failure, buy a new one. but thinking we could try this after checking everything with a multimeter?
@SunkCostGarage
@SunkCostGarage 2 жыл бұрын
@@jammstudiosmusic I'm not 100% sure if the process and symptoms are identical for the 1U NAS but there's a forum post in the description of the video where I got much of the information on the issue. You might reference that thread to make sure before attempting. I believe the main boards are very similar though.

I have a DS1515+. It will run but just lose network connectivity. A reboot will make it available again for about 2 hours or so, then network lost. The logs show the system is running even after network is lost as missed backups are logged. Is this similar to what others are seeing?
@SunkCostGarage
@SunkCostGarage 3 жыл бұрын
This sounds like a different issue altogether. The Intel Atom CPU issue specifically causes the unit to not power on or not boot. Defective integrated network card, perhaps?

hey guys, the Synology said 100R / 100 ohm 1/4 watt (0.25w) and you said 100R / 100 ohm 1/2 watt (0.5 w). Which one is good ? I don't want to make mistakes :) Thanx.

I'm not sure if that's the same failure that this fixes. The resistor fixes the issue with the 3 red lights and 9 green lights.

The underlying CPU design flaw is still there. It could last a day, a week, a month, who knows? Long enough to get your data migrated to something else, though.
