Hi Will! Thank you for all your videos, they are AMAZINGLY helpful. One question I haven't see an answer to is do you set your Synology with a static local IP or do you let your router assign it whatever it gives it? Just got my Synology DS920+. When I transfer movies from my laptop (hardwired) to my old WD EX4100, I get a consistent 111-113 MB/s. When I try the same files going to the new 920+, it starts off at those levels and then drops all the way down to 20 MB/s at about the 30=40 percent complete mark. Then it goes up and down but rarely going above 90 MB/s. I made the adjustments you suggested (they did improve a little). I also swapped cat6 cable and changed switch port. I have one drive in the 920+ currently running in basic, and it's a wd red plus 12tb. Shaking my head at this point.

When running with 10GB, jumbo frame will speed up your connection. You can see the difference when testing with IPerf4. I would also recommend using Multi Channel to get more speed out of your NAS. I have reach up to transfer speeds of 1.7 GB using a dual port SPF+ nic in both my Synology and pc
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 2 жыл бұрын
Hoping smb multi channel comes to DSM later this year. Right now you can do it, but there is a bug that could lead to silent data corruption so I cannot recommend it to people yet. As for jumbo frames: when you have a fast network card, cpu, and switch you sometimes do not need jumbo frames. By having standard network frames you get higher 4k IOPS as small requests get sent earlier

I’m curious what drive configuration you’re using. I just got a DS1522+ w/ the 10Gb (E10G22-T1-Mini) w/ 4 WD Red Pro, and 2 Samsung 970’s. My main computer is the Mac Studio which has a 10Gb LOM. I’m running my Red’s in Raid10 w/ the two 970’s as read/write cache. I’m disappointed in how caching works. I was hoping the write cache would help with all I/O such as large video files on the writes. Not the case. So what I’m seeing is a max of 550MB/s on writes and about 1060MB/s on reads - which I believe is about right for a single 10Gb adapter. So in order for you to reach 1.7GB/s I’m assuming you’re using 2.5inch SSD or 6 or more HDD’s - in addition to SMB MultiChannel. Can you confirm? Thanks.

@@ghostdogzx-1474 I´m using 8x12 tb reds with 2x 512 nvme drives as cache. The read speeds is because that you have to copy the file a couple of time to get it into the cache. The first time, its's coming straight from the spinning drives. When I write, it goes directly to the cache and I get average of 1.2 Gb/s. I´m using a solarflare sfn5122f nic, which is a dual port sfp+. (X520-DA2) and Multichannel. I do not use link aggregation. I use jumbo frames and the nas, computer and switch which is all 10 Gb

@@johnconley4118 This was helpful info. In this case I’m still not sure why my writes are only 550Mb/s. Based on your info, I would expect about 920MB/s with a single 10Gb NIC at line rate otherwise there must be a bottleneck somewhere. I wonder if the reason you’re reaching 1.2Gb/s has more to do with you running more HDD’s than the cache itself? I’ll do some experiments and see if I can get line rate if I switch from RAID10 to RAID0 (as a test). If this reaches line rate it’ll tell me that my bottleneck is the HDD and that it’s not caching in the way I expected. Thanks again!

Disabling Transport encryption and Server Signing is the most important i guess, if you dont need it, disabling makes huge benefit, thats correct. Anyway, i do use Synology Directory Services for years and do not have any issue having these options disabled. Not sure, what exactly do you mean to keep encryption enabled to make Directory Service working properly? I did not realize any issues.
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 2 жыл бұрын
Ah looks like they now allow you to leave them disabled: “SMB Signing allows SMB communications to be digitally signed at the packet level. After a domain is created, this feature will be enabled automatically, which may reduce read/ write performance during SMB file transfers. To enhance performance, please select Auto or Disable from the Enable server signing drop-down menu at Control Panel > Domain/ LDAP > Domain > Domain Options.”

Awesome tutorial, you explained everything perfectly! Wondering if these changes would also effect Plex server. I noticed it gets slow when Closed Caption is turned on. It some cases it just keeps blanking the screen out and not able to display. When looking at the Synology NAS the processor is at 100%. So doing Closed Caption just goes nutz. Hopping these performance changes you recommended would fix that. Thank you!

Hi, i have some Questions. I got the DS1621+ with 3x 10TB HDD and 2x 512GB M2 SSD for Cache. I use a 10GB network card and a 10GB switch. My Mac Studio is also connected to it, on which I cut 6k RED RAW recordings. Unfortunately, I never get the performance I want. I use RAID 5 and have 16GB RAM installed. This should actually be enough. I'm the only one accessing the NAS. My questions: - Should I enable Jumbo Frame? - Are there any special settings that could improve my performance? (Block size, cache settings?) - Would a network bond improve performance? (Use both 10GB ports?)
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 2 жыл бұрын
So first I would try jumbo frames and see if that will help you out. Also make sure that these other settings are done. The bond is not going to help you out if its just you. So this heavily comes down to what issues you are having. If you cannot get smooth playback (and you can if the data is on the internal SSD of the computer) then you may be running into a throughput issue. The jumbo frames can help with this, but also adding in 1 or 2 more 10TB drives will give you faster overall throughput. Its tough to say without seeing the system

Checkout your disk usage when you are doing a copy. having 3 drives in SHR1 means that only 2 drives can be read from / written to at a time. This puts those speeds ~somewhat~ in the expected 300-400MB/s of 2 drives in a RAID. Likely adding another disk (if your volume utilization is above 90% during this copy) would get you 50% more speed

I understand why you are saying to drop AFP and switch to SMB (even Apple going this way). But my experience is AFP simply works better. Our use case is we are using 3x locations with Synology Router's Site to Site VPN with maybe 10 AFP Shares and for the last 5+ years it has been rock solid. And, I have another application where I used SMB with macOS Shares. I was running a Linux VM on top of vmware fusion and using large files shared to the Linux VM and they kept getting damaged (no idea why). Once I figured that out I switched to using Linux NFS to Synology Shares and it has been rock solid. So, I have some negative experience with SMB. Maybe it was Samba on Linux or some other issue. I was just trying to have fast i/o to linux from macOS SMB Shares. Now, I am moving those Linux applications to Synology VMM on the same box but will still use NFS Shares. MAC hardware is faster but with Apple dropping INTEL and I need INTEL for this application I decided to give Synology VMM a try. Also, upgrading to DS1621xs+. Maybe I will switch a few of my shares and test SMB again that would not affect my main applicatoin of the NFS Shares. Lastly, thanks for all your videos. Have watched a number of them and they have been helpful.

Totally agree with you, there are just some cases where AFP is better, but they tend to be a bit more niece. One thing I would look out for is apple silicon macs. It seems like apple did not do a great job porting over AFP to apple silicon and has quite poor performance (just small testing)

Not using SMB 1 seems to be the prevailing wisdom but I found that without it, some network devices would not appear on my Windows 10 desktop's File Explorer. I do wonder if it's possible that another network setting has caused that problem though. My DS920+ is not exposed to the internet and is used on a home network for a very modest amount of file sharing, backups, and multimedia. As a result, I think the risk is pretty insignificant.

I am guessing that those network devices are quite old, or something like a SONOS speaker.
