Dude, you're the man! After taking suggestions from other videos and seeing small improvements, I made the change that you suggested of unchecking the enable memory compression etc. Now getting full 111-114 MB/s transfer speed both ways from my wired computer to my new DS920+. Thanks so much!

Thank you for this tip! I didn't get 111 MB/s, I actually got 83 MB/s. But it's much better than the 30 MB/s I was getting before this setting. I think I might increase that rate after populating the other 2 bays in my nas, cause I got only 2 (of 4) disks, in SHR.

I got 120MB/s right out of the box ... i use 5400 rpm HD (Red and ironwolf), 20Go Ram and 1To SSD (not used as cache but as storage)

I have been trying to fix my network speed issues for MONTHS!! I followed several other videos, posts, how-to's, whatever I could find. The "create a bond " on the two network connections fixed it all! THANK YOU!!!!

A couple of comments from a NAS addict who has a couple of QNAPs and Synologies lying around the house in various roles. All the points raised are definitely worthwhile with some having more impact than others. I would argue the 5400 rpm vs 7200 rpm difference is relatively small at least for my various usage cases, with networking setup having more speed impact for sure. I don’t favour QNAP over Synology but for those with a QNAP that supports NVMe, it is definitely worth filling both slots. Any caching benefit is ok, but it makes surprising little difference for my mainly streaming/large file transfer applications from only or at most two PCs at a time, but QNAP also lets you use them as separate storage volumes. I have found I get better bang for buck using them as a single SSD Raid volume when working on a photography or video project. Much quicker for sending draft or snapshot versions of something I’m working on while I keep going until I’m done, and then I send them over to the slower mechanical drives to archive when finished. Works really well for my workflow.

Hi and thanks for the video! FYI I did the "disable of the memory compression"....and after the reboot my DS218+ went into the dreaded 'blinking blue of death' :-0 I did the usual fail search procedure and removed the disk, the blue blinking continued after power up. I then removed the extra 8 Gbyte extra memory, still the same issue. Then i noticed that the USB Google Coral was blinking (have not seen that before) hooked to the DS218+ via a USB powered hub. I removed the USB....an voila the DS218+ came back to life :-D !!! I then plugged in the Memory, HDDs and USB and it worked just fine again. The memory is now uncompressed but i have not yet been able to check for potential performance gains yet. Cheers!

Nice video, about to get a NAS as I have an old WD MyCloud NAS, I might get the 920+ or 720+ but I may hold out as they say the 922+ is coming :)

About the drive speed.... the faster it spins the more heat it creates, so slower drives will help keep the unit cooler.

@7:30 you talk about 2 Ethernet Port bond, if i connect my Asus ax86u Router's 2 LAN ports (one 2.5g + one 1g port OR Two 1g+1g ports) Link directly to the NAS DS920+ will this boost my transfer speed rates? My purpose is 1. Backup 2 iPhone 13 photo + videos via WiFi router 2. Backup 2 MacBook pro time machine via WiFi router 3. I also plan to add 3 security night vision cameras for house on DS920+ will these work? 2 outdoor + 1 indoor (have not yet decided on make and model, but will only get the Synology Compatible cameras) 4. On Asus ax86u Router Ping priority is given on Xbox Series X LAN Ethernet gaming port. 5. On Asus ax86u Router only other Wired LAN Ethernet connected device is Apple TV device. 6. Purpose of Synology NAS DS920+ will only be, back up family photos + videos, and some folders with Video Data for video editing on MacBook pro 26inch laptop via WiFi router (not LAN wired Ethernet) 7. Four Seagate Iron Wolf Pro 16tb each, total space 64tb (32tb main storage + 32tb Backup storage) 8. My internet connection is VDSL2 download 30mbits and upload 15mbits speeds. All i do is Watch Netflix, KZbin, and play games on Xbox Series X. Please note: I have yet to purchase all of the above mentioned devices for my new house, by June 2022 i move to my new house. Awaiting your kind response

So I'm using 2x 1 Gig ports via my router and also a switch, copying files down from the NAS via 2 machines I get over 200MB/s which indicates both ports are being used from the NAS. Copying from the NAS and to the NAS across 2 machines at the same time gives me, again, over 200MB/s however copying up to the NAS from the two machines I get just over 110MB/s which is something I need to look into further. In my example above, these are all wired connections whereas you're suggesting using a lot of WiFi based devices, this might be your limiting factor here as that might be congested back to the router.

If one has upgraded the RAM from the 4GB standard to 20GB, what would you recommend regarding the Memory Compression setting?
@Byteofgeek
@Byteofgeek 2 жыл бұрын
Disable it and see what happens, with 20GB you might notice little difference though as most of that memory won't be used by the OS

What's the difference between bonding and link aggregation?
@Byteofgeek
@Byteofgeek 2 жыл бұрын
Same thing, different name 🙂
@SocialWorkProfessor
@SocialWorkProfessor 2 жыл бұрын
@@Byteofgeek Oh. OK. I was confused then. I thought you needed a special switch for link aggregation but you could still get a speed advantage without a special switch using what I thought was called, bonding.
@Byteofgeek
@Byteofgeek 2 жыл бұрын
So normally yes you need a switch that supports LAG, however Synology allows you to bond the ports internally giving you the same result without the need for a special switch. Other operating systems like Windows call it NIC teaming 👍

Speed is only good for video editing backup. 5400rpm are more reliable, quieter, less power
@Byteofgeek
@Byteofgeek 2 жыл бұрын
I think speed is for more than video editing but you're correct about 5400rpm drives although I've 10 year old 7200rpm drives have outlasted 5400rpm drives, sometimes it's the luck of the draw 😒 but if you want more performance then these are the things to consider, hence the video 👍

Does adding nvme drives increase the plex performance?
@Byteofgeek
@Byteofgeek 2 жыл бұрын
It should do if you have multiple users of plex
@jasonterry3634
@jasonterry3634 Жыл бұрын
This is going to have very different answers depending on your plex setup. If you are watching 1080p home movies that have been decently compressed then it wouldn't do anything. Even at 4k with decent compression it's likely not going to do anything. But if you have several streamers, or watch uncompressed video, then it might improve things.

Be very careful with using this bond technique. I used this and it killed my home network speed. My internet speed dropped from 1 gig to about 90 meg! When I turned off the bond and power cycled my router, my internet speed came back to normal. I've seen other youtube channels discuss this "bonding". It destroyed my network performance. Your mileage may vary.
