Thank you thank you for an excellent tutorial. I upgraded my 2019, 21 1/2 inch iMac to a 1 TB SSD and 36 GB of RAM. I have been running Time Machine. for a couple of years on a Synology DS220J NAS. After I completed the upgrade, I tried to restore the iMac with Migration Assistant and it could not find the NAS. after several hours of searching I found this video. During (4:37) the set up of Control Panel, File Services, Advanced I clicked on Set Time Machine Folders and found I did not have Time Machine selected. After I selected Time Machine, the complete restore with Migration Assistant ran without a hitch. I am so happy to have my computer working again.

May I ask why you gave it 1 Terrabyte of data if you only have a machine that is 256gigs? Also I am assuming since the NAS has way more storage than 1 Tbyte that you can drop and drag documents from your computer to the nas and work off of them or down load them as required?

Hi Jeff, One of the best tutorials I've ever seen. Just ordered one of these, after my 20year old ReadyNAS has become redundant. it looks pretty straight forward, great presentation, looking forward to seeing more tutorials. I intend to use it as a DLNA video server for my TV too and also looking for the best ways to share my music via iTunes if possible.

Why would you use SMB for Time Machine rather than AFP?
@indiekiduk4 жыл бұрын
No one should, the SMB client version on the Mac does not work reliably for Time Machine it requires v4.8, Catalina is still only using v3. bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12380

My first backup of my three Macs went flawlessly with SMB. Subsequent backups sometimes worked fine but later wouldn't work at all. A search found this is common and Time Machine backups on a NAS may be problematic. I ended up switching to AFP and it worked, but Apple doesn't support this and it is lower security. So, it looks like I may be going back to external drives.

Excellent. I need to upgrade my TimeCapsule over the coming year. I’ve been so happy with TC’s wireless backup with TimeMachine, I was annoyed that Apple’s discontinued it. Enter Synology. I need to know all about using the DS220J with my MacBook Pro. I do graphics stuff w Adobe CC and will be expanding from mostly image files to creating more audio and video files thanks to KZbin, Zoom, and podcasts, and 2020 isolation.

Question: To backup multiple Macs would each Mac have its own user/folder? For example “TimeMachineiMac” and “TimeMachineMacbookPro”. Or would/should each computer share the same user with different folders for each computer? I believe this is how my current external hard drive TM works. I’m not sure if it being a NAS makes a difference. Thanks for your help.

Hey, I'm just starting to look into a NAS set up! Wondering if it's possible to direct both my MBP (500GB) as well as my External HD (2TB) to 2 separate Time machine shared folders? I'm assuming I need to set up one shared folder and call it "Time Machine MBP" and set up another shared folder and call it "Time Machine External HD" then carry forward with the same step you've laid out?? If that's not the case I would love to see a video on how to do so...

Nice video! I would be interested to hear if it proves to work reliably in the medium to long term. I.e., whether it continues to back up reliably and whether you are able to restore from it. And whether the quota works - whether it starts deleting old backups when it reaches the limit or just fails from that point on.

Hi, i have a question. I bought a synology 920+ with 4 times 4 TB. I was adviced to use raid 5. And installed the whole system. Now i found out i only have 10.6 TB left, wich is too small for all my backups. Is it possible to take one 4TB out and replace it with a 8TB? Will i loose any data or programs? And will it "see" the new disk as a 8TB or will it see it as a 4TB?

do you know of any way to compare time machine backups? So like a list of differences between them where we can see which files have been added, deleted or modified between 2 or more backups on our external disk so we can quickly check the differences between all our backups and change back any files that were mistakenly changed before it's too late and the oldest backup gets replaced as time passes as we may not have even noticed a change (deletion, addition or modification) on certain files that we may not want to remain as such? That would be a VERY VERY useful tool!!
