I ran into this when I got a new GrooveBox and realized I liked my Yamaha QY70 a lot more, even only knowing how to use it like half right, and that it served most of the purposes the new instrument overlapped with. Even further going, good lord why are SO MANY SYTNHS attached to a keyboard now? I have a keyboard I like with all the features I would want from MIDI, I don't need 10 more, I need 10 more synth modules. For this reason I've been collecting Vintage rackmount gear lately, makes me sad it seems like nobody produces any synths that can be 19" rack-mounted anymore, we just get the overly expensive, confusing, and cluttery Euro-Rack modules.

I use reasons instruments and the Arturia V collection a lot to sample to the Digitakt and Tastychips. It’s more than I’ll ever need. I do also have a TR-8s that I dont think I will ever sell. Selling the older version of a device when you upgrade, that I can understand. All other reasoning is mostely part of #GAS… it makes you feel good and ‘in-control’. This is why I’ve started to buy decksavers (or alternative cover) AND a case with every synth or module I buy, so they can be travelled with and/or stored separately. It also makes the initial buy more expensive, which is a good thing. The idea to hold on to devices is to fall in love again ever once in a while… what made the device a great purchase at first? All mentioned questions and comparisons should be made upfront, also by not jumping the ‘I want to be one of the first users’ train.

I agree with most of your choices here - and you also make a great point: This isn't about you hating on any of this gear, it's about where you are at this point in time, and which tools are applicable to that place. I have probably....10 synths and drum machines sitting around me right now that I don't use - BUT... they're sort of on my "never sell" list, and I'm not (emotionally) ready to part with them. A piece of gear I WILL hate on, just a bit, isn't actually a piece of gear, it's a company - and that's Polyend. They burned me alive as one of the people who paid $800 for a first gen Play, and then, 3 weeks later, dropped the plus. The path to upgrade for me would have put that device well over $1000, and that just made me bite my lip. I doubt I'll ever purchase anything else from them. The thing that SURPRISED me the most on your list was the TX-6. I think a lot of your subscribers thought you would hold onto that for years. The only thing that would have surprised me more would have been your 1.4, but I think it'll be a while before you get rid of that. 😐All the reasons that he mentioned why he’s getting rid of that gear is why I don’t buy any of that “type” of gear. You will sooner than later get rid of it for exactly those reasons and more. Even the stuff he kept will be discarded in 24 months or so. In my opinion I find that that type of equipment is distracting, fiddly, and a waste of valuable production time. I also didn’t find it surprising he didn’t like the audio quality of that mixer, especially at that price range. I think that type of gear is gimmicky and way too overpriced for what you get. You can do much more with the proper modernized tools at a similar (if not better) price range. To be clear, I’m not trying to hate or throw shade here. I’m just trying to educate buyers that when buying equipment, make sure you buy gear that has longevity and will serve you today as well as tomorrow. The objective of buying gear is to get.sh!t done, completed and paid for by your client so you can pay your bills and move onto the next project, not to fiddle around in the studio for hours wasting valuable production time. I’m speaking from over 30 years of experience and learned my lesson long time ago so today, I try to stop younger people from making the same mistakes. The only proper gear I saw in this video was Ableton Live, so my suggestion is to buy equipment that will complement Ableton Live and not waste time trying to do something it can do better and much faster. Take from this what you will.✌🏾
@LiamKillen5 ай бұрын
I don’t like that you’re speaking for me. I’ve put out videos dedicated to gear that I’ll never get rid of as well. For me, the balance lies somewhere in the middle of hardware + software- it really all depends on what your goals are.

If you have another poly synth, Micro freak is WAY better thank Mini Freak IMO. I would also never suggest it as entry level synth regardless of the price, to someone who hasn't grasped basic skills with subtractive synthesis. Offering all these different oscillators/sound engines , including Noise Engineering trio and Mutable Plaits, MicroFreak is way way more complex than say Uno or smt like that. Also, Digitone vs Volca Fm (factually DX7) - No, Digitone cannot be considered volca Fm on steroids, its other way around. You have entire Dx7 in that small box. If you know FM programming , extra 2 operators and three vs two outputs and more algos on Volca beat Digitone . Digitone is 4 op Fm with very soft sound and multi track sequencer, the other is full on DX 7. I hardly see an overlap, except if you don't want to have more than one FM synth. Even if you find FM programming to be daunting, which I personally love as that was the first synth I ever learnt how to program, you can still get million cartridges from the OG Dx7 into Volca Fm via sysex. Deffo no overlap as Digitone is very modern in design and sound. I have OG DX7, Tx81Z, MegaFm by Twisted Electrons and Digitone, plus a few complex oscillators in modular setup and each of these does different thing.

@@LiamKillen love the content. just want to point out smt you often do, that more expensive gear doesn't mean better - Volca FM 2 is 100 quid little box yet it has full power of 6 OP Fm monster like DX 7, whats more it is compatible with it. So Volca FM is Digitone on steroids (6 vs 4 OPs, more algorytms etc) , not the other way around :)

DAWs, virtual instruments, and DAWs' controllers have surpassed their hardware counterparts, by far, making DAWless music production irrelevant (in my opinion). I might never sell my Deluge though, just because it's so easy to carry around and fun play with.
@LiamKillen5 ай бұрын
I see your take but i think it really depends on your approach and how you compose music- hardware I still think is really really useful especially for introducing like a live / tactile performance element to your approach.

If you're going to sit there on stage with a computer you might as well press play on an iPod and walk away (most of them are anyway). In my opinion, it's the computer performers who are irrelevant
@AdamsOlympia5 ай бұрын
I think the term "dawless," as it's commonly used today, is a misnomer. 20-30 years ago, most computer DAW users would have sold their left kidney for the portable power of modern MPCs, Deluge, Octatrack, or most other dedicated digital audio production computers. They're all DAWs, just somewhat crippled and lacking a qwerty keyboard or mouse input ...

@@ianzamost5632 Watch any of Beardyman's performances and tell me how that's any less involved or relevant than artists who perform without a Mac or PC based DAW? If anything, PC is far MORE demanding, technical and relevant, as you can customize an insane level of performance controls that just aren't possible with hardware grooveboxes.. Check out his Ableton rig, controlled by 4 iPad Pros with custom Lemur layouts, providing an insane amount of inputs/sliders/macros. YT title: "Studio Secrets with Beardyman" Of course some performers automate their sets more than others, but the point is - you don't have to be hands off.. With a PC, you can add as much granular control as you want. The performer can design the interface and nearly every aspect of how it works.

The sequencer is not so intuitive on MPC-1, no real drag and drop multitrack arrangement screen I believe. Not nearly as easy as a decent DAW or the various multitrack samplers/grooveboxes of lesser price that have easier to manage song creation tools, like Sonicware SmplTrk. Of course these aren't as powerful as the MPC1 but that's even more reason for MPC implement that sort of thing.
