It’s a knotty one, alright. I think it depends on a number of things, not least of which is motive. On balance, I am of the view that it is immoral. Creating synths as slaves is obviously immoral, but I’d also say that producing synths simply because you can is immoral because you’re adding people to a system that can’t necessarily support them. The synth themselves would be suffering in a resource-scarce environment. Then you have everything in-between: creating synths as soldiers is immoral because you are creating a thinking being purely for the purpose of putting it in harm’s way; creating them as spies is immoral because you are creating a situation whereby they are likewise in a great deal of danger; both situations also remove any agency the synth might otherwise have had if they were simply created to “be” their own person, just as much as if you were creating them as slaves. Their purpose is established prior to their creation - this isn’t what happens with human beings. Plus there’s the personal, psychological issues it could cause. That’s because the way synths are made here is that they are *copies* of people. That, for me, is harmful. What if they meet? You’d have a person dealing with the psychological shock of meeting their clone, and the synth has to deal with the fact that they are missing a massive chunk of their memory and the shock of having to confront the possibility of not being “real”. I’m sure there are arguments for it, but on balance, I think that the creation of synths is immoral, especially the way the institute developed the technology to work, but that there is no inherent moral issue with regard to synths themselves - they are as much a victim of the process as anyone else. This is because synths are clearly sentient as well as sapient - they recognise themselves as a being that exists, and are capable of reason, emotion, responding to pain and pleasure… they may not be “human” in the conventional sense, but they are thinking beings with ontological validity. So - synths themselves aren’t an immoral entity, and are just as valid as any raiders or minuteman. However, the method by which they are brought into being is profoundly and incontrovertibly immoral. That’s my take, I think. Hell of an interesting question, though! I imagine that philosophers in the fallout universe could wrangle with it forever! It’s been three years since you posed this question - have you thought about it in that time? And I agree, I’d like to watch a video on this subject, it’d be fascinating.

@@steveharrison76 A few points to add: 1. The synths that are made to look like specific people are spies of sorts and know they are synthetic working for the Institute. Those with the memory encounters are Railroad synths who had their memory wiped for their protection (how effective that is, is another question all together). 2. An argument for synths is that it allows the ability to build a sustainable population for a society that might not be able to create it otherwise, and with the skills that it takes humans decades to acquire. Humans have children in all sorts of situations and I'd argue that that is not in itself immoral at all. People have little say over the situation they find themselves in that compare most in the real world to the Wasteland (poverty, wars etc). To judge people based on this is cruel, callous and ignorant. I'd say the same applies to synths. E.g. If the Institute, the Railroad, or groups of Synths or others build synths to quickly supplement their population for the sake of having children or ensuring a safe and stable population to function it morally ok. But only as long as they treat the synths as equals and sapient beings. The Institute clearly don't do this, they are making slaves. 3. To do something for the sake of science or because you can doesn't necessarily make it immoral. In this case, if that was the reason to create a batch of synths initially then that would be acceptable as long as those involved were prepared to accept their moral responsibilities to the new people they created. (They weren't and made slaves so no) 4. The Institute actually seem to have the least clear aims of all the factions, which is strange and confusing. What do they want to do eventually? What is Father's goal? Does he want to terraform and restore the Commonwealth? Does he want to just protect the Institute? Does he want to dominate the Commonwealth? What do the other key figures in Institute want? It's not clear, and so why exactly the Institute does what they do isn't clear. Why are they creating gorillas for example? The Institute use slaves, but if they seemed to have real aspirations to restore the Commonwealth they could be at least more morally complex. It's an interesting topic and I don't think Fallout 4 or the factions adequately explore this.

With this mod, I created an army of myself, and with another mod that allows you to take as many npc's as possible as followers, combining also with power armor productions, I have made the institute unstoppable, with me and my army of me, myself, and the other I think 400 me's? probably just under but hey, it's an entire army. I'm currently waiting for a mod that allows you to make your followers charge without doing anything, but hey, wasting a couple bullets to kill the entire Diamond City population (Using the mod "killable children" i was able to do this.) is good enough for me.
