As someone who's never owned a groovebox of any kind, this is the one that has stood out the most out of all of them to this day. I think the fact that I have no experience with any work flow has made the deluge just look head and shoulders above is competition for me personally. I'm finally going getting mine soon after a few years of contemplating it and I couldn't be more excited.

A friend brought one of these babies out last night to the jam session and it was super fun to try out! I still prefer my Elektron boxes for workflow but this is quite amazing and unique. It reminds me of a cross between a Novation Circuit, Ableton Push, and Drumbrute all together.

OK, so Deluge is awesome, but at that time Circuit, Electribes and OP-1 were pretty much the only groovebox options and Deluge is indeed more exciting than them IMHI. Since then MPC One, Digitakt, MC707, etc have come out and competition has become much stiffer, but yes, Deluge is still very special

@@loopop Between all of the options now available, what is the one groovebox to rule them all? I am interested in the Deluge, but being an old-school Electribe EMX-1 and Yamaha Rm1x guy, the lack of immediate controls is concerning. For me, the beauty of grooveboxes is immediacy.

From the sound design video of yours and the patch demos I've heard elsewhere, it doesn't sound like the unison has a spread feature (panning of the unison voices). Is that the case? Would also be cool if they added a granular engine of some kind. Either way, I researched five or six drum machines last year and this is by far my favourite. Time to start saving up in earnest.

Hi Loopop, Firstly: thanx for your great information on instruments! I have some questions about the Deluge workflow, compared to the ES2 sampler which I currently own and which is the brain of my setup. - Would you consider the Deluge better suited for creating entire (complex) songs? (as far as I can see, it is in a lot of ways, but perhaps you have an interesting perspective on this?) -Would you consider the Deluge quicker to use in a live performance situation than the ES2? Cons that I personally experience using the ES2: -lot of menu diving (even with shortcuts) -limited pattern length -very limited resolution/quantization of the sequencer (no subtle nuances possible) -stepsequencing melodies is really slow -having to switch to other modes to mute/set pattern/etc -strange high pitched noise while playing some samples or triggering Midi notes) Have a nice day!
@loopop
@loopop 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It seems like you're familiar with ES2 - just watch my full 3.0 tutorial and you'll see the differences - my opinion of which is better doesn't matter, its about whether the workflow suits you

I'm not a typical user because I review new gear almost every week, so I don't get to use much of anything twice unless it fits in with a review of something else. @cardboardmusic
@cardboardmusic 3 жыл бұрын
@@loopop Yes, I saw an update (of yours) from last year "Deluge 3 - Full Tutorial [...]". Out of interest, since you mention the competition, which other machines would suggest looking at (to compare)? I bought, as mentioned, a Korg SQ64 hoping it would do some of what I needed, but very quickly I noticed it was actually a rather 'ungainly' to use, especially note inputs, especially live. There were several other niggles, some of which you mentioned in your review, and even a few features which don't work correctly, are unpractical (in my opinion) or redundant in the form they've designed. I should say that a couple of these are due to a firmware problem, which I'm sure they'll fix one of these days. As for the Deluge, from what I've seen in your reviews, it seems its ease of use is quite amazing, especially when you see the amount of possibilities. Of course, it's also more expensive, so I guess there's a moral in the story somewhere! Thanks again.

As usual, very helpful video! Deluge and Digitakt seem to be the obvious competitors (many people comparing them) despite the many differences. Maybe it's because of the sample-sequenced combination. But when comparing them through the videos so far available I'm having a case of cognitive dissonance because I keep hearing about the limitless capabilities on the side of the Deluge and the limited ones on the side of the Digitakt and, still, the Digitakt demonstrations sound all generally great, while in the Deluge ones it appears as if it was very difficult to get interesting and useful sounds out of it. Perhaps the learning curb is rather steep for the Deluge? Or, simply, the synth and effects are just not well designed?
@loopop
@loopop 7 жыл бұрын
(WxkR) thanks very much for the kind words. Hopefully the little track I played in the beginning of this clip shows that the Deluge can hold its own (headphones recommended). Most of my (and I think the company's) clips are feature walk throughs and not songs so I agree from a sonic perspective they're not that impressive. I don't think they sold anywhere near the quantities of the Digitakt so more music might be slower coming. I'll try and contribute my own too in the future...
@ToyKeeper
@ToyKeeper 6 жыл бұрын
I've occasionally looked for demos of both devices ever since they came out. There's a surprising lack of Deluge demos showing good songs made on it, but I've seen a bunch of good Digitakt ones. I like both and can currently afford neither, but when that last part changes I think I'll have a hard time deciding on one. Lower price and fewer features with a more optimized workflow, or higher price and more power with more complexity? Fancy drum machine with performance-oriented groovebox features, or something like a hardware DAW on the surface of an isomorphic keyboard? Which would work better for controlling external synths? Which would be most useful for composing songs? Which is more fun to play? Should I ignore both and focus on a real DAW instead? Not expecting any answers... just some questions for me to ponder and research.

The deluge is super easy to use. Problem is the type of people that have bought it aren't making the music you might like. I make all sorts from house to trap to techno to Synthwave. So perhaps check my channel. I own several other synths and this one is my favourite to program on. I also release presets so check those out too as they are much "bigger" than the presets that come with the machine. Cheers.

One of the main limitations I tend to see in Deluge demos is that it seems designed for a workflow of using a single pattern and turning individual tracks on and off, instead of being able to chain patterns together or order them into a song. It can group tracks by color and toggle entire groups, creating something like multiple patterns, but it's a bit of an odd solution. As far as I can tell it works well for single-pattern performances, but not so well for linear songs or verse-chorus-structure songs. One of the best solutions I've seen to this was to have a set of individual track patterns plus a two-dimensional song structure, where each song pattern in the order is a set of individual track patterns. If that makes any sense. Like, with instruments A, B, C, and D, a song might go "A1+B1+C1+D1, then A2+B2+C1+D1, then A3+C3, then A4+B1+C2+D2, then A5+B2+C2+D2, then A6+C4". Except, like, longer and more instruments for a complete song. The Deluge could totally do this after a firmware update, but as far as I'm aware it hasn't.

Hey - that question is a whole video... overall - Octatrack pros: live looping, scenes and crossfader, more audio ins and outs, LFO designer to name a few. Deluge pros: CV outs, the grid, built in synth, multisampling, also to name a few ;)

@@loopop Many Deluge demos are enthusiasts and many Octatrak demos are more experienced musicians. I've seen Octatrak in professional live sets but not Deluge, obviously Octatrak has been around long enough to be more widely utilised. From what I see Deluge offers more to my taste though.

One thing I would have loved to hear is the synth engine. In Synthstrom's original videos they *also* didn't provide high quality synth demonstrations. Does anybody have high quality synth sounds from this thing? Right now, I'm not too impressed with them but they might be good for all i know.
