He has improved like anything. Added something like 17 new techniques. He string skipped, 8-finger-tapped and all. But the thing I noticed the most was the change of his picking hand. Synyster Gates used to pick with his pick angled for an upstroke(like Misha Mansoor and Shawn Lane). That is kind of the opposite of Paul Gilbert. But now he is holding his right hand in the conventional way. It is enabling him to do hybrid picking also. That would have to take a hell lot of practice to change something mastered over years.

I know I'm very late, but, as an old A7X fan I used to see Syn pick all weird especially during sweeps and think; As amazingly skilled as he is I wonder how much his picking holds him back? But I keep coming back to this video, even years later, like now. And the added hybrid picking allowed by his 'new' picking style brings his playing to another level!
