Say what we want about Leinart and his work ethic in the NFL and so forth, that 4th and 9 pass to Jarrett is one of the biggest clutch plays I have ever seen in any sport. The execution was perfect and it had to be. Two-time defending champions, 20-something game win streak, a chance for a third straight title all riding on one play in the most hostile environment in the most historic place in the sport and they nailed it. Cold-blooded.

This game had many classic, memorable moments. It was then punctuated with probably the greatest college football game ever played, Texas vs USC in the National Championship Game that same season. I'll never forget it, I lost $5,000 betting on USC to win. Tough pill to swallow.

That era was the Pete Carroll one in which unfortunately for USC they were in a weak pac 10 conference so if they didn’t go undefeated the BCS was not too kind to them. Had the college football playoff existed back then they would have been it every year

Far and away the most dramatic and electrifying football game I have ever seen in person. USC sent us season ticket holders a DVD of this game the next spring. I still pop it in and relive the entire incredible game. I simply do not have the words, even now, to describe the atmosphere that day.

It was a great game, no doubt. But the best college football game ever, and I've been watching over 60 years, was the Cotton Bowl in 1970 (following the 1969 season) between Notre Dame and Texas. This was the first bowl game that Notre Dame had ever gone to and Texas was undefeated. Few gave Notre Dame much of a chance, but they led until the waning moments of the game when Texas pushed across the winning TD.

But USC Trojans have always been the only true power west of the Mississippi. USC has the fame, the names, the power, the glory, and Oh My.....all those national championships & Rose Bowls. Oregon never soared to the lofty heights that USC did. Not even close! And USC is going to be back very soon. Lemme tell ya from an east coast guy most of my life USC was the only team that, as far back as I can remember, everybody on the east FEARED. And rightfully so. Duck fans' greatest nightmare is Pete Carroll coming back to USC. All hail the mighty Trojans!!

USC is a team everyone else respects & knows is no pushover. You cannot beat USC in the title game if you don't play outta your mind & have massive, strong Offensive & Defensive linemen. The one thing that nobody will ever do if USC loses a title game is mock them. Because anybody that manages to beat USC in a championship game will KNOW they were fortunate. We didn't see that with Oregon-Ohio State. Ohio State absolutely stopped Oregon in the latter parts of the 2nd half. Total domination. Nobody would EVER dominate USC like that.

USC hasn't been relevant since 2009...Blame losing scholarships or hiring of bad coaches ..outside of the Pete Carroll era from 2002-2010..the Trojans won no national championships since the 1970s..so besides that era of success they've done nothing ..the 1980s and 1990s they were losing to teams like Fresno State and since Carroll left losing to the bottom half of the conference ..if there this judgnernaut like your saying then no excuses they should be winning the Pac12 each year not losing to Stanford constantly or getting beat by lower teams like Arizona or Utah this is why the arrogance of Trojan fans are annoying .

ND Fan here.This game will always haunt me I was a 10 year old child when this happened...and I bawled.I watched the #1 USC team maul ND the year before and saw ND come up short in 2000 against #1 Nebraska.I always thought that is never see ND beat a #1 team in my life...until it finally happened on November 7 2020 and I'm now 25 and I cried just like I did in 00 and 05.But this time I cried tears of joy Go Irish!

You explode into ecstasy believing you just ended a historic streak, beating your biggest rival, you rush the field, believing it’s all over, only to be called back to sidelines and for seven seconds to be added on the clock. You appear to stop Matt short, only for him to miraculously fall into the end zone thanks to the “Bush Push” an illegal play, but one they weren’t calling all that much. I was there for that game, and Notre Dame Stadium does not have a big screen for replays. When the clock hit zero the student section flooded the field. Then the guy in the booth comes on and says "GET OFF THE FIELD! GET OFF THE FIELD! NOTRE DAME WILL BE PENALIZED IF YOU DON'T GET OFF THE FIELD!" The official said to put 7 seconds back on the clock and the place exploded with boos. After the game the crowd starting chanting" We are ND, we are ND" then "Get off our field, get off our field". Then it got ugly and everyone starting "Suck our Dicks, Suck our dicks" We may have lost that huge game, but that was the best weekend of my life!

personally, i love how ND grew their grass 10 inches long in an ATTEMPT to limit USC's speed. definitely the thickest grass i've ever seen on a football field.. ND's attempt at cheapness was pre-meditated.. bush's push was just smart instinct.. besides, linemen push their RBs for extra yardage when the RB is in a pile.. same thing
