The most exciting team EVER for the Illini, and right up there with Houston's Phi Slama Jama on the fun-to-watch meter. Oh, how I wish there'd been HD broadcasting back then.

Best Illinois team in my lifetime. The 2005 team was great but did not have the inside power of the 1989 team. That said, I have so many fond memories of both. Many thanks for this upload.

Both of those teams were Chicagoland kids that were tweeners. Hamilton was 6'7 center with Anderson 6'5 and battle 6'4 not 6'6. Gill 6' 4 Bardo 64. 2005 had smaller group with The Texan being the one not from the state. These teams both were comprised of players that were playing center or fowards at high school . They were starters as sophs and were only recruited by smaller schools.

Louisville. Syracuse. Then Michigan. Illini and Cuse would have spanked set in hall.

@@jasonh5547Henson was a horrible recruiter. Mo Cheeks. Was one of first he missed on. 1980 Iowa went to final four. 4 starters were from chicago. 2 public league and 2 catholics guys. Depaul had Corzine and ponsetto in mid 70s. They got Aguirre, Cummings in late 70s. Marquette, Louisville, Indiana, Michigan were always taking top states players. 76 Michigan had Rickey green and Phil Hubbard from public league. Isiah, Hardaway, Wade, rose, Howard, rivers, tons if talent that he just let his vanilla personality drive them away.

@shawnyoung8752 Iowa had an assistant coach from Chicago, that's why. That's how they got Ronnie Lester and those guys. Once Lou Henson hired Jimmy Collins, he got the Chicago talent. All those DePaul guys were bought and paid for

Tough region with two de facto road games for Cuse. Too bad they would've dog walked Michigan & Seton Hall in the F4.

Coleman. Owens. Douglas. Thompson was like illini kids. Henson was worried about him the most. Illni was kids who played foward and center for High school teams. Nobody would take them even as Small fowards. These guys were great jumpers of the floor. Quick and could bounce. Battle was called 6'6 in intros. He was barly 6'4. He was like a left handed Adrian Dantley. 6'4 to 6'6 guys who played against guys 4 5 inches all thru HS. If Liberty wasnt such a wuss. They should have won title. Last 5 minutes of duke vs kentucky was both teams having players making shots that noone expected. 89 semi first half was sluggish. 2nd half was a big ten brawl. There were 24 ties and 22 lead changes with 5 to go. Robinson played great for mich. Hard to guard 6'9 rice shooting from 23ft. A couple missed ft. And not boxing out on weakside cost illini. That was title game. Plus Cuse in reg final. Also could have been title game.
