Blends with Syrian and Cyprian Latakia smelled like a freshly lit fire or a BBQ joint IMO. Very "smokey" smelling. I still have some tins of my dad's that have Syrian and Cyprian Latakia in them. I have quite a lot of his blends left that aren't made anymore and have 10-15 years of age on them. Thinking about taking them to the pipe show in TX and selling them and let some of those old heads enjoy em.

My understanding is the captagon trade expansed dramatically as a result of crippling US sanctions put in place a few years ago. When a nation is severed from international finance and trade, it has to keep the lights on somehow. It's basically just amphetamine chemically bonded to a caffeine analog, and by all accounts I've seen it's kind of a shit. And given how pervasive prescription stimulants are in the US and west, I think it's silly how it's being painted by the media as some a hardcore narcotic when in fact we routinely prescribe more potent daily stimulants to children and adults, in the sky has yet to fall as a result. I would be interested to see somebody do it deep dive on captagon though and why they use a much more globally desirable substance (amphetamine) as a precursor and react it with a cousin of caffeine 1:1 to yield something that is anecdotally inferior to the precursor used and probably less valuable on the internal market.
