Can we appreciate munchie please? She's having a really difficult time in her life, stress with all the animals and enormous vet bills, and we still get videos nearly every week. We love you munchie ❤ we don't mind missing a video or two (though I love them :) )

I am a child hamster owner and I’ve done SOOOO much research to learn how to take care of a hamster! I used to have 2 hamsters ( at different times ) and kept them in tiny cages with horrible wheels but I’ve learned from my mistakes and now adopted a new Russian dwarf hamster named Pebble with a 775 square inch bin cage! 😁 She enjoys it very much and I’m busy taking her now!

Same here! Oddly enough my dwarf seems to desire more space than my Syrian, so there goes the argument so many seem to make that a smaller enclosure is fine for a dwarf. Dwarf hamsters can be very energetic and require just as much space!

My dwarf is very energetic and he currently has a 780 sq inch bin cage. He isn’t happy with it. Surprisingly, his brother is kept in a cage that is the same size (not the same cage, I separated them) and has mostly the same surroundings yet he is very calm and likes his surroundings. My Syrian has a 900 sq inch bin cage so I’m planning on upgrading my dwarf to that size as well.

My hamster got diabetes from the food we were feeding them since we got them. And I was looking for a better food and I ended up making my own healthy mix and he has got so much better since the only being on this diet for a month or so. If you want to get your kid a starter pet, get a tamagotchi or a furby. One off payment then just pay for batteries! Not even kidding, that’s what my parents did. They saw how responsible I was with my tama, and a plant, then they got me a hamster. His cage was a little smaller (but this was 20 years ago), but he had plenty of toys, chews, and my dad built a massive extension and took me to the pet shop every month to stock up on what I needed to care for him, using my own pocket money (although the parents did surprise me by buying upgrades when he needed them if I didn’t have enough). So my parents stepped up on where I fell short (because I was young and didn’t really have my own money) but I had overall responsibility in caring for him. He was nearly 4 when he passed. Parents, please, hamsters are amazing pets, I still have a ham now, but only buy your child a ham if they have shown a level of responsibility which you trust in them to care for another living thing, and only if you are willing to participate in the care when necessary. Otherwise, you’re encouraging the breeding of hamsters from profiteers playing on the demands of kids, then causing them to suffer.... just because they’re small and quiet doesn’t mean they don’t deserve the best quality of life possible......

I bought a syrian at Christmas for my little boy but I look after the hamster along with my partner and my little boy at the moment just gets to watch her play and help me clean her out. She is a bit shy still so we are getting her used to us and tame her before we even let my little boy hold her. Your videos have been great for me to learn the appropriate habitat for them, when I was younger I had russians and I had cages like this and never had enough bedding for burrowing it makes me feel so bad now that I did that. As soon as I decided to get a hamster I made sure to research and get everything ready before I bought her. She has a large tank and lots of bedding to burrow and I am adding to her toys now I know they need alot of chews and the platforms look great for her food and water. Thanks for all the great educating you do! I have certainly learnt alot.

Conflicting opinion: I am fine with parents getting them as a starter pet as long as they are prepared to take over for care, are kept in a family space, and are committed to care for their entire lives.
@MunchiesPlace
@MunchiesPlace 4 жыл бұрын
This means it's a families pet, not the child's pet. This i am fine with so long as they take care of the animal together and teach them important things together. Sometimes parents will give all the responsibility on the child till they give up and get bored or tired of it.

My parents let me get hamsters when I was young, but (I didn't find out until I was older) my mom would check in on it every day when I was in school. She made sure I had changed the water, that I had given it food, and that it was clean and doing well. I had the illusion that I was taking care of it All By Myself, but she was keeping an eye to make sure that I was actually following through. I presume, if I had actually forgotten, that she would have done what needed doing and gotten on me to remember! (It also meant that, when the animals did pass on, timing worked that I wasn't the one who found them.)

I think that hamsters are too small for children, but if you mean like 12+ it's completly okay. It also depends on the parents and how they think about pets - are they a new family members or just things.

I recently rescued a male syrian hamster from an internett ad. It said that the owner could not keep the animal, and that they wanted her (they belived it to be a girl) to have a new and better home. The hamster was 3 or 4 months old when I got him, they were not sure. He had not been tamed . He was in a good size cage, the Savic hamster Haven. I am so glad they chose to give him to me. He had been miserable before. The bars had been chewed on many times. There was very little bedding and he was sleeping in a small plastic hide hanging from the ceiling. He didn't have a large enough wheel that he could use. When I got him I soon changed the set up of the cage. I installed some large platforms, a lot of paper based bedding, a large wheel, a sandbath and hides. He loved it. He was running on the wheel for 3 hours more or less non stop the first day. He is using his sandbath daily and is tamed hamster today. I am so happy that I got to adopt this cute calm little boy :D

When I got my Syrian, I intended to keep getting hamsters, but to convince my parents, I told them having a schedule with him may help me organize myself, and I’d say that’s actually been a help. I’ve become more organized and downsized a lot of my stuff in order to have space for him, and I feel more on top of things. Any animal can help bring balance to your life as long as you’re willing to care for them and do the work.

This is bad for so many reasons, not only is it to small, gerbils chew plastic which can be deadly, the more gerbils in a small space the more likely they will fight, gerbils should have one open space as having different enclosures can lead to them becoming territorial. I feel so bad for those poor gerbils and wonder how many ended up dying due to one idiot not caring for them correctly 😔
@Dr.RatioSnail
@Dr.RatioSnail 4 жыл бұрын
@@negan1445 Can confirm that it is horrible and that all 14 of my gerbils had individual enclosures when I was a kid we only had a tinytales cage for two days before we had to get 14 individual cages that were not tinytales cages. I actually broke that tinytales cage by tripping over it in our garage after we stopped using it. We started out with two gerbils and well 12 ended up being born. They couldn't be housed together due to genders and fighting. We also didn't want any more babies. It's super irresponsible to house gerbils together. My own gerbils never liked wheels though like they just never quite enjoyed or used them ever. So they had a natural wood hide and lots of chews instead. Like they flat out ignored any wheels we got them.

The thing is that she used to bite the bars on her cage but she stopped doing that, we think it is because she didnt find her chewing toys but when she found them she stopped, th cage is pretty big (i dont know how big) if i could i would give her an enire room but i am 12 so the cage she has is good enough. Love you Munchie, cant wait for the next video💕

When I got my first hamster I was a pretty young teenager, around 13 ish. I had been wanting a hamster and did a little bit of research but was stupid enough to let my parents decide what the animal needed for me. So my little robo had a pretty rough start but when I started watching this channel and erinsanimals and a few others I upgraded her cage twice, once to a bin cage that was still a little below the minimum here in the UK. Then to the barney cage, which is around 100 by 50cm (i can't remember the square footage since I am taking a break from owning hamsters). So please do so much research before getting a pet, and when you think you have done enough, do even more. You can never know enough about these little guys in order to give them a great life

The only thing is that I don't think he likes been held or touched. Every time I try to like do bathtub time or use treats to let me hold him he just isnt too keen on it. He flinches when I put my hand near him and stuff. I have decided to just let him be and let him be chill in his cage. I've had him since early December last year sooo about 8 months or so. I am so grateful for the internet otherwise I would have had no idea the cages they sell at pet stores are cruel and inappropriate. My teenage son begged me for a hamster, and I thought, how hard can it be? Because I had never had one before and pet store makes it seem so easy. Luckily the pet store asked us to adopt for free a special-needs hamster on the condition we get her a large glass tank because she was chewing through plastic and wire cages and other homes. And so just like that I started off with a glass aquarium anyway. Even though my son is a teenager I have to admit he is mostly interested in her cuteness and not her care despite his promises to the contrary. I'm the one who cares for her like crazy and spend loads of time with her every night. I can't agree with you more that these are not starter pets for children. Since we've gotten this hamster many people have told us their stories of getting hamsters for their kids and knowing what I do now, most of them make me sad do to inferior care and early death of hamster. Of all the pets I've ever owned, aquatic snails are the easiest and would make a good starter pet for kids, but I think even a dog or a cat is a better pet for a child than a hamster. It is much harder to ignore a dog or cat, pets you can leave in cages are all too easily forgotten and neglected.

I love the way you explain that hamsters are not the best pet for most children, as most people are just like ''NO HAMSTERS FOR KIDS!'' but I am a child/young teen and i had a winter white hamster (He since passed, i'm waiting to get an other hamster from an ethical breeder). I started with not the best care (I have seen way worse but my care was bad) but did my reserch to then upgrade him to a 645sq inch cage filled with enrichement. (He never showed signs of bordom) I agree that most children will not care for them right, but i love the way you kind of say some children give hamsters great care, but most of the time, hamsters are not well suited pet for children.

He looks similar to my new hamster. I took in a hamster a few days ago from a family who did a similar situation as Chadwick (teaching a child responsibility). The parent refused to even pick up or look after the hamster. I saw his ad on a local selling group. So I asked and took him in. You and your channel convinced me not to go to my pet shop and to look for a hamster in need rather then promote rodent mills. Your message has passed the Atlantic to England to make better choices.

I said it once and I'll say it again. If you cant take care of a hamster you cant take care of any other animals especially a cat which need a lot more care and attention because of how social they are. Another reason why I hate pet stores. At least with breeders they can control who gets the animals I hope someone gets that cat away from them because they dont have the maturity to take care of animals . I'm just so sick of this already. Laws need to change.

Exactly and if you have an animal like gerbil and they have an accidental litter it is you as the owners job to ensure the babies are cared for loved and have homes for life. As an owner who had around 14 gerbils not by choice but due to circumstances. Keeping all 14 was not easy but we decided as a family that we had an obligation to care for our adult gerbils and their offspring till the end of their days and we did. Pets are for life you don'r just throw away a pet just because your kid loses interest. Oddly enough I never lost interest in Sunflower and Rocky they weren't toys they were affectionate bundles of fluff amd I loved them and the other 12 gerbils I had growing up. Sunflower did like biting my fingers a lot. She was not the most tolerant of handling.

@@Dr.RatioSnail My parents wouldn't allow me to get pets unless I proved I could handle it and no matter how hard it got they were with me to the very end. I've had hamsters,dogs,cats,snakes,turtles, and birds. All stayed with me till the day they died. The only time I would ever give up my pet is if I become homeless and then I will give them to someone I trust for a short amount of time and then get them right back when I fix the issue. Ya just don't throw away living creatures!

I am an 11 year old hamster owner, my hamster is a Robo and I think it will never be tame, idc about it because if he’s very scared of me I’m I’ll deal with it. He’s in a 1479 sq inches of floor space! He’s name is peanut and he’s 7-8 months old! My mom said if my grades are good we can get a bird/birds! But even if I got a bird, I would still respect and love my hamster❤️✨🐹

Peanut sounds like he’s having a great life and I love the size of the cage. I have two budgies they are amazing and incredibly intelligent and take up most of my time (like all of my pets do)! But they have a whole room to fly around in all day (with stands and landing areas). So if you get a bird/birds please do loads of research. Xx

Depending on the breed birds are VERY high maintenance. More so than a cat or dog, please make sure that if you get a bird that your parents are willing to take over when/if you go to college to as they often have long lifespans

None the less I’m happy that I saved my ham. He didn’t even have a wheel at the pet store. He was all alone! I went to several petstores and called no one has hamsters. Most likely form the virus not sure. Either way he’s in a better place now. 💕🐹😊 I love your videos. Hope in the future I can legit rescue one.

I’m so glad you are trying to hard with your hamster unfortunately those 3 floor enclosures aren’t big enough (I had the same one at your age) in the uk we have bigger requirements as well if there’s any chance you can convince your parents you need an 80*50cm cage minimum The Alaska from zoo plus is around £30 and that’s the smallest suitable cage you can get I have the the savic plaza but that’s a pretty expensive cage might be harder to convince your parents

I hate when people decide to get rid of an animal because "they got another animal." The only situation in which you should rehome an animal due to another animal is if one animal is causing an unsafe environment for the other animal. I decided not to foster cats yet because i got a hamster and his safety is my priority. But i also have a snake and his safety and happiness is just as much a priority as my hanster. I got the snake in May and i still have him. I am going to keep them both and not just give up my snake because i now have a hamster. That's not how you treat an animal. I love them both equally. Also, it's sad that the hammy is 4 months old. For one thing it probably means they've only had him for 2 or 3 months but also, hamsters live only 1 1/2-2 years, so that 3 months could very well be 20% of the hamster's life and could feel like way longer to him than to the humans. Poor hamster.

We've had a few surrenders say they watch the channel and follow the rescue and that's why they're contacting us to surrender at the time. It's only happened a couple of times. All of the rescues we've done before on CL or Offerup are from people who don't own hamsters/gerbils/mice anymore and are getting rid of them, so you won't see them browsing KZbin unless they're still into those animals. We've only ever had one person in the 2 1/2 years of CL rescued find us before and tried to play the victim over a very neglectful situation that we saw, rescued and had to pay for the end result of their neglect. That was the only time.
