Thank you for posting video with a cumbus with nylon strings. I have been wondering for a long time how this would sound with nylon strings and now I got my answer. Despite other people's comments I don't think it sounds bad at all, although obviously it would work better for certain types of music than others. Your videos are all very informative, thanks for taking time to make them.

Greetings Naveed, I am a subscriber to your e-newsletter as well and was looking for information on fretless mandolin when I found this video. Fantastic! I've played mando for years, and have been wondering if I could do something like this to play some more accurate maqam music. I also play Turkish saz, and a little Persian Tar. The main thing holding me back on doing this to a nice mandolin has been strings and tuning, I thought you said in the video you used D'addario oud strings? If so, which ones, and critically what is your suggested tuning? Thanks so much... Regards.

I'm a cumbus addict lol although I'm keeping my hand made egyptian oud for life, thank goodness it has a hardshell case because my first oud I slipped and fell down my teacher's steps and landed right on top of my wooden oud and it exploded into bits. The cumbus is like a tactical oud even if it breaks all the parts are easy to replace but also easy to modify, my next step for my cumbus is to install a hot rails single coil humbucker pickup so I can make it sound more like Megadeath.

Thanks for the informations . And do you know if there is many types of qanun like many sizes or the numbers of the strings ot the notes ? And the syrian oud that you played has 12 strings right ? Could another oud's have less or more strings or is it always 12 strings ?

This is just amazing! I love what you did to the mandolin and how it sounds with the nylon oud strings. I do have a question thou, as a guitarist with zero experience in any kind of fretless instruments... Does the fret marks help find the semitones? or does the position change once you remove the frets? Thanks in advance!
@OudforGuitarists3 жыл бұрын
It could help a little, but it's only a guide. They change a little bit because there's no equal temperament.

Which of these does Simon Shaheen play? His oud sounds beautifully haunting.
@OudforGuitarists5 жыл бұрын
He would play a Syrian Oud with rosettes. He wouldn't play an Iraqi oud with high f string. His ouds are usually antiques which have been refurbished to perfection by his brother Najib Shaheen.

I have an Abadin Cumbus very similar to yours, but with the standard metal strings, can you recommend a tuning for it? A little weary to try the oud tuning you used in case it's a different of string gauge and breaking strings
@OudforGuitarists4 жыл бұрын
Any Oud tuning is going to be lower in pitch on the cumbus to my knowledge... But I don't really know exactly what traditional cumbus tuning is... But I used original metal strings previously and tuned to CFADgc. The highest course being C4.

Why does the area with the tuning pegs bend away from the fingered area? What advantage do fretless necks offer?
@OudforGuitarists5 жыл бұрын
Are you talking about the oud peg box? This probably originated with ancient luthier techniques. But if you play an oud with a headstocks like a guitar and a normal one you will feel a difference in tension in the strings. For ouds it's important that the tension is correct. I personally don't like ouds with headstocks in line with the fingerboard. The advantage of fretless is you can play any pitch, you are not bound by equal temperament. Our ears like to hear perfectly harmonious pitches and this is achievable on fretless instruments. Also fretless instruments resonate better because of the intonation. The drawback of fretless is that playing chords is limited. Chords are not important in modal music. The focus is the melody.
@NeptuneatDawn4 жыл бұрын
I would think metal strings would have more sustain as they are harder. Have you tried the fretless mandolin with metal strings? I am looking to get a fretless mandolin over a fretless ukulele because I thought the mandolin having metal strings would be louder. This isn't the case?
@OudforGuitarists4 жыл бұрын
I didn't like how my mandolin responded with metal strings. The scale is too short I think, the finger mutes the metal string. It was harder to play with metal strings.

Hélio Pype Gomes Martins I have no idea where the idea for floating bridge oud came from except who first built one. It was Mohamad Fadhel from Iraq. You do hear a difference. A lot of traditionalists don't like floating bridge Ouds, and I don't know why. I really like it. I think it just changes the sound. If you want to hear the difference. Listen to Nasser Shamma solo Oud for a while, then listen to Simon Shaheen Oud. You will hear the difference after a while. I think it makes the Oud sound a bit airier.

Majnuun Music & Dance I just have a question, I was thinking of buying an oud but I have no idea what the differences between, say, the syrian and the egyptian oud is or the turkish one for that matter. Any suggestions/comments about the many variations?
@OudforGuitarists9 жыл бұрын
For a fretless guitar you should use Arabic high ff tuning. Which is: F A D G C F. It's really easy, get your low string tuned to F, then it's 4 5 5 5 5 5. Press the 4th fret for tuning A, 5th fret on A string to tune D, etc. Let me know how it works out.
@suznak1776 жыл бұрын
Majnuun Music & Dance the idea is Fadel's idea to prevent cracking while playing in high tuning, it gives a stronger oud structurally

Do you know of any luthiers that make fretless mandolins with oud strings? I am a violinist that plays Greek and Turkish music. I am also a mandolin player but I want to play quarter tones on my mandolin and not be obstructed by the frets.
@OudforGuitarists Жыл бұрын
I don't know any. After doing it myself I would recommend that you do it with a longer scale mandolin like an octave mandolin. I think that would work better. I think any luthier might be open to making such an instrument.

If so, can I replace the Turkish strings with Arabic Strings to achieve Arabic Oud sound? Or I am talking nonsense here? Please forgive my ignorance. Thanks for all you do.

You can use a higher tension string set and tune to Arabic tuning with a Turkish Oud. Kurschner Arabic oud strings are good for that. Or you can get a higher tension Turkish string set and tune down to Arabic tuning. The Oud will have a Turkish accent, but it should work well enough.
