so to solve buzzing make sure oud strings are in tune together and in perfect pitch. Next check the oud bridge and ensure there arent too many loops on the string. too much tension creates buzzing

As for Taqasim and maqam structure for beginner listeners, I think George Abyad is a good option. Also, Riyad as-Sunbati of course.

Ideally, you should make sure you have thicker strings when tuning a Turkish oud to C-C. But for a learner it's not a big deal.

This is nice, and it's wonderful that we have surviving medieval maqam music. However, the tempo here seems too slow. Also, Al-Farabi's ethnicity is contested, and I say this as an Egyptian-he is often described as both Iranian and Turk.
@OudforGuitarists6 күн бұрын
I recorded it in a different fashion here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jojJfaFsi6hsi7M Yes, the tempo is up for interpretation. I experimented in different ways and tempos and the phrases didn't work to my modern ears. But it's quite possible it was faster. Yes, nobody knows for sure whether he was Turk or Iranian. It's also highly unlikely this was composed by him.

I just got back into oud after about 15 yrs and am finding that the "standard" seems to be changing, as many string makers are now using lower tension 5th courses, which feel and sound best tuned to G not F. I don't mind much either way, as that is just transposed Iraqin tuning, which I'm used to, but it's something to be aware of. Cheers

It's not necessarily advantageous, however it could assist in learning the oud in the same way that learning multiple languages over time simply makes you better at learning languages. You start to see similar patterns and similar words especially languages that are related to each other. It is the same with musical instruments.

My pegs unwind while im tuning. I press the peg in hard but its a struggle.. its like when im tightning the string the peg cant bear the weight and it unwinds.. even if i get it to lock in.. when doing the next peg the first one unwinds again.. can you please help. Im a beginner, i undid and redid the strings on my own, not sure if its the way did them or something else
@OudforGuitarists3 күн бұрын
Are you pushing the peg in while tightening the string? Or are you pushing the peg in after tightening the string? You need to push the peg in while tightening the string. This is important. It is always possible that the peg is simply not fitted to the hole well-enough. This can only be fixed by going to a Violin repair and having them replace the peg.

I’m from 🇺🇸 and was wondering which strings you would recommend? I’ve heard mixed views on D’Addario though they’re my go-to for classical and electric guitar. I ordered La Bella’s but they rust pretty quickly.
@OudforGuitarists9 күн бұрын
I usually recommend daddario E95A set for Arabic tuning. I like this set because it's inexpensive and settles fairly quickly. Strings will rust depending on many factors so I can't definitively if one rusts less from my experience.
@OudforGuitarists9 күн бұрын
But in general I do a lot of custom sets with la bella lute strings, aquila lute strings, etc. I don't recommend this to most people. Ultimately, I always say to experiment and find out what strings work best on the oud.

@@OudforGuitarists I have a Turkish oud but prefer this tuning. Thicker strings on the bass side is my preference for any stringed instrument. Thanks for responding!
@atharbarghouthi96499 күн бұрын
The Arabic one sounds horrible (in comparison with any Oud in general) while the Turkish one seems to be a Sultan? You can't compare these two and generalize; If anyone were to check out a Sabsaby oud (Syrian) they would fall in love with "Arabic" ouds, or if they hear a Yildirim oud, they'd fall in love with Turkish ones. It all depends on the million little details put into crafting a Oud, mainly the type and age of wood. I don't agree with the method of comparison in this video, and I also think playing a full chord instead of the one note in the introduction to the song (Alf Leila w Leila) added too much noise and ruined the song
@OudforGuitarists9 күн бұрын
The sound of Oud is such a funny thing. I've received a lot of compliments on this antique Syrian Oud from respectable people, and I've heard respectable people bash Yildirim Oud sound too. I'm not making any claims other than choosing two ouds and playing them side by side. The facts are facts, one is Arabic, one is Turkish. Made by Arab industry and Turkish industry. Let's collaborate. I'd love to see more comparison videos like this, especially from a different perspective. Make your own video comparing Arabic and Turkish Ouds, I'll make a follow up video to this one and link to your video so people can see your version.

There are different ouds around the world with different lengths and play styles that require different tunings, so claiming one tuning is best is a bit far fetched.
@beauselavka80829 күн бұрын
That’s true but I think from the perspective of guitarists like myself that are learning the oud, this tuning makes perfect sense and is easy from a positional viewpoint and recognizing intervals. Thanks Navid!

Interesting that the farther West you go, the closer the E-1/4-flat gets to F, causing it to sound more like the E in a Western d-minor scale.

Also, the more East you go, the quarter tones disappear like in Balochi & Afghani and Uyghur maqam music.

Brother... 8 years I've owned an Oud and since that day I've been subscribed to you... In those 8 years, the tone, warmth and instruments you play are ... bah ba ba ba bah Damatagan! If you know what I mean!!! Let's set the context shall we! So, I was in Dubai, see kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpCaqKp_fZKDb8U I met a group of Iranian musicians in a music shop, had a wonderful evening and bought a cheap Oud off them as a souvenir. l play guitar, took it back to the hotel, couldn't get it to play well at all and then stumbled on my first major hurdle, tuning the thing with pegs... But I was determined, the Oud strikes deep into my heritage, Armenian via Egypt, now Aussie. Driving around I saw a very nice modern showroom, with the most gorgeous Ouds hanging, ornate ones, simple ones, the ebony, I haven't ever owned... I walked in and was met by Maurice, a charming Egyptian and I felt the calling. I sat down and they handed me an Egyptian Oud, I fretted and struck a pair of strings and the tone was up there with many of my loved guitars, it didn't take me long to know I'd never get another chance to own a decent Oud, not in Australia anyway. Never seen one hanging on a wall. So I bought it, lost the tune, struggled with the pegs from day one! Hey, I have lovely machine heads on my classical and steels, I learned to tune a guitar quickly many years ago and here I was feeling like a newbie again. So I packed it and brought it home. I tried playing it back in Australia, not sure if it is the weather being really humid, or whether the pegs needs a ream and service, all I knew was I wasn't going to mess around with an instrument that recoils it strings the moment a peg pops out of it's seat, so back in it's case and some thinking to do.... Months passed, I decided to check on it, took it out of the case and found the bridge had let go, 3/4 snapped in half and torn off the sound board and who's gonna fix this..??? Me I guess.... So I did, I measured up the string lengths, made myself guitar like bridge plate out of aged super hard Red Gum, put the same redgum as strengthening ears top the headstock and mounted twelve long electric machine heads. I had to buy long "deep Throat" G clamps too, just for the job. Life had me tending to other matters and the project slowly crept forward to yesterday, when I'd remembered I had sliced several random red gum pieces of differing thin widths, one of them would surely fit the bridge slot I'd routed and it did. After 8 years the day had finally arrived to test my changes, I hunted for a .79 and .1 string that was missing, dialed in a good (higher) action no buzz, jumped on to your Arabic FaFa tuning and finally got it tuned. It sounded lovely, pain in the (_!_) to tune, it was stretching in and getting closer and closer to what I wanted... Even my wife said, it's sounding better than I've heard it, only because it's tuned..... BUT THEN, AFTER 8 YEARS! I realised, this is the most difficult instrument in the world to learn how to play. I have to compare it to a guitar and I have to TELL YOU TOO, why!! Do you realise so few will be able to take a traditional Oud and learn on it. HOW CAN YOU SEE THE NECK? Or, you have to sit in a position that's going to ruining your posture for all of time. One has to be a master at the tuning and play blind before one can truly enjoy the instrument. I admire everything you've done for the Oud and the community behind them, consider what percentage of stringed players will be ABLE to even get it tuned, or get their hands on a decent Oud. My original one I put in my friendly tobacconist's shop, I traded him for a beautiful Cashmere scarf instead. My Maurice Oud will now proudly be on display with all my other guitars, I can pick it up and play whenever I choose, but I doubt I'll ever get the return of pleasure my Western guitars have given me and allowed my to learn and express my music. So when you next think of teaching someone how to play an Oud, you'll have to ask them if they've mastered a Violin and a Classical guitar and learned music notation in all Modes, Scales, including half notes, then you're pretty much reducing your audience to Brandon Acker and a few other masters of music. I love your passion, love your beautiful instruments, but if you're going to want the world to learn, you better start using a modern silent Oud with pickups and accurate tuning heads.... Why, because it wasn't until yesterday I realised, my stomach is WAY TOO BIG FOR AN OUD... You hearing me?! It really is too difficult for most considering how many give up on a guitar alone. Festive greetings for the new Year from donwunder. Hope I didnt offend.
