Hi. I've been lurking around your playlist but never said something, guess I'll do it here. I wanna say that this is such a great playlist!! It's been very helpful, the content is dense, and most importantly, how you deliver the topic. This is truly a precious playlist for a beginner like me. Thank you so much!

Thanks for the tips on the BSD man pages, these are now my go to for more common commands

Great video, thanks for the info. Totally agree with you about the Linux man pages, it should be more straightforward and concise with examples at the bottom. Sometimes the explanations for certain options of the commands can get pretty confusing and at times vague!

Yeah, the BSDs are great for this -- OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and NetBSD have incredibly helpful documentation and communities.

Great stuff! I never knew about the different sections of the man pages. I always wondered what the number was at the heading of the man page.

Luke Vonderharr Yeah, this is one of those things I was able to ignore for ages until I learned about it. Suddenly this random techy-looking number I had been looking at for 10 months actually made sense :-D.

Great video man, thank you very much. the only bsd man pages I've seen are osx's but I share your frustration with linux's man pages.

1214interwebs Yeah the quality of manpages on the BSDs is usually way, way better and more beginner-friendly than the ones you find on Linux. There's a lot of interesting little tidbits like that which have been slowly making me think that the BSDs might actually be a better place to start than Linux, even if you plan on working primarily with Linux. Heresy, I know :-D

I'd like also to add `tldr`. It's a tool you can use to get quick examples of commands usages. Say I don't know how to use zip: $ tldr zip zip Package and compress (archive) files into zip file. - Package and compress a directory and its contents, [r]ecursively: zip -r compressed.zip /path/to/dir - E[x]clude unwanted files from being added to the compressed archive: zip -r compressed.zip path/to/dir -x path/to/exclude - Archive a directory and its contents with the highest level [9] of compression: zip -r -9 compressed.zip /path/to/dir - Package and compress multiple directories and files: zip -r compressed.zip /path/to/dir1 /path/to/dir2 /path/to/file - Create an encrypted archive (user will be prompted for a password): zip -e -r compressed.zip path/to/dir - Add files to an existing zip file: zip compressed.zip path/to/file - Delete files from an existing zip file: zip -d compressed.zip "foo/*.tmp" - Archive a directory and its contents to a multi-part [s]plit zip file (e.g. 3GB parts): zip -r -s 3g compressed.zip path/to/dir

When you said you think the man pages on Linux kinda suck, do people actively update them or is that a slow process? I totally agree with the example comment. When a man page doesn't have a examples section I tend to look up the command on Google instead to grasp it's idea quicker. Could people (or I) potentially contribute to poor man pages by suggesting an example to add to the man page or does that type of thing not happen that often.

I have never asked a question to a form, either I will read documentation to figure it out. But mostly there is already an answer out there is most of the forums.
@tutoriaLinux8 жыл бұрын
Yep. Forums are great, because unlike IRC, they tend to get indexed by search engines and help other people who have the same question as well.

the man pages are terrible for sure (if you are at all new). They are definitely meant to be a reminder for someone who has already got a decent grasp of it already.
