LL Cool J was super popular but even when he was the hottest new guy in rap he was touring nationally with the beastie boys. He wasn’t an international superstar. Meanwhile in 1963 the Beatles literally couldn’t go out in public in England or the US without being swarmed by teenagers. Rock n roll was the biggest music craze in the English speaking world. Rappers and honestly, Hip Hop in general really only got to that point in the 90s. You can guarantee that in 40 years people will be talking about Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Dr. Dre etc. in that light.

They're still talking about Jay, Snoop, Em, etc. because they're still relevant RIGHT NOW. Once they're not releasing music at all or only doing things behind the scenes, that's that. Bottom line is our culture doesn't go out of it's way to keep the kids understanding that having a sense of history can only be for the better in the long run. Hip hop fans under twenty five can't tell you about anything released before 1998 unless their parents used to bump it. A young kid trying to play rock will literally study the greats like the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Beach Boys, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, etc. before they're even thinking about going out for a record deal. Most young cats don't decide to rap nowadays and go listen to a bunch of Rakim, Kane, Kool G, Ultramag, etc. to work on their technique, delivery, flows and whatnot.
