As someone from the Deep South (Florida) all I want to say is I hate the notion that we don't value lyricism or have artists that want to be lyrical. We're trapped in these boxes by mainstream DEMANDS and INDUSTRY standards and values. We want to see more bar-heavy rappers succeed because it'll open a lane for all four region's lyricists to THRIVE.
@jman1562001
@jman1562001 Жыл бұрын
at that time the South was pumping the Crunk and Snap Era rappers so if you weren't doing that, then you weren't getting a look. It always takes an artist or collective to BLOW UP before the doors for others open. It's why in the 90s Outkast had to come all the way correct to get RESPECT. T.I. even had to really work before the doors opened for him. Wayne benefited from the Hot Boyz momentum and working with NY rappers like Dipset thru the mixtapes prior till his blowup.

@@jman1562001 Lyricism was already in the south before Outkast. Me being from Texas, Geto Boys (1989-1991), UGK (1992), Rap-A-Lot and Suavehouse Records in Houston was deep into lyricism before the DJ Screw & Screwed Up Click era (95-96). Then came 1993 when Eightball & MJG was on Suavehouse then came Outkast (1994) and Goodie Mob (1995) added the icing to the cake. I think of those artists when it comes to lyricism in the south.

I saw Tech N9ne in 2011 right after Jay Rock signed to Strange. Kendrick was Jay Rock's HYPE man. I copped Section.80 and knew K.Dot had potential to be great. Not many people remember/know that the label was pushing Jay Rock first and Kendrick was on the back burner.

And whether or not Mase was active in Fiveo's ascent, the contract entitles him to a percentage of his earnings, for as long as the contract states, in exchange for whatever amount of money was given initially. Maybe if Mase understood that, he wouldn't do goofy shit like jumping back and forth between being a pastor and a gangsta rapper for the money, and he might not be so vile towards Puff as if every white executive wouldn't have given him the same agreement or worse, and without being an artist brand like Puff to enhance his career on the way up. Jimmy Iovine couldn't jump in your video or rap your lyrics and speed up your career. Clive Davis couldn't do that. And what has Mase done since then that anyone cared about? Left Bad Boy in 99 ... I'll give you Breathe Stretch Shake and to a lesser degree Welcome Back, but who's listening to those today? or anything else since then? When he goes on tour with Jadakiss & Cam, you think you're gonna hear much post-Bad Boy material? and Jadakiss still works with Puff to this day. He knows what it is. He understands what it takes to do things independently and prefers to take an advance any day.

I’ve been saying that for a while. Im from Texas so I understand. They need to get more southern artists on there. They just had a few guys from Atlanta but they need to go get more from the Gulf Coast region. No disrespect with Atlanta rappers but I feel like they also have them on there because Atlanta is popular. Heneken on there always talk about Atlanta or Miami like that’s the whole south. I feel like it’s taboo. Naw they need to get Boosie, Scarface, Bun B, Devin The Dude, D.O.C., Slim Thug, Paul Wall or Lil Keke. They had DJs on the show so they gotta get legendary DJs like DJ OG Ron C and DJ Michael Watts. They need some Memphis artists on there too. Get some more West Coast artists on there. Everything can’t just be NY, Atlanta and Miami artists only. It’s like they’re staying in the eastern time zone only if you know what I mean.
