Hi Eric...I know this is an old video but I wanted to thank you and Paul for doing this series. I just completed my T5 rebuild and used your collab video as a step by step guide. I watched the series twice prior to cracking it open and then referred back to it during the process. I felt completely comfortable and prepared because of those videos. I used Paul's master rebuild kit and had to replace the 1-2 slider, second and third gear due to dull synchro teeth. I feel a great sense of accomplishment after my first transmission rebuild! Bonus...I now have a hydraulic press in my garage for future projects!

I dont know why I watch your vids... I dont work on vehicles, but you make it seem so darned easy... I used to be the girl sitting there watching my dad work on our vehicles and handing him the tools. That is where my interest started, and you seem to be a lot like him...of course that was years ago. Besides I love those toys you get to play with. Great video. Cheers.

I certainly appreciate your viewership. If I could make it work, I'd have you hand me tools through the computer screen. That would be kinda cool actually. Thanks for the comment.

+EricTheCarGuy You could conceivably cherry pick a few guests to show up and hand you tools, or maybe do a Fixing It Forward vehicle owned by a young person, and have him or her help you work on it. I'm sure the logistics of filming that are non-trivial, but I'd watch the heck out of. Regardless, I'm loving these transmission videos. Super fascinating.

Just found your channel today. I've been an industrial turbine mechanic for the last 30 + years and I am retiring next month. I still love wrenching and I enjoy your videos. Let me add, you do not have a vocabulary limited to four letter words (rare indeed on UTube) like most mechanics. After listening to that from other mechanics for last few decades, your conversation is refreshing.

Eric, like you, I never knew the secret to teflon tape but then I went to the mountains and met with this old Teflon tape master who lived alone with the secret. After twenty years of meditation he finally showed me the secret. The secret is to thread the fastener into the tape. In other words, don't roll the tape around the threaded part, thread the part in a clockwise motion as you hold the tape near it and you will see what side to hold the tape on. Just thread the fastener into the tape.

You learned well from your own video. Transmission looks / sounds awesome. To reduce the risk of metal filings, cover your bit and tap with the assembly lube you have on the bench; the filings will stick to the lube and also helps to reduce friction. Your vacuum works, but the lube trick works when you cannot access the back side of the hole or we having to repair a part in place. For the sealant, you are using far too much...replace the nozzle from another container (such as an empty gear lube bottle) with a circular end. Last, your vice looks Greta, but make yourself a set of non marring jaws using pieces of scrap l-shaped aluminum...gravity will hold them in place and you can take them off anytime you don't need them. An old timing belt also works well to make some non marring jaws.

Hey Eric! When I'm using those heli-coil's I like to put a little anaerobic thread locker to the outside of the insert to prevent them from backing out later on down the road.. Paul is right about the anaerobic flange sealants instead of RTV.. Loctite 510.. GREAT STUFF, albeit expensive.. Just my preference.. and the larger tube has a round dispenser instead of the flat ribbon type.. just FYI.. I really like your videos, keep em coming!

Eric, it's my understanding that the shift stoppers are not suppose to touch the shift lever during normal operation. They are to be set just a bit out from the lever as to be a power shift excessive pull or push fail safe not an actual contact point for the shifter to hammer against on a daily basis.

When you apply Teflon tape hold the roll in your right hand with the taped feeding off the bottom of the roll. This keeps it short and manageable. Teflon tape was designed to seal pipe thread and it will seal (somewhat) bolt or straight thread if you use enough and there isn't any pressure behind it.
@ericthecarguy8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info.
@89nissancrawler8 жыл бұрын
Actually, it wasn't designed to seal the threads. It was designed to lubricate the threaded joint so it could be tightened more, allowing the tapered threads to seal themselves. Now with crappy Chinese threads, people layer it on to try and make things work.
@akquicksilver8 жыл бұрын
Interesting, thanks.
@johnivkovich86555 жыл бұрын
24:30 that is an overly large portion of locktite. A dot will do the job, overloading the threads can hydraulically expand the case causing those thread problems you earlier corrected. Nice video.

like I told you in the other vid, helis are not the better way, anyhow you can upgrade this tecnique cleaning the threaded hole with brakecleaner and pour a drop of heavy loctite to ensure it.
