AESA radar,BVR missiles,Helmet mounted cueing system and aerial refueling probes will be the game changer for the FA-50. It will be comparable to the JF-17,Tejas and even the Gripen and the F-16. This will be a very good option for low budget air forces and may even be an option as force multipliers for some mid budget air forces.

The big problem I see is that when you start adding up REALLY expensive equipments to a budget aircraft it loses most of it's appeal compared to more expensive and effective planes. If you start pimping up a pick up (T50/Tejas,) to the extreme and check the bill, you start looking at more capable trucks (F-16/Gripen) with other eyes interst

@@Leptospirosi Yes, you're correct. But with Russian war on Ukraine, many developing countries are looking into FA-50 due to it's cost effectiveness. Many countries don't need AESA radar that can see 150km range when they don't have money for buying long range missiles. And FA-50 isn't made for long range mission, it's made for scramble role and short bombing mission after more suitable fighters taken care of aerial operations. Small countries doesn't need long range fighters as they have smaller defense budget, and this is when cheap light combat aircraft comes into advantage. Even for Korea, FA-50 is replacing their aged F-5 fleet, F-5E of Korea was used mainly for scramble and aerial patrol role as it's very cheap to fly and maintain. FA-50 Block 10 has targeting pod integrated, so SoKor will not upgrade their current 60 FA50 with Block 20 (AESA radar, refuel pod, advanced avionics and mid-range missile integration etc..), all Korea will upgrade is to Block 10 level as they have F-16, F-15 and F-35. F-16 and F-15 fleet is being upgrade to AESA radar, so technically Korea don't need FA-50 with AESA radar just targeting pod will be enough.

not comparable, because it will always be a light combat (it will still have the weight and range restrictions). however, it might just be the best solution for a modern substitute for the TONS of F-5 out there. especially if they, along with enhancements from the block 20, also nudge in a few ideas from their competitors like the m346 (less radar cross-section on a kit, more options for anti-ship). plus, having more weapons integrations outside of using only pretty much american weapons would help it, because the bureaucracy of buying american weaponry (missiles, bombs etc) is quite big. integrating with european and israeli weaponry also might help

The best light fighter/trainer so far when it comes to specifications, cost effective in acquisition, operation, and maintenance. Performance wise it was the closest you can get to the F-16 mission envelope which can perform both air to air and air to ground/surface (navy) missions with confidence. It even have a 20mm auto cannon which comes handy in close air combat and strafing ground targets in close air support missions whenever possible depending on the risk.

I think you're describing FA50. Because to me FA50 is the closest trainer to F16. FA50 is not only a trainer aircraft but also a light MRF.

"Performance comes close to F16" ???? F16 payload 16,700lb alone compared to FA50 payload 5,000lb. Range and top speed not even close. The KAI F50 is a light trainer not a combat aircraft. Smaller airforces may use it for COIN attacks as they lack the resources to buy fighter bombers.

FA50PH's air-to-ground capability was really tested in the 2017 siege of Marawi, which pounded the ISIS-inspired terrorists. However, the friendly fire in the Marawi siege wasn't caused by the FA50PH.

KAI wanted to use more advanced AESA radar, EL/M-2052 from Israeli Elta. But it was refused by Lockheed Martin, technology partner, to protect their F-16 sales. So it had to use less capable EL/M-2032 radar. Indigenous development AESA radar is well under way. Integration of medium range air-to-air missile like AIM-120 AMRAAM is under consideration, but Korean Airforce is not interested in the air combat role of FA-50, to protect on-going development of new KF-21 fighter.
