Partly wrong there Robert, the Iraqi T-72s were Import T-72M1 armed with the Russian 125mm smooth bore. Then the Iraqi T-72s were later upgraded with extra armor and electronic systems including basic VNS for combat in low light environments. The Iraqis were using full service rounds, not training rounds and were not a weak or stupid people and had been fighting for a very long time before we came over. The M1 showed a huge leap in armor and design over anything that had came before it and the M1A1 only stood to greatly increase that. The Base M1 using the 105mm had the same armor as the Chally 1 at a thickness of 2 feet on the lower front plate and nearly 3 feet thick on the turret front. Combined with newer ammo such as the M833 and M900 APFSDS it was more then capable of fighting and defeating any soviet tanks it would have seen during it's short service. Combine our armor with the shortened penetrators due to the auto loading system and the T-64B would have a hard time cracking the M1 in a defensive position. The M1 was designed to fight a defensive war against overwhelming numbers and was designed to beat the T-64 and T-72.

The abrams gen one had a 105 Im not perfect knowledge on the challanger or the challenger 2 But the l23 round is the same round from the chieftain so it should be just fine. If your looking for the high pen of the abrams m1a1 use the leo 2 It has the high pen high velocity 120mm which would be later put on the abrams m1a1 The current m1a2 has a Huge armor upgrade compared to the gen 1 abrams, also had increased navigation system satillite gps and better infared optics it was the a1 that went against the export models of the t72. The russian export t72 was stripped down to bare min so they couldnt be used against russian t80s

Plus a lot of arcadish games already have significant realism (compared to the level of WT) except for the health bars (though, field autorepairs and spall/temperature crew survival is still arcadish in WT). I still can't get how a projectile can break into a wheel at 45 degrees and go through the side armor in 20 fragments, and have enough velocity to ammo rack and kill the entire crew in the same time.

I think people are confusing the M1 Abrams with the M1A1. The M1 was only produced for a few years before production began on the M1A1. The iconic, legendary abrams that people picture in thier mind is the M1A1 not the M1. The M1 was not up to snuff by the mid 80s hence why it was replaced by the M1A1

Not sure about the shell, but hull is only a placeholder. The armor on the hull should only be 400mm against KE, same as T-64A. Somebody even posted an article on the forums, which said that the current hull at T-64B was fitted to latter modifications of the B-version, e.g. T-64BV.

Phly, the t-64B you killed in the Abrams video was killed by a shot in the upper middle of the front plate, and if you look behind the first plate, the rest is U-shaped to make space for the optics. That could be another weak spot.

For everybody wondering the T64B has 480 mm of armor everywhere except for top dead center of the upper plate right in front of the driver when the tank comes out look at it in X-ray view and chevral armor in ceramic plates are missing just in front of the driver if you shoot the T60 fours upper plate with a tiger twos gun right where the driver would be where those horrizon a little slats are you will go through every time

If you look at the armor in the xray view you can clearly see that the armor in front of the driver is thinner than on the sides where it covers the fuel tanks. This means that there is no texolite nor the last rolled homogeneous armor. This means that the armor is 135mm (outside armor) + 60mm (Rolled inside) = 195mm total armor which is hard to pen at the angle it's at.

For people who are butthurt over the bias: This is a dev server. Changes are bound to be made. The very reason they have testers is to TEST the game, and report any balancing issues. My guess is that they thought the weak points in the armour would cancel out the amazing gun on the T-64B, but they were proved wrong - a fact that will no doubt lead to balancing changes.

thesucker555 wt dude, I got over 1500H in the game and I have tried almost every tank in the game. The Russian are the best. I don’t complain about anything. I’m just stating the obvious. And German faction players are probably the smartest. That’s at least my experience. German tankers face post war tanks with stab and sabot. German tankers also got the 105cm Tiger over 7.0 in BR. With that kind of ammo you hardly do anything to these “modern” tanks. And yes I’m saying that German tankers gets a tank that didn’t go into mass production and use while the other nations gets mass produced tanks. I’m really looking forward to the Leo 2K after reading about it. But my point still stands. It’s the same win jets, German have ww2 jets vs post war jets. German gets jets at 6.7 while ruski gets jets at 6.3 strange. I’m pretty sure Germans made the jet planes and the other stole the technology. Jajajajajajajaja. Or just hahahahaha in normal language. you call it bias but the T64 was a cut above nato tanks in the 70-80's, we wouldn't have invented DU armor packages and DU kinetic penetrator if not for the T64. the M1 Abrams was not a bad tank but it wasn't a great tank, Challenger is a good tank but its slow and unwieldy, Leopard 2A was fast but lightly armored. All good tanks in their own rights but the T64 did all the categories evenly and effectively. go forward 5-10 years mid 1980's 1990's and NATO has fixed its weakness es M1A1-2,Leopard 2A1-6, Challenger 2.

lmfao no it wasn't. The T-64 was utter shit in the 70s and 80s. You are thinking of the T-72, which WAS a major issue for American armor up until the M1 Abrams' M833 APDSFS shell & M900 DU shell. The M833, which was the combat round actually used by the base M1 Abrams before being replaced by the M900 DU (the M744 was never used outside of training), had a Kinetic Energy penetration value of about 490mm. The M900 had a KE of over 600. Get your facts right, armchair general.

Keep in mind the front plate has a hole in the armor in the middel where the driver sits thus it only has around 300-330 armor there it's around the drivers head and makes up what 1/5th of the plate space

The problem will be till people learn the strenghts of the new gen tanks. Abrams and leo 2 are great for shooting while on the move If your in a leo 2 and you stop moving you are going to die. Russian tanks were actually built this way. They are built slow and up armored to move as a wall. And real russian tanks were far superior to their export models which had meny composite armors removed, meny did not have night vision sights or infared. It was so that if russia ever had to fight them, their tanks were superior. Abrams is a great unilateral platform, it can snipe, drive and shoot. Would never be truelly deadly till it got the upgrade to the m1a1 where it recieved the german 120mm The m1a2 will get the up armor package, which gives it explosive reactive armor on all sides along with composite internal armor. Everyone expect this current abrams to be the one from desert storm and its not the same abrams. If your looking for the heavy pin run the gernman leo 2 Sniper/speed demon glass cannon. That is germam tank design still today. The leos armor compared to all modern tanks is vastly weaker, but they are the fastest tanks in the world currently. The challanger 2 would replace the challanger 1 and become one of the most durable MBT. Just be happy they didnt put in the T80u which entered service in 1976 which makes the t64b look like a joke. So for those screaming russian bias, they put the weaker of the MBTs of the 80s in.

robert goodman I still dont think itll make good gameplay with the meta. The t64s not as fast - but its Far from slow. The current meta of hellcats being good vs tigers only works because the hellcats Way faster, and it can kill it more easily than an Abrams can a T64.

Angel Corral if you want speed in pin go leo route. The abrams is good all around challangers have generally always had better armor compared to other nato tanks. Russian tanks have always been built to for the mass assault doctrine, until modern day. When i say mass assault the tanks acted asn an armor wall while infantry blitzed with BTRs and BMPs

robert goodman I can get that. But in game what we have is an Abrams with lesser armour and an ineffective, or extremly less effective gun. To a T64 with great armour and survivability with the best apfsds shot in the game. With apfsds literally being the best round type in game. So its not really Just some wall. Plus the challenger clearly doesnt have good enough armour. Also Id hope the Leos just that much faster Id say it could maybe be okay if so. Hopefully, least the heat looks promising.

The M774 shot already is a DU round, but it should be the most standardized shot that M1 should carry. The M833 APFSDS should be the upgraded round which carry a lot more penetration right that can pen 470-490 mm of effective armor.

closer to the t64b so guess ill definitely go for that first as I have the t64a. Still haven't unlocked the MBT yet so Ill go for the m1 later in time. Love the looks of the Challenger and would love to get it but if I remember correct I'm still up to tier 3 so I wont be getting that anytime soon. And yes I saw the video that should this thing killing them from the front but I would love to give them a try as well.

Basically they've given it the challengers armour, with the leo's speed and gun, and the Abrams reload and turret rotation. From what i've seen so far the most fun in war thunder to date would be Abrams vs Challenger, and that's not a fight that can happen in proper RB

Phy, when comparing shells with very high pen it is many times more usefull talking about the third column, of 60º. When no tank have more than 300mm of armor it is more important to chek the penetration value of angles. (i know composite armor have more than 300mm of effective armor but take the mbt70 for example, it says it have 320 but a shell of 302mm max pen can go through with ease, so it is just an estimative) Thats why T64 A stock shell is better than the other one

It's hull raw thickness non-angled was also 370mm, around the same protection as the Abrams if not slightly better. MBT 70 had REALLY weak armour, no clue what you are on about. And now, these are real life tanks which weren't prototypes which we have knowledge around. The Challenger never fired the shell which is fired from the gun it is now, that round was 20 years old from the Chieftain...... Depleted uranium much? We also know it was the most armoured tank of the 80s and 90s until probably some Abrams or Challenger 2 was introduced. In this game, it has the weakest. It was estimated to be around 1000mm. Not only that, Hesh has been nerfed too badly. The only reason a Challenger 2 or Challenger 1 has rifled guns today is because Hesh completely eradicates Russians tanks, yet this has been nerfed beyond belief. Leopard 2K is also believed to have 200mm more of pen although I don't know if this is true. Because everything seems to be nerfed for USSR's benefit. Therefore we have looked at historical data, and it is very incorrect.

All you guys say is armor this and armor that. The MBT/KPZ literally dominated the battlefield up until now. Just because the KPZ/MBT didn't need armor to dominate doesn't make it any less OP. The T-64 doesn't have the speed advantage or the depression. It's reload isn't the strongest, there's weak spots and you can flank it. Lets say it is OP, well the MBT-70 was equally as OP. It got nerfed later, the T-64 will also get nerfed eventually. It's only dev test. It's called a test for a reason. HESH doesn't eradicate tanks, it eradicated non-composite armor tanks but no modern tanks uses pure steel. There's a reason why HESH is no longer considered an effective anti-tank round. Also the only round the Challenger doesn't have is the DU round and for good reason. Also the armor package of the Abrams is around the same in game as in real life. Look up the stats of the M1 not M1A1 or M1A2. Also the M1 Abrams uses the same package as the Challenger 1. As for protection discrepancies, we can discuss that independently. The DM13 round is under-performing and I hope that would be changed.

I'm not going to deny that the first model of the Abrams was a bit weak in armor on the M1, but in the following models nothing crosses it front, more than ATGM but the current year. Then again, why the hell did they give the T64B its 475mm pen round? Why not leave it like the others at around 415mm. It's very sleezy, especially because its 475mm round costs way way less than the other tank's worse round. Besides, even with the 415mm round, the damn abrams might as well not have any armor at all, every single strong and weak point can be penetrated easily. Not even the turret has decent armor for what it faces.

When you fired on the T64B in the Abrams the T64B was not on level ground. The T64B was on a slight decline and creating a great 90 degree shot. the shot also went through at the top of the composite armor.

T90a (outdated tank) got hit from a modern Tow rocket and had no effect so the turret front needs to have a effective thickness of over 1000mm armor. T14 armata uses even more armor or the T90ms or wladimir versions have the arena active protection + top gen era bricks. DU ammo will probably pen any tank without a problem because its self sharpining but in terms of Cost/effectiveness and usability the russian tanks do the same job or even better for half the price

Upon closer inspection, you will see that the center of the upper plate does not have the full thickness of the armour in order to house the driver, making it a rather easy shot when encountering one :)
