The Compass, more specifically the second generation Compass II, is a very underrated and under appreciated rifle. I recently picked up a lightly used one in 6.5cm with a scope for very little money. It’s no beauty queen but it’s accurate and it has features that I really appreciate, especially for a budget rifle. It has a 3-position safety and a rotary magazine (which presents the cartridge for better/more reliable feeding), plus a threaded muzzle. I also appreciate the fact that T/C actually took the time to use thread locker on their scope base screws and that they’re torx head, not allen or slotted. The action screws were actually tight too. I’ve purchased Ruger Americans that had loose screws (I always take new rifles apart and rebuild using appropriate torque specs). This seems to be a problem on budget rifles, but T/C got it right from factory so this would have been one I could’ve skipped all that.

Will share a trick I saw someone else mention, and works great. Basically a 1-shot zero process. Aim @ bullseye, take the 1st shot, then line up scope to your original bullseye Point of Aim again, and without moving the gun (if possible), adjust the turrets so that the reticle is now on your 1st Point of Impact. This moves your point of aim to be exactly where your point of impact was. Your next shot should be a point of aim and point of impact on the bullseye (or at least really close). No "walking it in". Saves money on ammo, which we can all use these days.

WTW you might know this but if it is 1/4" for 1 click at 100 yards so it takes 2 clicks at 50 yards for 1/4" and 4 clicks at 25 yards for 1/4 maybe this will help you if not may help someone else. Have fun shooting, Sighting in is my favorite thing about shooting ! So 1 click at 200 yards would be 1/2" 🎯

The .06 I use is a Remington Woodsman model 740, with a Weaver 4x scope. They both date to the 1950's. I have heard most of my life that the pair are junk. The scope is prone to "fogging", and the rifle is prone to jamming. I take care of them both and they have put a couple of tons of mule deer venison in my freezer. I'm going for more on Oct. 9. I enjoy your videos and have watched you sight in several rifles. This is something I learned that has saved me a lot of ammo. If your scope is 1/4 moa you need to move scope 4 clicks per inch. But at 50 yes you will need to move 8 clicks per inch at 25 yes 16 clicked per inch. It works.

I have one that belongs to a friend of mine. It exploded *broke bolt, blew the magazine and attaching hardware out of the stock. This happened with a new Remington 22-250 round right out of the box. Rifle was sent back to T./C for warranty. They denied the claim said it was caused by defective ammo, however on examining the case it appears to have had very excessive headspace or a partial out of battery firing. If you own one of these please be careful and check out frequently. Needless to say we do not have any good things to say about T/C 's warranty or the firearm !

Remember 1/4 MOA per click is 2 clicks per half inch and 100 yards. Multiply that by 4 at 25 yards. I would multiply that by 2 again for 10 yards. That would be between 12-16 clicks to move an inch at 10 yards. I love my Spot On app and BDC that came with my Prostaff.

ay man absolutely loved this video, love seeing people sighting in and reviewing its cool to see people’s process while sighting guns in. anyways those carbon steel barrels on the compass are very thin, so you lost a lot of accuracy shooting more than 3 rounds in a 2 min time window. not all of these stray rounds are shooter error.

Good shooting WHO_TEE_WHO. You can't beat the T/C (Smith & Wesson) rifles. I recently got the new Compass II in a 308. Academy had them on sale for $229.00, Smith and Wesson had a $50 rebate, and I had a $50 Academy Gift card so my net cost was $129.00. The Compass II has the upgraded trigger which has a crisp break at about 3.5 lbs and they improved the forend on the stock to ensure the barrel remains in a free-floating position. It took 3 rounds to zero it in with Winchester hunting ammo and shot sub-MOA group without Match Grade ammo. Throw in the threaded barrel and a lifetime warranty by Smith and Wesson and a Sub-MOA Guarantee it's hard to find any rifle budget or otherwise with the value and performance of a T/C rifle. Sure there are better looking, fitting, design, and features, in much higher priced rifles but unless you are looking for a long-range precision shooting rifle most any rifle that shoots sub-moa at 100 yards is precise enough for most all ethical hunting needs. Thanks again, for the Videos Whotee. Today is "A Cold day in South Texas; A day the Good Lord hath made, Let's be glad and Rejoice in it." God Bless you and your family. .

Much easier to move the reticles to where the actual hit is. Holding the rifle in the same place it was when you shot. Use the adjustment knobs for micro adjustments.
@wigon3 жыл бұрын
That's best done with a bench rest. You can do it just with a bipod, but it's a lot harder as you have to stay very still as you move the turrets. But yeah that's how I zero my rifles as well. It saves on ammo and more importantly it keeps the barrel from heating up too much which causes the groups to shift a bit (and sometimes open up).
@andybreglia94312 жыл бұрын
Don't need a $2,000 rifle to have something good. If a budget rifle shoots good, right on. Way I did it, during end of Johnson administration, got 03-A3 barrelled action, got Fajan stock, had to replace follower, for just under $200, got something just as good as any factory rifle. Hooked on .30-06 from M1Garand in the Army. I like to do 3 shot group before doing sight adjustment. TRAIL Boss/110 grain carbine bullets, plinking and introducing shooter new to centerfire rifle (reduced recoil). 220 grain softs, any Alaska dangerous game. If it were still legal in Africa, 220 grain solids, brain shot on elephants. If Isla Sorna were real, same load on T rex. This is one versatile cartridge. Your budget rifle good for anything in North America.

Smith &Wesson is the parent company. My one advice would be to change the rings and bases. Use either the NIKON or WARNE, steel rings... I would probably change the bases while you are at it. Use the WARNE steel bases. Or another really good solid base and ring setup. Use DMZ GAME REAPER, or of course the reliable Dual Dovetail Leupold base and ring set. All of which are very soiled and will not shift, or break under recoil like what is on it now. Especially if you at some point use a heavy grain round in that caliber.

You will also find that Browning is now the parent company for Winchester and producing a beautiful product. My understanding is Nikon has gotten out of the scope business aswell. Nice rifle so would love to see the TC performance 308 precision how about it!

That's a nice gun. It depends on what kind of reticle my scope has that determines what I zero it for. If I'm sighting in a gun with a BDC reticle I zero it at 100yds, but if it is a duplex reticle I have it about 2 1/2" high at 100yds.

Compass is a good model and you cant go wrong with a 30-06 I prefer 180 grain or 165 but Remington corelokts. Cant kill a deer any less deader with corelokts at those yards and your spending about half the money.

It is hollow, and loosely filled with bits of foam. If you pack it with a dense foam, it feels good.

Don't make adjustments after every single shot. You should be able to look down the bore of the rifle and center it on the target at 25yds. Adjust your scope to match what you see in the bore before you even fire a shot. This will get you very close to zero. Fire 3 shots. Make the appropriate adjustments and move to 100yds. Fire 3 shots and make the appropriate adjustments. Fire 2-3 more to verify your zero. Make any small adjustments you may need. You're done. Shouldn't take more than 10 shots. Don't use 2 different types of ammo. Most likely your zero will not be the same for each load.

Sadly the Compass is no longer available unless it's a used gun. I wanted to get one. But missed the opportunity. So. Now I own a Savage Axis-II, in 6.5 Creedmore.

Hi! I don't want to be brutal in any ways. But there's one thing you have to know. Between changes, a scope needs one or two shots to set in . If you don't do this your settings are always be out. The mechanics needs to move to get in place. So make your ajustements. Shoot at least two rounds before confirming your changes... 🖖🏻🇫🇷😎🇫🇷😎🇫🇷🖖🏻

Don’t know if it’s much help but I’ve had both as a beater rifle. Both will do everything you want, but won’t win any awards, the compass is the better gun in my opinion. Has a lot of features that help make it very accurate. It has a true free float barrel, aluminum bedding pillars and 5r rifling which deforms the bullet less , makes for a more accurate flight and less barrel fouling. And possibly the biggest factor for my axis (I’ve had several) the scope had to be mounted high for the savage bolt handle to clear the scope where as the compass you can mount the scope as low as you choose. The only thing the axis have is a accutrigger. And you have to get a axis II to get that. Compass also has a more rigid stock. IF THEY ARE ON SALE OR REBATE. If your paying regular retail the ruger American is much better than both.
@keiththompson73924 жыл бұрын
I would recommend the Thompson. It has am MOA guarantee of 1 inch at 100 yds out of the box. The stock is very solid and best of all it has 5R rifle grooves.
